You should watch the Epic History four part series on Alexander the Great. Alexander was a straight beast! But I'll explain what happened, basically The war was against Persia for what they did to Greece 100 or 200 years prior. Alexander did that already. He was the king of Greece, King of Persia, and a Pharaoh of Egypt. The men wanted to go home back to their families with all the new wealth and glory they've won. Alexander wanted to continue so the soldiers were like "we want to go home" and Alexander was like "You're right, I should send the people who are hurt and old home." and they were like "No we ALL want to go home..." and Alexander was like "I don't think y'all are standing on business right now".

During the Classical period the Greeks and Macedonians claimed to value bravery and honor above other considerations. Within the military these values became almost cult-like. Having your own glorious burial and a tribute statue was a great honor, a worldly type of "immortality". Alexander continued to hold to these values through the endless pattern of military campaigns. Realistically, Alexander may have been "mentally unstable", since he never felt satisfied, moving on to conquer something new. After so many years, his soldiers were tired. And the temptation to go home while rich, and in glory, led to their revolt.

Imagine hearing something similar to this speech delivered with Alexander the Great's charisma and cult of personality. It would be difficult not to follow him to the gates of hell after hearing this.

Well they were feeling unappreciated and felt like he abandoned his Greek heritage and adopted foreign customs. Some felt he was full of himself and considered himself a god. There’s other myths about Alex in the Quran but he’s not referred to as Alexander.
