This is a cool deep cut of Alice Cooper in their proggy ambitious hat. "Be my lover" and "under my wheels" were the big radio cuts from this album. It's a good album to start looking at the discography because it came out right when he was really blowing up with the 70s kids, so you are being introduced to his sound in the same sequence as many of his fans.

Not that surprising in retrospect, a lot of his songs were morality tales, like "Dead Babies" was about parental neglect, and the shows always ended with Alice being punished. Not religious myself but Cooper seems like a solid guy, doesn't cram his beliefs down anybody's throat and does a lot of charitable work, quietly. Sucks he's getting pilloried lately for not having the correct up-to-the-minute views on gender issues, but I think he'll pull through.

On the album “Love it to Death” on the “B” side are a trio of great numbers starting with “Second Coming” then “The Ballad of Dwight Frye” and “Sun Arise”. They used to just knock us out, dancing in a dark room with a black light. You might want to give them a listen.

Alice Cooper, omg my first concert. It was promoting the album schools out, and I’m 18. I was 14 maybe. We were stoned outta our minds. Here was Alice Cooper flying over the crowd suspended by a cable, sitting on a giant toothbrush. Looking back, I wonder what my father thought as I listened to him. The 8 tracks..🤣. You know his father was a Methodist preacher.. funny

I saw Alice perform this live in a small casino venue with a few hundred people in Southern Cali. Mid nineties I think. It was so surreal because I been listening to him since I was a kid in the early seventies. It was like watching Friday the 13th on a large screen surrounded by woods back when it came out. \m/

Saw Alice 4 times in the 70's and 2 times in the 20-teens. The 70's shows were like Vegas or Broadway -- huge productions, stagecraft, multiple sets, clothing changes, boa constrictors, swords, hatchets, baby dolls, electrocutions, hangings, beheadings -- you get the picture. It was worth every penny. The more recent times he still has a bit of the stagecraft, but it's more about the music now (I believe his daughter is f the guitarist but not sure if she is still doing that). This song will forever be one of my all time favorites... but he has a huge catalog that I still can listen to today(Ballad of Dwight Fry, Hard-hearted Alice, Muscle of Love, and many more that do not get airplay.

Alice Cooper shows were beyond words in those times. I got to see the killer tour - (he had a large snake he carried around, was hanged, played to the crowd, was there for the crowd.... it was a traveling type show) - while in middle school and bought the album that weekend. My parents bought me headsets for the single fmily stereo, and my brothers and parents all thought i was going to hell. Muscle of love was the last 'original' band tour for me.... Eons later, i was married (in our 34 yr), had two sons, and took them all to see AC, and they too became fans. So funny to think back to those days and society. I got last laugh as i grew up listening to some of the best music/artists ever.

Bro Alice was straight theater with a rock in’ beat. Yes his characters would die at a minimum of once during a show and we knew that going in. That just added to the way you were drawn in to the show like a movie waiting on the pivotal scene. A true showman. Look up his education credentials brother, that man is SICK in the best way.

Major kudos and shot out to whoever requested this one. I couldn’t possibly think of a better Alice tune to get someone locked in than THIS ONE RIGHT HERE. Grew up an Alice Cooper fan in the 70’s, and Alice was one of the handful of 70’s rock bands that no one would ever give you grief over cause he had instant stirred cred.. likewise of Sabbath, the MC5, and Motörhead, among others. It’s a shame to see him sometime forgotten or overlooked when people are talking about really great original metal and hard rock bands. Alice really had kind of a crazed western outlaw kind of appeal, thanks to his smooth draw gunslinger sidekicks: the often overlooked genius of guitarists Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce. To me, they fit perfectly right there alongside greats like Mick Taylor of The Stones, Joe Perry, and early Peter Green. Great guitar work is the real backbone of the Alice Cooper sound, and this song bears that out as an epic rock composition that plays out like an Arabian Spy Opera in a Psychedelic Spaghetti Western. Anyways, when turning on to Alice at first, people often recommend “Feed My Frankenstein” for some reason. It’s a cool song, but really kind of a typical metal party tune that really misses the mark for showcasing what the band Alice Cooper was really good at: great compositions with truly clever madman lyrics. As I said, this is a great starting point.. and to follow up, I’d suggest a few key tracks like the infamous trilogy a couple of others have suggested: “Second Coming”>”The Ballad of Dwight Fry”>”Sun Arise”. It’s a 3-for-1 where each of these songs go seamlessly into the next making for one long creepy Alice EPIC about loosing your mind. It’s totally cool.. you’ll love it. Others I would suggest are: “Desperado”, “Black Juju”, “Under My Wheels”, “Generation Landslide”, and my personal favorite Alice tune: “Pain”.

The spitting in tne cup thing was an urban legend, along with a lot of other stories in the Alice Cooper legend. But Alice, the band and their management never refuted the stories because it raised their notoriety. They believed the more the parents hated them, the more popular they would be with the kids. They did however do other socially unacceptable things to enhance their infamy. Look up the chicken incident and the Piccadilly Square stunt for examples.

People freaked out about his live show. He used to chop baby dolls up with an axe when they performed the song “Dead Babies”. There was a significant fixation on death in a number of his and he dramatized death in his concerts. This all caused quite a stir. Songs that had or implied a death theme: The Ballad of Dwight Fry, Black Juju, Killer, Dead Babies, Under My Wheels, Halo of Flies, I Love the Dead, Cold Ethyl, etc.

There was a reverend (I don't remember who)that stated Dead Babies was about killing children. Parents ate that up. It is a song about child neglect because the mother wanted to go out and party. Another bad article was about Alice killing animals on stage. What happened was someone threw a live chicken on stage. Alice being a city kid thought, chickens fly and picked it up and threw it in the air thinking it would fly away. It plunged into the crowd only to be stomped on. The spit thing is false. He did have someone dressed as Santa Clause during holiday tour and beat him up on stage. Killer is my favorite album of all time and Halo of Flies my favorite AC song. It was also the first album I bought. I was 12 or 13.

They were simply a rock band who's schitick was theatricall stuff which they were the first to do that in a concert.. Yeah Ozzy got tagged with that one too, but Alice Coopers story preceded Ozzy's story by about 20 or 30 years. There is some great music in that album. (You Drive Me Nervous) stands out. With just a couple of exceptions on every song on this album, somebody dies, is dead or get's killed. Hence "Killer" . Fyi...the spit cup thing was an urban legend, it never happened but back in the early 70's there were all kinds of wild stories circulating around Alice Cooper. As all publicity is good publicity Alice never denied some of these stories. You ask what the big deal was with Alice Cooper,? well I'll tell you. Look at what's going on in todays society with the LGBTQ world. Now Imagine yourself back in in 1971 and a man with a woman's name, wearing makeup and wearing gold lame' pants and a leather bondage vest , singing songs about dead babies, hangs himself in front of 15000 screaming fans. It wasn't just a middle class freakout, it was a world wide phenomenon. Alice Cooper released their first album in 1969 but it was mid 1970 early 1971 when Alice Cooper exploded into the zeitgeist. Again it was 1971 , the Beatles had arrived in the US only 7 years earlier and they freaked people out. Now imagine yourself as a Goldwater Republican and your asking yourself how did we get from the Fab Four to, Alice Cooper in only 7 years? All decent people were pretty sure Alice was the anti-christ and being 12, 13, 14 years old at the time it was so much fucking fun!. 50 + years later and I'm still a fan.

I was 18 when "I'm 18" came out and had just graduated High School when "School's Out" came out. I was not impressed. I felt he was pandering for money and radio play. I remember when my mom drove me home from my last day of school the latter song was on our car radio. When we pulled into our driveway she let the song play out before turning the car off. possibly thinking it would mean something to me but it didn't. I was way more into the 60s love vibe, the Moodies, Beatles, Doors, Airplane. and the Dead. This track, however makes me think way more highly of him.

They had a sound like no other. Everyone noticed them. Alice intentionally did things to make people go nuts. Halo of Flies he looked like a sorcerer. Things like that drinking spit never did it. He probably started the rumor. Ther was ne show where someone tossed a chicken on stage and as a city boy, he didn't know they can't fly. He tossed it over the audience and when it came down The audience tore it up by fighting over it. The media told a story where he had ripped it's head off and drank the blood. The next time they played thy had chickens o stage and were accused of doing a song called stomp the chickens. As Alice aka Vince Fournier said make them talk about you then improve your image. He was sharp.

OK, not sure if this was mentioned yet or not.. but A: he took a live chicken back in a show from the 70's, and threw it into the audience, and the audience tore it apart and it mae headlines. He thought chickens could fly, so that was why he did it> B: he made up a myth that he got the name Alice Cooper from a Ouija board of an old dead witch so needless to say that fed the religious frenzy back then, too. Though in reality he's a preacher's son, and a born again beleiver. He even says in some of his interviews he made sure to stay away from satanism and things like that. I think there was even a reason behind his makeup too, but I forget that one. He has a concept album called "From the Inside" about his stint in a mental hospital and trying to get clean from alcohol and drugs.

Is this song about a cold war spy or something?

No, no, no; the cup of spit thing is an urban legend. You used to hear that one about Cooper or sometimes Zappa, there was also one that involved him eating his own poo onstage on a dare, another one where he passed out after the show and paramedics had to pump a gallon of semen out of his stomach. Heard that one about Cooper, Bowie, Elton John, Rod Stewart, basically any rock star teenage boys thought was a "queer"; all utter horseshit, but a lot of '70s 13-year-olds were absolutely convinced it was true.

The spitting in a cup sounds like total rubbish but you can bet your life Alice didn't deny it. I'm 66 and go to every concert in Manchester UK. The guy is a consumate entertainer. Been a fan since I was 14 when my brother brought home his first two albums from a German trip.

Yeah, the original Alice Cooper band was unbeatable; I lost interest when he started working with slick studio cats but I'll always be a fan of the guy.

That story of him drinking the spit is not real. The rest is.

I dont buy that spit drinking thing. His theatrics scared our parents and they didnt want us to see him. KIss too. He's not gross like that and been sober since the From the Inside album I think. A long time. Ted Nugent is also sober.
