@@annother3350 if you know about it, it's not really a conspiracy. Secrets are something you tell one other person. The juggled balls necessary to keep any conspiracy secret are nearly impossible to keep in the air. It always falls apart. But lots of people are drawn to them in order to have a reason for the world not being to their liking, like they are special and one "in the know" above the sheeple. Conspiracy theory hunting is like an adult pacifier.

These guys are still going strong as they just released a great new LP this year (The Tipping Point) and was lucky enough to see them earlier in the summer with Garbage. Its a great track in it's own right, with so many moods and vibes. Layer on layer of sounds and voices. Yet it's also a great tribute to the Beatles in their psychedelic period in 1967. You can hear echoes of the Serjeant Pepper Album , Penny Lane, I am the Walrus, Fool on the Hill etc blowing through this song.

@@Ranadkins that album was just Roland Orzabal. He and Curt had a bad falling out after "The Seeds of Love" and Roland took the name. Elemental is a very good album, but there were several angry tracks directed at Curt (along with the one new track on "Tears Roll Down"). I was very happy when they reunited in 2005 for the "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" album.

Late 80's: There was a huge 60's retro renaissance happening. The Beatles were rereleased on CD for the first time, "Classic Rock" radio became a thing, and our generation was waking up to the fact that the 60's and 70's offered so much more than the tepid pop of the day. Tie-dye was back in fashion! Acts like Tears for Fears, World Party, and the second acts of actual 60's and 70's icons like the Travelling Wilburys, The Beach Boys, and many others were putting the 60's aesthetic back in the mainstream. This song was a huge hit because it tapped into those cultural waves. Our generation was starved for real, organic music. It was a great time to be a teenager!

Somebody already said it already, but... This song is so Beatle-esque and complex and satisfying it makes me feel even more wonderful than I thought I could possibly feel about a song. Sometimes I simply sit back and marvel at how a tiny island nation like England can produce so many genius songwriters/performers. England makes my much more densely populated hometowns of Seattle and New York seem musically retarded at times. If that makes any sense. I've suddenly decided that I don't make any sense, but still... They may have lost the Revolutionary War, but the UK managed to invade and conquer the USA anyway. Bravo.

Definitely a tribute to The Beatles. Message is basically that Love trumps hate. Saw them in concert recently, which was mind blowing-ly good. Check out "Woman in Chains," will give you chills. And you’re right Lex, popular music has gone downhill, fatally around ‘97. Result of corporations taking over the music industry. The final outcome of a decade of deregulation, starting with Reagan. A lot of what this song was railing against, in the name of love.

This came out when I was in my freshman year of high school, and it's always given me Beatles vibes, both musically and thematically. The song is about swallowing ones pride, letting go of hate, and spreading love: ideas straight out of the 60s. Trends tend to come back every 20 years later, and there was definitely a retro 60s movement in the late 80s, and it showed in fashion, movies (lots of movies about the Vietnam War were made during that time), and music. I remember one group in particular that hit it big in '89, Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, who went for a Carole King-like sound.

I'm surprised you didn't pick up The Beatles' influence (unless you aren't that familiar with The Beatles). Tears for Fears are fantastic, one of the best bands ever, and still turning out great music today. Have you heard Woman in Chains from the same album yet? One of the most jaw dropping songs ever. Their next album, after this one, was Elemental, just amazing. Check out the title cut Elemental, Break It Down Again, Mr. Pessimist, and my favorite Goodnight Song. The next album after Elemental, Raoul and the Kings of Spain is breathtaking. Lush, dense, and very underrated, again the title cut is incredible, Secrets, and God's Mistake all are very good. This is a band whose talent, production and engineering rivals Steely Dan and are definitely worth diving into. Great reaction!

Lex’s speech about this song is pretty brilliant. I’ve never seen a young person articulate it so well, as she did about what this song would make you hope for about future music, but instead it ‘went down a cliff’. Oh!! That was funny. And pretty accurate. And it’s true, you can still find popular great music in the 90’s and beyond, but something definitely took a shift in the 80’s. And not for the good. Music got cheaper. Corner’s we’re cut for money and popularity. Art got commercial. But, though I say that, I could list lots of songs and artists since the 70’s that are great. But as a whole, something took a dive. Music got designed too much for clubbing (‘70’s disco started that - not that all of it is bad - but there much more bad disco than good) or, it got too shock for shock’s sake. Or angry for anger’s sake. Like with grunge and rap. Something got sacrificed, music-wise. It’s great when anger and depression and ‘stick it to the man’ can motivate music or a song, but always make sure the music or the song doesn’t suffer and take second place to your statement. Otherwise why do it in a song, just hold up a sign. Something happened though and it’s not easy to explain. It’s a topic that many people can get very opinionated with, including me. But something fell in quality. Some sort of uniqueness and creativity got lost. But that may only be in mainstream music; popular, on the radio and TV music, because if the mostly unknown great music out there, got the exposure it should, we’d be saying a different tune about modern music. What gets the airplay is really no reflection of the quality that exists if you look for it, because there is music happening now that is at least as good as the greatest music there has always been. Music that puts today’s popular music to absolute shame.

Dancing is fine, its fun. Had no issues with disco. Lot of rap is also fun (mostly the older ones). I wouldn't shoot down the whole genre. I pretty much agree about what you've stated about grunge, though. It's mainly emo/depressing music and style.

Already by the late 1980s a lot of "Bleak" music had come into the mainstream, Emo stuff with a general "What's the point" message - but of course that intensified a lot during the 1990s and there were (and still are) threads of music that reek of a loss of all hope. I personally always read this song as a "hippie rage" song, From the first lines: High time we made a stand shook up the views of the common man These were British guys living in Margaret Thtacher's "Money before people" Britain and raging against that. I take it to be someone saying "Hey! Wake up everyone, let's get more assertive in making those 1960s and 1970s love-your-fellow-man-spread-love-and-peace dreams come true". Musically, yes it borrows a lot from the Beatles, but lyrically I think it holds its own ground. The video was ground breaking at the time too - to have all those effects and artworks on a pop video in 1989 was something relatively new.

Obviously they preferred Paul Weller in the Jam than in the The Style Council (huge band in the UK early 80’s who disbanded at the height of their popularity when Paul left to form The Style Counsel.). Phil Spector may have invented the "Wall of Sound" - but in this incredible song, Tears for Fears added a pagoda roof, mirrored ceiling, shag carpeted walls and trippy inlayed parquet floors to it. I got see them in concert in May 2022. The first time I saw them in concert was in the 80s they sound exactly the same from there album.... They are sooooo damn good live, you have to see them live before they retire..

My favourite lyric is "Kick out The Style bring back The Jam" - a reference to Paul Weller's 80s outfit The Style Council, a funk/soul band that were never as well received as his earlier, punkier, angrier group The Jam. Incredible, complex and powerful song.

This is a great pop song from a great band. Their song Shout from 1984 ... Is more new wave but superb. Just gave me goosebumps when I heard this as a child in the 80s. A killer song. And my fav.
