Karen considered herself a drummer who sang. There are really good videos on KZbin to react to of her drumming skills. She was forced out from behind the drums to sing out front so the audience could see her, but she had a poor self image and thought she needed to lose weight. She battled anorexia nervosa for many years until she died from heart failure in 1983 at age 32. She is dearly loved and missed still.

She overheard some executives commenting on her weight and getting her from behind the drums so she took that internally and became anorexic. Her mother favored Richard and Karen could never live up to that so struggle was deep and that comment by the people in charge sent her over the edge

A beautiful song by a beautiful lady. Karen Carpenter died in 1983 at the age of 32 from a then little understood eating disorder known as Anorexia Nervosa. Her death brought eating disorders into the public eye, resulting in better Medical understanding and teatment options.

Very nice reaction guys. Karen Carpenter was a rare gem with her seemingly effortless singing ability and perfect pitch, arguably the greatest contralto ever. Add to that her drumming talents and she truly was a unique artist whose voice is immediately recognizable and unmistakable. She was known as "one take Karen" in the recording studio, and her older brother Richard (seen playing keyboards in this video) is an accomplished pianist and arranger. Their actual group name was "Carpenters" but everyone includes "The" before it, and their discography rabbit hole is a deep one. If you want an example of just how impressive Karen's vocal "basement" was (her term for those low notes), check out their cover version of Leon Russell's "A Song For You" (the full 5-minute version) as well as their hit "Only Yesterday". Richard Carpenter said in an interview that his sister's favorite song to perform in concert was "I Need To Be In Love" -- it's a beautiful tune and the lyrics seem to eerily parallel the sad life challenges she faced and attempted to overcome. Love your channel! 👍

Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice. She’s a natural Alto which is rare for a woman. It’s shocked most of the public when she died. It wasn’t public knowledge that she had anorexia. So this vibrant, beautiful young woman suddenly disappeared. I think her death affected a lot of people at the time. She was something beautiful in the world that was suddenly taken away. 😢

Karen and Richard Carpenter brother and sister. The #1 selling american artist in the 70's. I did not know that myself until I researched the Carpenters starting about 5 years ago because in the 70's I followed hard rock. They also had 14 # 1's on the easy listening charts in the 70's which is incredible. There style was completely opposite of rock n roll. Her voice influenced many like Madonna, Shania Twain and many many others. Paul McCartney and Elton John considered her one of the greatest voices of all time. She's completely in a class all her own.

Nice reaction. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. Do you notice her singing draws you in ? She also had a haunting shade in nearly all her songs. Perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because her beautiful voice commands you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, recorded more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Superstar, A Song For You, Merry Christmas Darling, etc. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia.

Such a tragic loss. This brother sister duo were amazing & Karen was an awesome drummer & she sang like an angel. Her battle with anorexia led to heart issues & she died in1983 at the age of 32. Long before "Auto-Tune".... this was strictly Pure... Talent!! A reviewer from Rolling Stone Magazine once said, "Karen's voice is like the sound of a lover whispering in your ear." She even did a song that Marvin Gaye recorded called "Superstar", and when he heard their version, it's reported that he said... "That's her song now."
@raybrown3667
@raybrown3667 9 ай бұрын
Perhaps you're referring to Luther Vandross, who covered "Superstar" a dozen years after the Carpenters did their version in 1971. According to the website Second Hand Songs, there isn't a cover by Marvin Gaye. Recorded versions before the Carpenters include original artist Delaney & Bonnie, Cher, and Rita Coolidge.

Tell me your heart stings aren't immediately pulled when she sings HANG'N AROUND, NOTHING TO DO BUT FROWN, RAINY DAYS AND MONDAY ALWAYS GETS ME DOWN 40 seconds into the song..... The perfect tone and pitch of her voice is unmatched by any singer present or before her. I grew up in the 60's & 70' and I always thought it was a shame and coincidence that her and John Denver never did a duet and died at such a young age. Both were tremendous losses to the world. But as for Karen in this song, it always tugs at my heart stings as soon as she sings HANG'N AROUND ect. Then add that short but super sweet Sax solo and the background voices and you have a GEM of a song?❤❤❤

fun fact: Karen was ranked above John Bonham in a drummer poll. I am copying a clip of an article about it. " And when someone in Zep felt snubbed, he might not let it go so easily. Take the case of drummer John Bonham learning he’d lost to Karen Carpenter in Playboy’s 1975 drummer poll. Bonzo couldn’t wrap his head around that bit of information. Considering Bonham is widely considered the greatest drummer of the past century (read: all-time), you can see why he might feel slighted. On a tour stop in January ’75, Bonham couldn’t get over the poll results - especially the winner."
