Great reaction! Babymetal's music is very diverse so their fanbase is very diverse as well. When I first got into Babymetal I got into that metal vs not metal argument but then realized it was a waste of time. Who cares!!? It's F'n good! That is all that matters. I saw them in early March in Japan. It was wild. What you said about them being “gorgeous” and “cute” is spot on because when we got our first good look at the three current women, my wife said, “They’re so beautiful!” Video doesn’t do them justice. As far as them being metal or not, while Babymetal is definitely unique, they’re absolutely metal. Those who say they’re not are typically narrow-minded older men who want music to conform to their image of what metal should be, and Metal has never been about conformity.

Being 58 years old I have seen hundreds of live bands. Big bands, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. Having seen Baby Metal live last fall Su's live vocals may be the best I've ever heard. I can't even imagine the work and rehearsal time it takes to prepare for a tour. The work ethic is out of this world. You might react to "Maya" live of course. That will settle the metal/not metal debate once and for all. Great reaction by the way.

They were rocking out the whole World Tour 2023/2024 and everyone were having a blast with the setlist, the new songs from latest album and the classic hits, especially GC! either you hate or love it, is a song with crazy amount of views and they don't wanna leave behind in any of their setlist like the one you saw at Glasgow during Sabaton's Europe Tour, they're very good friends since a long time ago as well many more metal bands and artists you'll see along with the girls not only taking pictures together but also playing together or in the same stage, in fact Joakim Brodem was part of a live performance when playing META TARO live at Dark Night Carnival 2018 and got a song together with OH! MAJINAI, suggest you the live at Budokan 2021 if you wanna enjoy a safe version around. Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop (no Kpop involved ) and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey. This isn't actually live sound, is studio album version over a live performance which was partially live only on the vocals and choreography with backing track sound. They have their own band called Kami Band introduced later on that same show and after that Kami Band become regular at live performance but they're not official members, only these trio are the front women. BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute) mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal". They are: *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 26. *MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24. *YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018. *MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 21 and is the new official member since April 1st last year. None of them are related. After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said. This was in December 2013 at SuMetal 16th Birthday, the other girls had 14 yo and there was a big party you have seen nothing yet, wait for _"Babymetal Death"._ The backing band here are called "baby-bones", they don't actually play they're just mimicking air playing instrument, later on this same concert and after 2014 you'll see the girls performing with a real band called the Kami Band, more of them later. Were you at OVO Hydro in Glasgow April 2023? Yep, 6th song out of 7 was Gimme Chocolate. That setlist is a mix of old and new with songs from all 4 studio albums. The truly spectacular Babymetal shows are their monster live shows in Japan. In 2018 Sabaton was an opening act for them in Japan. And Sabaton's lead singer, Joakim Brodén, performed on their song "Oh! MAJINAI" from the 2019 album Metal Galaxy. They toured the US in 2019 with Avatar as their opening act. Avatar's lead singer, Johannes Eckerström, said they were more like Cirque du Soleil than a band. Metal has always had a strong, often over-the-top, theactricality and Babymetal excels at it.

The one 'giving good face' would be Moa-metal (aka Moa Kikuchi), called the Angel of Smile sometimes; her offsider here is Yui-metal, who is a bit more restrained normally and a more precise dancer, so often called the Angel of Dance. Yui sadly left in 2018, but Moa remains, and as you noticed, she is a born performer and entertainer. If you want to see the best example IMO of the value Moa and Yui bring to Babymetal, then Headbanger live at Legend 1997 is it. Su-metal is an incredible singer and the Kami Band are fantastic, and together would be 10/10 by themselves. Yui and Moa dial it up to 11, they are the edge that allows Babymetal to have the high energy choreography and crowd engagement, allowing Su to focus on belting out killer vocals. Excellent first reaction, welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊Seeing them supporting Sabaton probably wasn't the ideal (especially if you were a bit out of it). They were quite limited on both time and space with Sabaton's tank behind all the covers etc and they couldn't even use the screen for extra visuals - and it was hard to really see them with Sabaton's posts and barbed wire across the front of the stage. I saw them on that tour at Wembley Arena ... sadly I got into them just too late to see them headlining Wembley Arena (it was a solo show, their first arena show outside of Japan) in 2016. Fortunately I have also seen them headlining at Brixton, Hammersmith and Camden Roundhouse ... and I've never been better entertained by any other band at any other concert (and I've seen many of the recognised great live bands over the last 4 or 5 decades. As you saw for yourself, you will see all sorts of people of all ages at their concerts from parents with young daughters cosplaying as BABYMETAL to hairy bikers in their leathers, married couples in their 30s, old rockers in their 60s and older who had become disillusioned or bored but who have had their love for music rekindled by BABYMETAL. 'Gimme Chocolate' wouldn't be my own recommendation for a first reaction, it can be polarising ... its great fun at a live show of course, but there is so much more to them than this one song. Picking just one song to suggest is so hard - nearly 70 songs and each one different to the last and pretty much every song is somebody's favourite. At a push I'd probably have to say 'Megitsune' represents who and what they are as well as any other song. Oh yes, Su-metal's vocals are always live (always have been right from when they started in 2010 when she was 12). The whole concept was formed and developed around her vocal talents and stage presence. There are specific sections of specific songs where the vocals are on backing track (eg harsh screams, a bit when she is behind the mask in 'Megitsune', the "Parapapa" parts in 'Gimme Chocolate, some harmonies she pre-recorded - but not her main vocal lines). Yuimetal and Moametal were singing live a lot more and a lot earlier than even some fans give them credit for, likewise now Moametal and Momometal's vocals are live more than people think, although they may get some help from the backing track where the choreo is particularly energetic.

Thanks for this reaction, seeing Babymetal for the first time is... a shock to the system. A common reaction is literally WTF. They combine opposites in many ways. It's part of what makes them interesting. Yes, metal is counter culture, but in some ways Babymetal is: the counter culture inside the metal counter culture. They are not fully accepted, but they are much much more accepted as time goes on. They've now existed for 13+ years and known more broadly in the west for some 10 years. And Babymetal is for everyone, all ages, all races, regardless of borders and cultures and despite all backgrounds in music, etc. You can actually see little kids at a Babymetal show, with industrial hearing protection on, possible on the shoulder of a dad. 🙂 Babymetal is pretty much family friendly (no sexy image for the ladies in Babymetal, no swearing, etc. actually, can be inspirational, as they've done things nobody thought possible), sometimes the bands they tour with are not though. They also know their limits, they perform a single hour and no more. Or when they have big stage shows, they will stretch it to 1 and a half. Great reaction! Babymetal is absolutely amazing. *My take on their uniqueness:* They are a manufactured group starting as a passion project by a metalhead producer stuck in the J-Pop Idol industry. This concept was never taken seriously early on so minimal budget, and they grew their fan base organically. The girls, the session band (Kami Band), and the team behind Babymetal worked tirelessly for the past 14 years to become an established heavy weight that blew away expectations from their initial “gimmick”. This video was Dec 2013 from the “Legend 1997” concert for lead Su-metal’s 16th birthday. It is live footage with studio audio. The skeleton costumed band was still their early era “fake band”, and music played to track. Babymetal just got big in Japan back then, and didn’t quite have the budget for a full backing band. The following year (2014), their actual band, the Kami Band backed them fully. A Babymetal show is a metal dance party. Live, Su, the lead singer, songs live. The other two, sometimes sing live, sometimes don't. I've seen them on successive nights and once was live, and the other was backing tracks, but the main vocal is live. At a guess it may depend on how they feel on a given night? It is quite the workout. Some people say they practice singing on a treadmill, but that's a myth. We honestly don't know, they've never said. They have seriously good cardio though.

My personal favorite to suggest to new listeners is "Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (Official)" from Babymetal's channel. It is an iconic live performance of one of their most loved songs, and is the one that personally hooked me on them, one of the best single performances I've ever seen and it is from their early career. Also, his is not a suggestion that will necessarily blow you away, but they did collab with Sabaton (Joakim in particular) on a song "Oh Majanai!" which is a favorite of Su-Metal. I am a 52 year old American grumpy af guy and my only exposure to metal was on MTV in the early 80's. Then I discovered BABYMETAL a few years ago, and they were my "gateway" group that made me interested in current metal music. What's funny to me is how many metalheads put down BABYMETAL, but I guarantee that most of these guys are too young to remember how popular glam metal was in the 80s before growling became the main vocals for metal music.

Speaking of the finale, _Road_ _of_ _Resistance_ is one of those all-time classic BM songs, and you do get the live audio in the official live version so that might be a good one to react to - you can compare the UK crowd to the Japanese crowd!

You asked about lip-synching. They did lip-synch for their very, earliest shows. Su-Metal started singing live soon after. The other girls started singing live later still (maybe not yet in this video, so only Su-Metal was probably singing live here). They couldn't afford a live band early on, so if you see the 'baby bones' band, like in this track, the music was a backing track. They went to a live band permanently, starting at their first Budokan concert. So, eventually, everyone was singing and playing live (along with some occasional effects or harmonies on a backing track). Anyway, that's my understanding of their history. If anyone has corrections, please let us know.

I think I saw this one when it first came out and made its way through the internet. It was weird, but at the same time really good. Personally, I think the instrumental part is just awesome. You can let any metal fan hear that and they will propably like it. If you like the Jpop influences or not is another thing, but you can't say it isn't well done. I personally also have alot of respect for any singer /dancer who can keep up this amount of dancing and movement on stage for a whole concert. This is exhausting so... respect

I'm not sure what I can add to the information you already have from much more knowledgeable people here, but I'll try 🙂 This is generally the song that many hear the first time they encounter Babymetal on the internet. The video portion is live, but the sound is from the studio version. There is in fact a fully live version of this performance which is much more exciting. However this was also their earliest years, when they were mid-teens and at the height of their kawaii-ness. I love all the songs from this period (and every other era of Babymetal), and a number of their songs from this period have themes that are generally related to the concerns of girls that age. Thus, this one is about wanting a piece of chocolate, but being a bit worried that it will add a pound or two lol. They aren't playing with a real band here, as they first had a mime band composed of Amuse staff members. But starting with this concert, I think, they introduced the Kami Band, a who were a select group of top Japanese metal talent. Since 2018 or so, their songs have gained a mature edge, without sacrificing their sweetness, quite a feat. And the music itself has just gotten better and better. I shall watch with great interest your journey down the Fox Hole 🙂

So you were asking if they lipsync because you didn't hear them heavy breathing: Yes and No. I mean, this that you see is the footage of a live performance, but with the Studio version dubbed over! Let's say that the main singer sings live at shows, and might lipsync just some small parts that have some vocal effects of some screams. The backup vocals used to lipsync a lot when younger, much less right now, but it's sometimes hard to say for sure. But they sound fantastic live 😄

The Babymetal journey is a long way, they had been around for 14 years and they pass through some eras . This is a MV , the footage was of concert call Legend 1997 , there is not real musicians in this song and the soundtrack is the studio version. Saw them at both shows in Camden in Nov, both epic and soooo much fun. Su does sing in real time, but if I'm honest I think there is a fair amount of lipsync with Moa and Momo; if you listen to Gimme Chocolate from any KZbin vid across their European tour, the Zukkyun, Dokkyun always sounds exactly the same, no variation whatsoever. That's not a criticism cos I bloody love them. Can't wait for another London date(s)!! 🤟🦊🤟

One thing I haven't noticed in the comments is about the content of the song--which is about fat-shaming. The essence of the lyrics is that girls shouldn't have to fight the desire to eat a single piece of chocolate because they are afraid of looking fat. Many of their songs have this sort of message - trying to tell young people they don't have to conform to be happy and shouldn't harm themselves because they aren't popular, and that bullying always brings payback, often from even nastier bullies (their song Karma). so besides being amazingly themselves and very very professional about it, they do have a positive message going out to their fanbase

For context, in many asian countries (Japan and Korea especially), girls have a bad feeling about being fat, since all the images in advertisement promote beautiful and slender women, because its the beauty standard over there (and people love looking at pretty things, even women, its no secret). In western culture this has changed for better AND worse, but yeah, even if you want to be pretty, you can eat sweets and chocolate, you just balance it out. Its not that hard. Why do you think men in fitness have a cheat day, where they eat whatever they want to balance out their also quite strict diet when putting on muscles in the gym?

Road of Resistance A short set featuring their classic opening from the 1st album, their first independent single Megitsune (❤), also from BABYMETAL album, then a peek at their third one with PA PA YA!!, really entertaining, then you got one of the random song for that tour, Divine Attack from their last album, written by SU herself, I'd say you were lucky, but The Other ONE is such a good album, every choice is a win 😅, and the following Monochrome is indeed proving that ❤. Their most famous song Gimme 🍫, they still have a lot of fun with this one, even after all these years, as with their most used ending song, Road of Resistance, the only one from Metal Resistance, arguably their best album along TOO. I watched them in Berlin in that same tour, I've to say that they delivered, but without the right crowd, there's a lot missing, BABYMETAL are very much about interaction, also the stage was problematic, as the girls are... "smol", so the Sabton props were concealing part of their choreographies. Still Monochrome was arguably the best song of the entire show. 🤘🦊⚡️

my top five favorite bands of all time are massacre, vader, bolt thrower, napalm death, and carcass. but when i get dibs on the speaker at the gym, im often blasting babymetal. i understand not liking it. or not caring for any particular thing for that matter. but writing it off because it's not "real metal" is ridiculous to me. it's 100% produced. but like most things the japanese produce, it's fucking quality. there's an insane amount of talent and it's fun.

The first patchs on jacket were Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, AC/DC and many more but out of all of the bands / artists no one gives me so much joy as BabyMetal . Not many bands people would travel hundreds of miles to see let alone thousands( and they do ). I travelled 500 miles round trip everytime i have seen them and queued up to 12 hours . Worth it to see them especially if it's a BabyMetal show best experience ever . BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the original 3 girls (Yui left due to health issues) were 11-12 years old (yes, they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Download, Sonisphere, Glastonbury, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. By the way, they have some really great heavy songs too, and I hope you like guitar solos, as well as bass and drum solos, like I do, because they have them too. Also, they released a new amazing album last year and they just finished a world tour where they had many shows here in the US. They also recently released a new music video for their song called "Metali" that features Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello. Nemophila is kinda a funnier version with some singing and screaming vocals. But I’m more a rock than metal guy so my favorite is Band-Maid.🔥 The Maids are an all-around great rock band that incorporate all styles to rock and metal and write every type of song. And they do everything at the highest level - composition, arrangement, instrumentation, songwriting, orchestration, recording, production, playing and performance. They are truly one of the top bands on the planet 🌏 and I’m sure you’ll come to see that if you take the journey through their 10-year catalog. Other great songs to check out are - “Bestie” - OMV - all English lyrics - co-written music with guitarist Mike Einzinger of INCUBUS. - “Domination” - official live video. - “Don’t You Tell Me” - Official live video - “Endless Story” - OLV - they show real love and appreciation to their fans. Good reaction, subscribed. I see that some are recommending the Sabaton collaboration Oh! MAJINAI. You should definitely check it out, but just be aware that it's one of the more "controversial" BM songs. For some fans, it's their least favorite Babymetal song, while others find it a fun romp. I can fall on either side depending on what mood I'm in, haha. But all the other recommendations are spot on. Also, I second the recommendation to check out Lovebites at some point, they are very different from Babymetal but absolutetly fantastic. I envy you to still have all of that to discover.

Nice one, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL. "Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried worried about their weight. But, yeah those instrumentals are very, very metal and the juxtaposition with the cute vocals, lyrics and choreo was totally the point of the song and the reason why this music video went viral back in 2014. Helping them a lot tbh. It's their most "popular" song (and the most usual entry song) but probably not their best one. This music video has the studio version of the audio over the visuals from the concert Legend 1997 held to celebrate Su-metal's (the lead singer) 16th birthday. It was the song's live premiere. Yes, Su-metal always sings live. They also use backing tracks for harmonizing and such things. I also saw them during the tour with Sabaton, but in Berlin in my case. Well Babymetal was built around the idea to not really attract you common metal audience. They have a fanbase of about 40% females and all ages between 5 and 85 in this song Su (the older sister) is quite a bit bothered by the little ones. The basic premise is the same but they improved the choreo a bit. In the begining it was often enough a bit hyperaktiv while today they can dance if they want to. They still use this song as a a memory of their old times but otherwise they ate now based stronger on their a bit more grown up Segments of their songs. So in general they tend to go after it in more heavy (Distorzion) or Party (Papaya) Songs. And not the early compromises when Koba had to think how he could sell more heavy elements to the girls.

Gimme Chocolate is Babymetal’s most famous song. They play it at almost every live show they do. Babymetal absolutely do not lip sync, they are just insanely fit, and their dance routines are designed to allow them moments of stability for the parts where they need to sing. You’ve got the right idea with the Sailor Moon comparison. According to Babymetal lore, they are chosen by Kitsune-sama (The Fox God) to save metal from the tyranny of the idols. They are meant to be ordinary girls transformed by the power of the Fox God into heavy metal superheroes. That’s why they have super hero names Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) the lead vocalist), Yuimetal ( Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) the backing vocalists and dancers. Babymetal and the fans are long past caring about the whole “is it metal?” question. It doesn’t matter. They are pure fun and joy, and that’s all that matters. The lore has an interesting origin: the tale goes the girls were shown photos of the metal horns hand gesture and mistook it for the head of a fox, so giving rise to their kitsune variant of the metal horns gesture. Presumably Key Kobayashi (aka KOBAMETAL, their founder/producer) ran with the idea and mixed in elements of Kitsune mythology. This also gave rise to their infamous stock answer to questions they weren't allowed to answer: "Only the fox god knows."

Babymetal can be the center of so much hype only because they are so good you really can't ignore them.
