First Time Reaction | Nirvana - "The Man Who Sold The World"

Take this from someone who was actually there that night. Kurt didn't seem sad or depressed at all. In fact, through the whole night, he was laughing and telling jokes. Afterwards, when the concert was over, he stood up, walked right up to the audience, and started to sign autographs for us and even making fun of people but in a funny way. Not to insult anybody just making fun of them for humor. He really seemed to be having fun and enjoying it. I happened to get his autograph that night, which I still have to this very day. Something I would never want to sell or get rid of.

@@B.Abaracus Personally, I do not believe that kurt committed suicide despite what the media says. There is a lot of evidence that proves otherwise. For a few examples, The suicide note, a guy who claimed courtney love offered him 50 grand to kill kurt cobain and even courtney's father had said in multiple interviews that he believed his daughter had to do something with Kurt's death. Implying that she had killed kurt herself or had hired someone to kill him and even her own lawyer has came out and said that kurt wanted a divorce because he was aware of her cheating on him so that give motive for courtney wanted kurt dead. Not to mention the amount of heroin found in his blood stream. With that amount of heroin found in his blood stream there was no way that kurt was even able to move rather than pick up a shot gun and shoot himself. Then the shot gun itself. The barrel of a shot gun is way to long for kurt to be able to shoot himself with. And the suicide not itself. There have been 4 different handwriting experts that have said that someone else had written the last 4 lines or sentences in the letter not kurt. It was those last 4 lines or sentences that made it seem that the letter was a suicide note. All of these things that the Seattle police department didn't bother to investigate. They just found his body and found the so called suicide not and declared it a suicide. Not bothering to take the time to do any investigations at all.

A great adaptation of an amazing song. Of course, you can't go wrong singing a David Bowie tune anyway - the man was a genius. To think this song originally came out in 1970! So far ahead of its time. Anyway, Nirvana definitely did it justice and Kurt put a lot of emotion behind the song.

All of the MTV "Unplugged:" sets were muted lights, dark curtains, and eerily quiet. Clapton, The Black Crowes, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, soundgarden and a few more bands all signed up to do an Unplugged hour or so for MTV and most recorded it and sold is as a release. This was just before MTV got ADHD and decided to start reality TV (the real world, 94) and the music industry suffered ever since.

MTV's Unplugged series came at a very unique time. Glam rock was fading fast and listeners were looking for something more intimate and real. Grunge was a part of that same evolution. MTV was way more popular and influential than it is now. Many people thought it was too influential. There was no streaming music at the time, let alone streaming video. MTV was essentially the only international platform for music. Because of this they could draw artists to do shows like unplugged. I remember begging my parents to get cable so I could watch MTV. I don't even know what channel it is now.

There's a really chilling moment right before they start this song in the show. Kurt says, "I know I'm going to mess this up", and he does in fact mess up the lyrics. But the way he messes them up is eerie. The original lyrics in the second verse go, "And all the millions here, we must have died alone. A long, long time ago..." When Kurt sings it he says "We marked a million hills, I must have died alone. A long, long time ago..." makes you wonder if he had been contemplating suicide since then.

I grew up listening to Nirvana. Kurt Cobain is from the town I live in, so, naturally I learned to play guitar and some of the first songs I learned were Nirvana. I remember watching that episode of MTV Unplugged when it first aired. It was EPIC!! I was 14 or 15 at the time. It was what inspired me to pick up my dad's old acoustic and start strumming! Although the first song I learned was Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash, Come As You Are was my second!!

What's funny is I think the version of Aneurysm from the With The Lights Out boxset is actually the best. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's just because it has that more raw pre-Nevermind Nirvana sound to it. Hey Aileen.... I've been watching your KZbin posts for sometime now and I must say I really rather enjoy the music you select and the reactions you share with those of us watching and listening. So I couldn't help but drop you a friendly Hello 🙂 and comment. You did indeed pick a great one from Nirvana on this occasion. Actually that entire album, in which this song appears is probably one of my favorites by this group. It's just one those Albums you can just pop in and let ride from start to finish. A Grunge Era masterpiece in my opinion with all the elements you'd expect from this style , but with a more intimate feel to it. The imperfections and gritty real world feel of it make it a perfection in its own right. Kurt was great at this and arguably he nearly on his own defined an entire musical movement.... Not to down play all the other great bands of the same time and style. I also admire in your reactions how you let the music affect you. You cry when the music tells you to.... You smile, laugh, and "Rock Out' accordingly. You feel the music and its message. Rather it be through the sound or lyrics. Music is such a beautiful outlet for expression encompassing so many disciplines coming together. I guess that's why musicians and music lovers alike... are what they are. Anyways.... When I was 22 I listen to heavy metal and country and that was around the time I first heard Nirvana and it was game over I loved grunge and I love Kurt Cobain's soul and it's chilling that he chose that song with them lyrics, I must have died alone a long long time ago because a year after that he did die alone. In retrospect, the whole vibe, from the set design to the song choices were foreshadowing to some extent. Sometimes it’s hard to watch this having been there through this time. He was gone 4 months after this was recorded.

This was his last performance on TV and his second to last performance ever before his passing. I always felt this was his goodbye, without saying goodbye. You were right on when you said you could see the sadness in his eyes, he truly was a tortured soul. I lived every single person on that stage and what they brought. Pure. Raw. Vulnerable. Is the essence of Nirvana and what made this the perfect setting for them despite Kurt's fear. "I guarantee you I will screw this song up" And he did, but recovered the solo to make it sound perfectly imperfect! P.S. The rehearsals really weren't going well for this at all. This whole performance means so damn much to me. It's perfect....the song choices, the atmosphere, and, damn, his voice. Raw and beautiful. I wish he was still here. :( You should check out the whole performance if you haven't yet, but specifically Come As You Are and Something in the Way really hit me with the emotional subtlety that you talked about.
