Each song on his Welcome to my Nightmare album is a piece of the nightmare and really should be listened to as a whole….but each song is brilliant on its own too. Alice never disappoints…especially live.

I'm surprised to see this come up. Alice Cooper at his best is a stage performer. His music often allows for him to do things on stage. I saw him live and he kicked ass. You have to be into the art of what he's doing. He helped pioneer the genre "Shock Rock". He also has a great sense of humor and is quite a great guy despite his image of stage. I think this song makes more sense if you hear the whole album as a unit. It's just a part of a journey they take you through. Great reaction, I think songs like Billion dollar babies or other commercial tracks might be more your thing. It's all about context and if you don't know what you're getting yourself into, it's tough to understand what Alice Cooper can be. Thanks!

Harri, This was from 1975 when horror movies were big. Vincent Price did a cameo on this album. The album starts off with the song welcome to mi nightmare and works it way through some horror classics. Only women bleed was the big hit from this album as well as the title track. The album as a whole was a classic this track was more of a story from a twisted mind of the character that Alice was singing about. It was a deeper track and never meant to be a radio hit just a part of the concept album.

"Welcome To My Nightmare" is one of the best constructed albums of all time - in my humble opinion... For some reason it seems to be overlooked or disregarded for the pure genius that it is. I strongly suggest to you to have a look at the full album and you should be able to pick it up on here in a live performance from back in the day. It will surely blow your mind :)

Oh, sir! Mr. Alice Cooper, original glam shock rocker! This song is about a boy/man, with the mind of an 8-year-old, & his mind is consumed by a constant nightmare. As an adult, he becomes a psychotic killer. The song is from Mr. Cooper's album masterpiece, "Welcome To My Nightmare", which is also a gleefully ghoulish song. The whole album follows Steven's hideous life from innocent childhood to depraved adult. My fave Cooper song is also from that album, "Cold Ethyl". Wait till you hear THAT one, sir! Mr. Cooper has reinvented himself as Alice Cooper & the Hollywood Vampires, which features among its many luminaries, Mr. Joe Perry of Aerosmith, & Mr. Johnny Depp. They have a song you also may want to check out, sir - "Heroes". Thank you, sir, for reacting to one of rock 'n' roll's greatest innovators!

I used to love watching Night Gallery (and Twilight Zone) as a little kid and this album was like the sonic version. Then, Alice Cooper did a TV special around this album and that was it. No turning back at that point. He made it ok to be scared/thrilled.

Very good Harri. Few reactors ever get to this Alice Cooper album, much less this song. Actually, within the song Steven he is a man who has the character of himself as a a boy within him and the boy comes out to play. I bought the vinyl of this when it came out, and while my favorite is his earlier stuff with the original band, it is still very good, and shows yet another side to Alice Cooper. I quite like the orchestration in this, and the song/s have a wonderful sad heaviness that I really dig. Alice Cooper is an amazing composer. Quite a concept album it was. I saw Alice Cooper live in Iowa in like '79 and it was creepy shock rock vaudeville, really quite amazing even without the original band.

You should watch him live. Then you might understand better. He gives you the whole theatre package on stage - even with dancers. In 2013 I was at a concert of Alice. He blew me away. And I was lucky to see his wife (a trained ballerina) dancing/playing as a very creepy "Nurse Rosetta". She was fantastic! Sometimes his first born daughter dances for him, too. Alice combines horror with humour and vaudeville-show. He is the inventor of shock rock.

After looking through the comments on this I think most has been said. There are obviously MANY ways to interrupt it since yes its a concept album beginning to end, The ONE thing that have not read about these two songs is just how hard it would be to SING them in the way he does - SO many "different" voices and nuances in them! Young boy, Older Man, little bit off key, totally out right (with growl a bit) Eerily crazy! I personally think it show cases a lost fact that Alice had a GREAT voice used many ways in MANY different styles of songs! As a vocalist I think he has for many years been forgotten or over looked for how good his vocals are.

Alice Cooper as a band is a romp. You are exposed to crazy imagery, weird experiences, and all within a wonderful musical world. I think the worst thing a person can do is take them seriously, it's the end result, the really great music that makes them perennial. Love the band.

Hi Harri, this song is about a twisted little boy, playing evil games with dolls and such. There was a movie that this reminds me of called, Willard, which was about a boy, who WAS a social misfit, and whose only friends are a pair of rats, Socrates and Ben. When Socrates is killed by his boss, he uses the 2 rats, along with a bunch of their "newfound friends" to attack and kill the boss. That movie came out in 1971, and this song in 1975, and it seems to be portraying the same kind of social misfit type of person, always acting very strangely. For instance, when he says, "I'll put pennies on your eyes, and it will go away", it IS creepy ... because that's what they used to do to dead bodies to keep the eyes shut before they started gluing or sewing them closed. So, he is actually singing about killing something, telling them about what he's going to do to them, and acting like it's something he relishes to do. BTW, there was a remake of the movie, Willard, released in 2003, starring Crispin Glover portraying Willard, and Bruce Davison (the original Willard) making a cameo as Willard's father. Davidson was also featured in other films you may have seen or heard of, such as the X-Men film franchise (X-Men (2000) and X2 (2003)) where he portrayed the antagonist, Senator Robert Kelly.

If you listen to the words, it tells the story of a man with the mind of a child who kills his wife...'and it makes him feel like a man'. 'Years Ago' sets the stage, 'Steven' is the murder and 'The Awakening' is the realization...that's my take.
