Jeremy was a kid that was going through troubles at school and at home. It is based on a true story of a kid who killed himself in front of his class. The lyrics and video take artistic license, to some extent, and paint a picture of a kid who is sensitive, artistic, and good but who is going through pain -- probably emotional. He may also be bullied at school. The critical point is that the parents are checked out and they don't give him the love and support he needed during this dark time in his life. Now, that part is not accurate to the true story, from what I understand. I believe the real parents were trying to help him and were communicating/supporting but something made the kid snap and he took his own life. You should see the official video. it's intense. Great reaction, Bisscute!

@@aarondavis2698 that's not true and not what I meant. The second verse is from the bullies perspective but it's about Jeremy. This song is a story of two separate children. One of them was an actual kid called Jeremy who shot himself in front of his English class and the other was a kid Eddie went to school with who once brought in a gun and shot a fish tank.

I always felt like it was a given that he was bullied at school and wanted the other kids to know they are the reason he killed himself and wanted to make them suffer knowing it, which is the reason he did it in front of them perhaps because I talked to 2 persons who in adult life told me they were close to doing something similar when they were younger due to being bullied, so I think of them and how many others there might be that thought of doing it too

Jeremy Wade Dell he read the story in the newspaper then he remembered a similar situation that happened at his high school while he was going there but he wasn't there that day. So he heard about it from friends. But this kid that he bullied on a fairly regular basis committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the school. So he took parts of both stories when he wrote this song.

Jeremy "spoke" metaphorically. He made a statement by shooting himself, having been neglected by his parents and bullied at school. You nailed most of it, just not the payoff. The uncut MV is pretty clear as to the meaning. Eddie's vocal is probably better here than in the studio version, as its raw power when unleashed is a force of nature. Probably helped along by having to compete with Dave Abbruzzese's barely restrained drumming in his right ear. 30 years later and Pearl Jam are still touring, with four of the original five members, the fifth member having been with them since 1998.

Eddie Vedder wrote 'Jeremy' back in 1991 about a particular issue that was not addressed a lot back then - teen suicides... school bullying... The song was inspired by the story he had read about a high school kid in Texas named Jeremy Wade Delle who had apparently killed himself in front of his class, apparently having had enough of being tormented in school and at home... Vedder himself knew kids in school who had difficult lives and couldn't cope. The music video made for 'Jeremy' in 1992 by director Mark Pellington was a powerful (and sad) depiction of the song, portraying a young boy who is the only one moving in the video (everything else is still) like he is living in pictures and the video grows darker as the boy seems to become more agitated... It became a huge hit on MTV back in '92 and put Pearl Jam into superstardom (which they hated... they refused to do any music videos for years after). U can see the uncensored version now, but back then, they had to edit the video... there was a shot of a school class giving a nazi salute during the assembly... and in the final scene showing the boy walking into his class, they didn't show him pulling out a gun and putting it in his mouth (the edited video shows the boy face the class and zooms in on his face as he closes his eyes). The last still is of the class kids holding up their hands and u can see blood flying in the air.

Bisscute My name irl is Jeremy. Don't tell anyone!!! 😂 I was the quiet, keep to myself type of kid. Didn't come outta my shell until high school. In early school years, it was something if i spoke in class, cos I didn't speak unless i had something of merit to say. I was reading before kindergarten and pretty smart. Missed being gifted by 3 points on the tests. Had 1 friend all thru grade school but, he went to a different (Christian) school, so i only hung out with him sometimes. Lost contact after my family split and moved. Have had other friends but, never felt as close to someone like i did with JD. So this song, i sung a LOT. I think i was 12th grade when it came out. I i spoke in class, ppl listened, cos it was very rare. I'm more sociable now, but still need plenty of time alone, just me, the Lord, my thoughts and guitar. Why do i feel like I'm selling myself? Why am i saying any of this? God, i have no life!!! 😮😢

Check out Pearl Jam playing "Porch," live at Pink Pop 1992. Will give you a better sense of what the band is really like when they're not doing one of their slow ballads in these unplugged performances. The ballads are great, sure, second to none, but that was never their focus -- it's just what everyone who doesn't know the group instantly associates them with, because this was the song that went mainstream. It's like saying Red Hot Chili Peppers are a slow ballad band because of Under the Bridge. Bring a change of pants.

It was a true story about a boy in Texas who was bullied in school and had a bad home life who ended up shooting himself in front of his class, hence the "Jeremy Spoke In Class Today" chorus. The official video to this song is intense but gives a clear picture of the story. Brace yourself at the end of it if you watch the un-censored version, it hits hard... the Censored one does too but there is one scene that is omitted for good reason and for general public viewing.

The song Jeremy was inspired by a newspaper article that vocalist Eddie Vedder read about Jeremy Wade Delle, a high school student who shot himself in front of his English class on January 8, 1991.The music was written by bassist Jeff Ament. That goes to show that taunting someone relentlessly can have serious consequences. The song kind of reminds me of the song Hey Man Nice Shot by rock band Filter.

This song is about both a kid named Jeremy who killed himself infront of his class with a gun and a kid named Brian who did something somewhat similar. Jeremy was troubled but his family did care. The second part of the song is about a boy named Brian who Eddie Vedder had altercations with in school. Brian came to school with a gun and shot at his classmates. Pearl Jam seemed to be upset when the song was released that it was misinterpreted due to sensorship at the time (at least for the music video). The song is essentially about bullying and school shootings.

I love music very dearly but have no training or real education of it. Music theory, which is the advanced and technical side of it, interests me greatly even tho I can’t grasp as much as I’d like to. But there are a lot of books out there about bands and singers and scenes. They always contain tons of terms to pick up on. And I think Eddie is one of the more genuine artists. His heart seems so real and true.

It’s a very sad story about Jeremy who was so bullied and felt unloved by his parents that he finally spoke in class one day when he killed himslef in front of his class. Some of the lyrics to this song hit harder after more than one listening. If you watch the music video it's more explicit that he ends up killing himself in front of his class. Then when you relisten to the song, lyrics like "And he hit me with a surprise left. left my jaw hurting, dropped wide open. Just like the day I heard" knowing he is talking about the day he heard of the suicide, and "Try to forget this. Try to erase this from the black board" is talking about the blood spatter on the blackboard. Powerful stuff.

/You have to watch the original video of this song to understand better the song, is very... illustrating! That was the video which introduced me one of my favorite bands ever! I saw them last Sunday in NYC on 9/11 and they were PHENOMENAL!!!! Fun fact: I've seen them twice and they skip this song from those 2 shows :( which is weird because even when they don't play certain hits the show is still one of the best concerts that you might see, that proves you how Amazing this band is!!!!

Bisscute, I would like to introduce you to Angelina Jordan, a Norwegian singer, who is my favorite. I think you will like her cover of Elvis Presley, s Suspicious Minds, and many more.
