I love Simple Minds, actually saw them live some weeks ago for the first time (I had to come a long way until I was lucky enough to see them) and it was fantastic. It was their 40 year anniversary tour which had been postponed for two years due to Covid and they played all their hits and more. Almost everything they did from their beginning in the 70s up until the end of the 80s was pure gold. They still made good records after that, but my heart belongs to their post-punk, new romantic and new wave stuff between 1979 and 1985. This lineup here in the video with Mel Gaynor on drums, Derek Forbes on bass, Michael MacNeil on keyboards and of course Charlie Burchill on guitars and Jim Kerr on vocals was the best one they had in my opinion.

Simple Minds have been an amazing team for longer than before I was even born. They've released many best-of compilations; the pick of which could be their 1992 CD 'Glittering Prize '81-'92'. Their 2002 album 'Cry' was a superb cocktail of traditional acoustic/electric guitars and electronics/synths. But there's so much more to them; and like Depeche's 101 tour in 1988, Simple Minds' 1986 'LIVE: In The City Of Light' recording showcased just how awesome a team they were - and still are.

Simple Minds have so many great songs that helped shape the sound of the eighties. My biggest recommendation would be New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84), such a wonderful piece that sounds like the perfect blend of Duran Duran, U2 and Sister of Mercy. Would also love to see you react to some New Beat. It was a slower electronic underground genre fusing elements of New Wave, EBM and Acid House, that took Western European clubs by storm in the late eighties but soon became so commercial it imploded, transitioning into the hard house and techno scene of the nineties. Some recommendations: Miss Nicky Trax - Acid in the House, Acts of Madmen - The Dream and Amnesia - Ibiza.

while more and more music is coming back sounding very close to the 80s - this piece of great music shows another difference from todays produced music and the 80s. A long intro, a song which is growing more and more, a kind of break after more then 3 and a half minutes and a song which is ultimately exploding once again... today every producer would cut the song after 3:15...

Didn't Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill meet at primary school? My friend was a massive fan , and took me to see them in Glasgow c1990 so for once Dereck you are reviewing a band I have seen live ! Wish you would do Stereophonics now , I saw them in Edinburgh !
