The very best of my fellow Glaswegians. I'm a drummer and always admired and immitated Gaynor. But, McNeil and Burchill were just sublime together. The chemistry of the whole band at this point was electric.

Big Shout out to Travis and Suzi!! Street Fighting Years was a great album from one of Scotland's finest live bands. Glittering Prize is my favourite of theirs and of course the one which made them superstars in the UK- Mandela day in the 1980s.

I was 18 on 16th Sept 89 and watched this concert in Birmingham UK. He blew my mind.. For me the best band ever. This was them at their brilliant best. The power as a live band were just so unique . Mid to late 80s they ruled the bloody World. 35 years on they are still touring in 2024. Get to a gig like I have this year. I can how both of you are wow by Simple Minds. Great to see. ✌️🎶♥️

I can’t tell you having been a fan for many years this tour in 1989 was the first time I saw them live at Wembley stadium, when that curtain came crashing down it was complete elation . The album Street fighting years is magic, everything you are saying is in that album. They are still rocking out saw them this year & they have a new album 😉

FYI the drummer is the legend Mel Gaynor he’s incredible but sadly after many years he left the band to pursue other interests and they now have another amazing drummer called Cherisse Osei , she is equally incredible considering the boots she had to fill. You should check her out!

Unfortunately Street Fighting Years wasn't released in the US. Don't know why? Apparently it wasn't commercial enough? Great reactions to these tracks. Great album full of anthems

Hiya Lee, it was released in the u.s under A&M but didn't sell at all. The American press hated it calling it over political and musically bloated( that was the nice reviews) which I'm inclined to think myself. I didn't like the album but loved their political stand so supported the release. A bad album at the wrong time, the world of music in Europe had changed mostly because of pure uncut E's flooding the UK and Europe. The Stone Roses etc with the emerging baggy/rave scene unfortunately made this album stale for a lot of young fans( I was 17 at time of release) as the press were saying the minds were going back to their dance type roots of I travel because of producer. Also another moan, they should never have put Mandela Day and biko on album, piss poor excuse for not having enough songs. Still got such a soft spot for them though but I honestly think they shouldn't have let Mick leave, he was the groove of the band. Respect 🙌✌️

Street fighting years is probably one of the most spellbinding bits of rock music ever, but sadly never gets any recognition. Simple minds are one of best band ever but you never hear much about them. They always let there music do the talking. As bruce says in the verona DVD they dont take the pompus side of fame to seriously but take there music deadly seriously.

After Don’t You, SM knew that stadiums beckoned. And with the album Street Fighting Years, the songs had to fill a stadium. They didn’t fail. Mind you their older material would’ve worked just as well. Ie. Waterfront, The American, Theme For Great Cities and of course the reimagining of Book Of Brilliant Things.

This song is a tribute to singer/ poet Victor Jara who in the early 1970s was arrested after playing a protest concert in Chile after Allende was overthrown in another US Coup when they put the murderous general Pinochet in charge, they broke Victor's hands put a guitar in his hands and told him to play a song...when he couldn't they shot him dead. Once again America is doing the same kind of thing but in other countries around the world.
