You have to remember that in 1982 this sound was NEW. It wasn’t basic at all…. It was a new sound. The song wasn’t like anything else at the time. It wasn’t ‘basic’. To your ear it sounds so familiar ‘like he was writing a hit song’ because every Pop song you’ve grown up from your childhood was influenced by the 80’s and Prince is a pioneer of the 80’s sound and the foundation of the music you listen to today. Prince had moves. He was 24 years in 1982, when this song was recorded. He was just hitting his stride. Prince wasn’t mainstream or like anyone else at the time. He was uniquely different.
@jenniferfoster169218 күн бұрын
Yes, thank you! All of this is 100%. Nothing ever basic about Prince.

Smile. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for the correction. I simply noticed that all the hit songs that made on the charts were not the songs that were on repeat in urban cities & communities. I’ve heard several reactors mention that despite Michael Jackson & Prince’s gifts, they really do not have the vocal chops. And I believe that it is because they always react to same hit songs; songs that are usually up tempo, catchy and appeal to the masses. Ex: Little Red Corvette When Dove’s Cry Purple Rain….ect. I was not confident about the timeline that is why I also included the B-Side of a hit album. Like you said Prince cannot be box into one sound, and one would do themselves a disservice if they (only) listen to the hits. I simply wanted to suggest the songs that are also #1 in the hood because of the (SOUL). “Another Lonely Christmas” was the only holiday tune that Prince ever recorded and release on the B-side of “I Would Die 4 U”, and many of his hardcore fans don’t even know it exist. But it is traditionally played on repeat in black cities alongside Donny Hathaway ‘s This Christmas & The Temptations. I know that “If I Was Your Girlfriend” made it to (67) on the Billboard charts. But I struggled finding the other songs that I listed. You are obviously well educated on the artist, I am not. I’m just a fan of the man his music and his commitment to the community. I simply wanted to suggest songs that are (not) #1 on Billboard but are #1 in the community. Because they are (2) different sounds. And yes…that is subjective. Seriously tho, thank you for clarifying. 😊

Prince was from his own Purple planet. I know he worked endlessly perfecting all his skills but it remains a mind blowing experience when you truly see the totality of it in action. When I was 14 I saw him live in late 1988. His performance ruined me on concerts for life. He was the only artist that ever came close to the bar he set. This dude drove himself out onstage in a white convertible. During a musical breakdown he was playing basketball, hitting near 3 pointers on the stage basketball court (yes he did!) with his dancer Cat, and styling by spinning the ball on his finger. He played classical and jazz styled piano and at one point played upside down. Shredded throughout on guitar. Danced with splits, leaps, kicks, twirls and microphone stand tricks. And he jumped behind the drums, bass and led his amazing band. Sang beautifully and played hit after hit and he was only 30 and already had 20+ hits. RIP to the GOAT of my generation. I love MJ but on his best day he couldn’t carry the Purple geniuses guitar case. Prince made other greats seem like they were at high school talent show level in comparison.

You do understand that Prince was literally a genius, right? He was 19 when he got his first record contract and it was with the understanding that he would be the producer. He played 27 different instruments. He not only wrote songs for himself, but hits for other artists. And just so you know, “Little Red Corvette” had nothing to do with a car. His lyrics were fun and beautiful and deep and nasty and provocative and artistic. Prince didn’t write songs that were “intended to be commercial”, or “intended to be a hit”. He wrote from a place of artistic creativity and his songs became commercially hits. There will never be another Prince. May he rest in glorious peace and may he now thrill the Angels.

Whatever issue with whoever Prince had on his mind that night, I've read about the performance, the evening and don't care enough to look it up again; my first reaction to that version was "serve the damn song, MFer!". Of course, everyone else onstage was already deep in the flow of the night's music and the star power present, Dhani was enthralled with Prince's involvement and contribution. Nah, not a fave, though subsequent viewings have lowered the level of my disdain for his off-side take on a classic I've loved for ~40 years previously. No question Prince was a genius, but I'll never be a fan of that performance, a desecration, imo. 🤷🏽✌🏼😎🎶❤️✨️🕊

Like most (Black) pop vocalists. They have 2 careers. 1 before and after their music cross over. (Whitney, Michael, Aretha, Steve, Beyonce, Mary J, ect.) Never listen to their music after the cross over to recognize their gifts. That music, although great, it is usually designed to appeal to the masses. You must listen to the music when they played for the love of it. When they made music for themselves and not the label. (Or the B-side of a hit album) Prince: Adore Beautiful Ones If I was your girlfriend International Lover Choose any of these, then you'll (begin) to know the man. Great reaction!
