I can't express to you how exciting, cutting edge and amazing it was for those of us who grew up with his music through the years (I've been a fan since his first song, 'Soft and Wet', came out in 1978). I would encourage you to check out his earlier works before Purple Rain such as " I Wanna a be Your Lover', 'Dirty Mind', 'Controversy' , '1999' and 'Little Red Corvette'.

One of the best singers, artist, and performer of his time. Sometimes, I think, very underestimated. He was a genius in the music business and much more! Complicate, complex, work alcoholic. His genius took him away from us. A great loss. It's amazing that your reaction is similar to what all great artists can do .....they take you on a journey; It's like an out-of-body experience. What you think he's singing this live? Prince was a talented genius, but this has been auto tuned and processed,
@robinbeerman47263 ай бұрын
@@grandad.reacts I heard him live and he was even better. But back in the day. Live music was not autotuned like today's junk. There are a couple of groups and people today that have same amount of talent, james blunt, the group home free. What you don't understand is when people went to concerts until maybe mid nineties, they sounded just as good as studio version. That's what I mean by no autotune. There is no comparison to the artist in the past century to today's lack of talented artist. That people accept rap as actual music. When all it is is talking to a beat with a bunch of foul-mouthed language and scenarios. My opinion, Bern around a long GG time.

What most people miss is that the opening lyrics of "never meant to cause you trouble" was referring to his relationship with his father, "weekend lover" was referring to at the time his relationship with his girlfriend and "say you need a leader" was referring to his band planning on going their separate ways.
@MooreCEJr3 ай бұрын
“Purple Rain” was initially conceived as a country-inflected duet with Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, who turned it down, claiming Prince’s vision for the song was “too much” for her. All that’s left of its country origins is its evocative title - which Prince lifted from the song “Ventura Highway” by the folk-rock group America, of anonymous-horse riding fame (A Horse with No Name). The transition from country to atmospheric stadium rock wasn’t instigated by Prince himself, but by Wendy Melvoin, the 19-year-old guitarist in his backing band, The Revolution. During rehearsals, she hit upon the indelible opening chords, inspiring Prince to take the song in a completely different direction. After six hours of non-stop practice and experimentation, “Purple Rain” was all but written.

Do you still have time? A lifetime? There is still soooo much good music, artists, songs in many genres to discover. And the stories behind them... The world of rock, the world of "black music" - soul, funk, groove, RnB, but also the variety of county music, romantic music, love songs, protest songs and - last but not least - classical music. FanFact: This song is taken from a film about Prince - legendary. Prince, a somewhat shy man - at first, and MJ were the gods of music, both particularly talented in singing, performance, dance. Prince has fantastic songs - Diamond and Pearls, Kiss, 1999, Raspberry Barret and many, many others...

There's a very elite class of people, who knew exactly what they wanted to do as a career, at a very early age; then had the support and motivation to do it methodically. Prince was one of those people, with music. Taylor Swift is another with music. Bruce Lee is another, with martial arts. These are the lifers, who are CONSTANTLY evolving, and improving. Prince had MANY bands over his career. The Revolution was just his first. Many consider his best era to be the Revolution and the New Power Generation, which covers pretty much the 80's and 90's. He had guest vocalists on his tunes all the time too; artists on his label (I think) like The Time. He's done 3 feature length movies too, where he plays a fictitious version of himself. They're damn good too. Each one had a MAJOR soundtrack album, PACKED with bangers. This is the title track. This video is taken from the movie of the same name. In 1992, my brother-in-law was doing temporary work setting up stages, then tearing them down at various venues around Scotland. They'd usually get free tickets. One band he did, was Prince, at Parkhead Stadium in Glasgow, then home of Celtic FC. His crew were the exception, because Prince was a well known perfectionist. HIS crew took over the venue for the time Prince would be there. I knew OF him before this concert. I knew some of his tunes, but he never grabbed me. This concert BLEW my mind. This guy is a musical GENIUS. He's a master of EVERYTHING. Check out the uncensored Sexy MF. THIS was his current single at the time. The full length (7mins) uncensored music video was blasting over the big screen in the stadium as we were heading in. This was the start of the New Power Generation era. Prince set the bar VERY high. He was famous for his after-party performances, where he goes from one HUGE stadium gig, like the one I went to, straight onto a small, local club for another 45mins or so set.

Have to “fact-check” someone’s comments🙏🏽💜…I’ve followed and researched Prince since 1978. Purple Rain was inspired by his parents strained/abusive relationship and Prince’s tumultuous relationship with one of the few women Prince genuinely fell in love with - Denise Matthews, a gorgeous woman from Niagara Falls, CN who was biracial, German and Nigerian ethnicity. She was a muse and lover during the mid eighties. Prince designed an entire group around her and renamed Denise “Vanity,” with groups name “Vanity 6.” Their music can also be found on YT. The actual opening lyrics - “I never meant to cause you any sorrow, never meant to cause you any pain,” … refers to his both parents as they both were abusive to each other and Prince and Denise’s relationship which was also fraught with turmoil, distrust, confusion due to Prince’s inability to “commit” and his “harem” of women he openly flaunted and expected to cater to him and accept each other’s hierarchy within the situation. Denise of course was disappointed/distraught/disillusioned. She quit the movie and left Prince’s camp during the early casting and rehearsals. This is where her replacement, #apolloniakotero enters. The stanza: “Honey, I know, I know times are changing…It's time we all reach out for something new, that means you too…You say you want a leader, but can't seem to make up your mind, think you better close it and let me guide you to the purple rain;” - does not refer to “the group.” It refers to we as people, being confused about our faith, our religious beliefs…turning to different idols/false prophets/ to sooth our spiritual emptiness. Prince alludes to(in the lyrics;) to let one’s faith bring you back to the true creator/ GOD … at the end of the world, so that your soul can rest in heaven - the “purple rain” of “spiritual peace and tranquility.”
