The Gladbeck hostage crisis (also known as the Gladbeck hostage drama) was a high-profile crime in the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands in the summer of 1988, during which three people were killed. The bank robbery and subsequent hostage-taking began in Gladbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and ended after around 54 hours on Autobahn 3 near Bad Honnef with an attack by the Cologne police special operations command (SEK). In the aftermath of the crime, there was massive criticism of the behavior of the police and reporters and a social debate about the responsibility and limits of journalism was initiated. On August 16, 1988, the two main perpetrators, Hans-Jürgen Rösner and Dieter Degowski, attacked the Deutsche Bank branch in a shopping center in the Rentfort district of Gladbeck. Rösner's girlfriend Marion Löblich joined the perpetrators in the evening of the same day. During their escape, they took hostages several times and drove with them through northwestern Germany and the Netherlands. After a stay in downtown Cologne, the three hostage takers were arrested in the early afternoon of August 18, 1988 when the SEK seized them. While escaping in a hijacked bus, Degowski shot and killed 14-year-old Italian Emanuele De Giorgi. On the way to the crime scene, 31-year-old police officer Ingo Hagen died in a traffic accident in Bremen. During the final police operation on the highway, another hostage, 18-year-old Silke Bischoff, was fatally shot. The forensic examination revealed that the projectile came from Rösner's weapon. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intense public debate. Among other things, several interviews were conducted with the perpetrators, a press photographer acted as a liaison to the police and a Cologne journalist rode in the getaway car to show the perpetrators the way out of the city center. This was about the media's glorification of violence and the need for the perpetrators for that media validation and support. The irony was that the US premier for this song was scheduled for 11 September 2001, but was obviously canceled because of the ultimate media spectacle that day. The award the band is getting at the start of the video is the German equivalent of the American Emmy Award, honoring the best in TV.

I am not sure what the initially motivation for this song was, but we had in Germany in the 80ies a heist with taking hostages and than driving with a bus through Germany. And there was a high media attention, including interviews. The bank robber were more or less in control of the media. (Gladbeck hostage crisis) After that there was a lively debate what the media should do and should not do.

From the shows I've seen in person, the crowd participation for this song is way up there. Maybe even the most interactive out of all their songs. _"Can you all hear me?" "We hear you!" Some of their songs are inspired by real events or crimes that have taken place in Germany. This one reminds me a lot of the Gladbeck hostage crisis (you can look it up, there's a Wiki article, but there are also many photos of the terrified hostages, some of which ended up getting killed), where the police couldn't intervene and save the hostages because of the media presence, journalists and photographers, but also bystanders were following the vehicles (a bus and a car, I don't remember which was first), and so the police just couldn't do anything without endangering people. But it's also about how, in general, the criminals are turned into "celebrities" by the media, and the ghoulish curiosity people have about criminals, with all those "true crime" documentaries, etc. This song is 22 years old, there were no smartphones, nor social media, really (at least not like today), even the Internet was rudimentary compared to nowadays. These official videos usually have automatically generated subtitles, they're not bad, better than some "translation" sites where the translations are really bad.

This song and video were from 2001, on their 3rd album, I believe. It's funny seeing their keyboardist wearing a bomb for the whole video. On the subject of deep voiced singers... one of these days, you should hear Geoff Castelucci. He does lots of deep voiced song covers, and is also a member of VoicePlay, an a capella band. Hello. Given how you introduce yourself, you might be interested in one of Till’s solo song videos (from a few weeks ago) ‘Sport Frei’: it seems to be about the physical and mental repercussions of being a professional athlete. In his youth, Till had been unable to take part in the 1980 Olympics (as a swimmer) due to an injury. Till’s singing in the chorus is fantastic.

this song is about the influence of media. its also at the same time an epic live interaction with the crowd (you have the crowd in the background of the video). you should watch a live version. many of rammstein songs you have to watch in different versions to get a full view. also i suggest if you want to see the vids with subtitles look out for the versions from "educated marine" and "bückstaboo". and i recommend the fan made video from the song "spring" that actually directs to bystanders. greetings

But then alot of small refferences and word plays just dont translate well into english and get lost in translation. I dont think you need to know the lyrics to enjoy and have a opinion about a song. But yes diving into a rammstein songs lyrics is verry fun! Luckily im german so i dont have to struggle with problems of flawed translations or wordolays that dont work in english. A good example of what i mean is the song deutschland specificly the line "deutschland, deutschland über allen" It is a changed version of a section of german anthem from 1871 to 1945 that was since removed. The original version went "deutschland, deutschland über allem" And the version in the song goes "Deutschland, deutschland über allen" The difference between allem and allen in german is huge and changes the meaning of the line completely but in english both translate to "Germany, germany above all" Loosing the meaning of the change from allem to allen

Hello Stacey, i am a big Fan from Rammstein. This Year were a big Controversy about the Band and their Behaviour. But a Rammstein Concert is not a Kinderjausen (means A Snack for little Kids). Rockmusic is not German Schlagermusik. It is hard , intensive and draging along. I like your Videos, so i use them to learn better the English Language. Hey Stacey, maybe a little bit late... but you saw at the end of this music video some clip of music videos from Rammstein which were released before. The song "Ich Will" was released on the third Rammstein album "Mutter" in 2001. To start from the beginning: The band Rammstein was founded 1994 in Berlin - and released their first album "Herzeleid" in 1995. You could react to their first music video for the song "Du riechst so gut" (translated into: "You smell so good") (1995) - funfact there is also another official music video for "Du riechst so gut" in 1998, because they didn´t like the style they respresented theirselves as a band in the ´95 version. The songs from there first album sound much more aggressiv, because Till hasn´t been a singer before Rammstein and had his first vocal coach lessons in 1996. So the songs are much more in a spoken-singing style than later released albums. Another song form the album Herzeleid is "Seemann" ("sailor") which has also a music video. If you want to know more about the beginning of Rammstein write a comment, and I will give you more information.

You are right about one thing there is no restraint with rammstein and no filter. Just recently till got somewhat infamous for fucking fans while on stage... and to be honest that was the most normal controversy... one time one band member wrapped himself completely in ductape to transport the... message of the song... and collapsed lets not get started on the flamethrower stage shows... To be honest Rammstein always has a double meaning in their songs so translations are advised but many of this meanings are hidden behind german double meanings of words and maybe even with translation hard to get without explanation.
