The band’s name The HU, is the Mongolian root word for human being. They call their style “Hunnu Rock”…inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongolian empire, known as The Huns in western culture. Some of the band’s lyrics include old Mongolian war cries and poetry. The HU combines Rock Music with traditional Mongolian instrumentation like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp), guttural throat singing and the bombastic bass and drums of rock. All four members have earned Bachelor’s or higher degrees in music and have several years of touring experience throughout Asia and the Pacific Rim.

The 3 stringed instrument (banjo or guitar as you called it) is a Tovshuur (Mongolan Lute), the 2 stringed instruments are Morin Khuur (Horse head fiddle), and yes he mimicked the sound of a horse on the instrument which is a sign of a Master Morin Khuur player. Horses are very big in Mongolian culture and is seen in everything, for example the Morin Khuur. Traditionally the “strings” are made from the tail hairs of a horse, and to bind player and instrument, the hairs must come from the player’s own horse. The “male” (thicker) string has 150 hairs, the female (thinner) string has 130. The instrument is played with a bow in a German style grip, and instead of pushing down on the strings (for different notes) you run your finger under the string and apply pressure to the string. It’s very fascinating.

8:00 It's my understanding that horses are very important in Mongolian culture and this is why there's a horse head on top of the instrument (which is called a morin khuur BTW). The two strings were traditionally made from horse hair, one from a mare and the other from a stallion to represent the balance of male and female. There is also a lot of symbolism in the song itself and I highly recommend that you read the lyrics. Basically it speaks of people in modern day Mongolia ignoring, not honoring and forgetting their cultural heritage.

I know this video is over a year old but the instruments with the 2 "strings" that made the horse sound is called a Morin Khuur (also known as a Horse Head Fiddle). The triangular shaped 3 string is called a Tovshuur (3 string lute). They are both traditional Mongolian instruments. The "whistling" sound is indeed coming from the throat not the lips or sound editing. All the band members are trained in classical Mongolian throat singing. I have got to see them twice now live in concert here in the USA and to me they sound even better live without studio interference. The morin khuur got its name because of the ability of the musicians that play it to mimic the sounds of a horse, and the mongols nomadic nature still to this day and their ties to horses

I can actually do this vocal technique but anyways the lyrics according to Hachapuri (he says it's not the best translation) on youtube: Take it how you want because I've seen multiple translations, some similar, some completely different. I have no idea which one is right. The HU - Yuve Yuve Yu (LYRICS EXPLAINED): kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqLNhauubNushNk&feature=emb_title How strange that you are eating, drinking, partying too much How strange you shout about your Mongol ancestry for no reason How strange that you take an oath while not keeping your words How strange the valuable teachings of our ancestors become worthless? Hey, traitor! Kneel! Hey, let prophecies be declared! /Let the law be passed down/ How strange that you inherited our ancestral fate yet you sleep and won't wake up How strange you keep lying that Mongosl are the best in the world How strange that Mongols, who should live as nobles, fail to be united And how strange you fail to rise up the Mongol nation How strange our forefather's valuable wisdom are considered to be lies Mongols with eternal bright wolf totem are engraved with the mark of sky Chinghis will descent onto the earth and the whole world will remember his name Chorus: Hey, black banner, awaken Hey, royal power, rise forever How strange, how strange (Yuve Yuve Yu, or WTF)

All their songs are a tribute to their ancestors, using ancient Tibetan throat singing. Next time you react to them, you should definitely look for the lyrics! This song starts with modern gamer-warriors, but calls us cushioned kids out for not living up to the honor of the warriors that paved the way. Yuve yuve yu is usually translated as "how strange" 3 times.
