Love this song! This is the original version, sung by Vicki Lawrence in 1972. The song was written by Vicki's then-husband Bobby Russell. She was also great on the Carol Burnett Show.

The Carol Burnett show had a Carol Burnett look alike contest. A fan and viewer of the show, Vicki Lawrence sent in her picture and won. They had her on the show and subsequently hired her as a regular. The rest is, as they say," history.

In Reba's video, you miss a lot of the lyrics because the dialogue is spoken over the song, so I'm not surprised it was like hearing it for the first time.

I prefer Vicki to Rebas cover. It's more mysterious & doesn't give things away with a video & add stuff not mentioned in the song. I remember seeing Vicki performing this on the Carol Burnett Show. Song was written for Cher to sing, but she didn't like it. Vicki did the demo for her husband. When Cher refused, Vicki's husband decided to release the demo of Vicki. It became a hit! A great story song that you must listen to every word!❤

If you like Matlock, try Perry Mason, It's in black and white because it was before color tv. All the talent back then had to act and do their jobs because there wasn't special effects. And Vicki Lawrence is a legend. Watch some Momma's Family. But she's royalty because she was a regular on "The Carol Burnett Show." I'd like to see the so called talents do what they did!!!!!!
