So I believe he was taught the basics. But mastering ? That's a different story.

But same with George. It was the induction of a dead man --beloved George--and a very much -then-alive man, Prince, who prolly felt he had to prove /display his shredding abilities that night on HIS induction into the hall of fame, in front of the hippies and the rock music cognoscenti who dissed him from the start of his 1980s career as being an exhibitionist and pervert. The old hippies had 20 years on him; Prince came out in a bowler hat and pimp suit and shredded his homage to George, as well as displayed WHY he too was in the hall of fame (after WAY TOO LONG), and, in the end, it was the intimacy of watching just him and his axe, like watching Jimi Hendrix in 1968a million years ago.

Prince didn't even get to rehearse the solo with the rest of the band members...the first soloist kept playing all the solos during rehearsal and Prince just strummed along in the background as a result. The producer got pissed off and told Tom Petty to get the other guitarist in line and that they were lucky to have prince willing to rehearse with them., Prince told the producer not to worry about it, he will just play the last solo, and then left rehearsal. So nobody on stage knew what to expect when he started playing. That's one reason Tom Petty kept signaling to prince to continue his solo because--as he said in interviews--he knew something "special" was occurring on stage and didn't want it to stop.

From the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal.

@David-iv6je3 жыл бұрын
Meh. While I think everybody had a good time, especially Dhani, I really don't think shredding like this honors George's memory. George was a guy who valued melody, harmony, and the idea that less is more. That ethos is woven throughout his music. He was the metaphorical antithesis of Prince's shredding, bombastic style. So to do that at an event honoring George always struck me as disrespectful. I would have MUCH rather heard a tasteful solo by Clapton, a friend of George's all the way back to the mid 60s. So I don't get why everybody is gaga over this solo. Just Prince wanking over another tune. He's an exceptional guitarist and also a multi-instrumentalist. He gets my respect for that. But to me this is so, well, Hollywood. So not George. So to me the best part by far is friends of old standing whom George also recorded with swapping verses, chorus and harmonies. Beautiful.

Not dissing you but thats not such a big deal, any musician good enough to make money out of music could pull that off. The song itself is not complicated at all, and these guys know about keeping eye contact on stage so rehearsals arent that crucial.

@@docgonzales Actually that's not true but okay if you want to believe that. Most could keep up but not play on that level and that wasn't even his best by far. Some musicians are just gifted and Prince was one of those. Any real musicians who play on a superior level will tell you Prince was on a different level and a musical genius.
@docgonzales3 жыл бұрын
Chica musically its a very simple song to follow and play along with. I have no idea why you seem to take offence at this, its not diminishing what he came up, which was amazing, but the notion 'he came up with that on the spot' is some freaky musical gift is diminishing , most musicians worth their salt would be able to ad lib over this chord sequence.

Being in Prince’s immediate proximity - I can say from first hand experience - defies adequate words. I had first row industry seats for two shows on Prince’s ‘Musicology’ tour. When the legend came to the edge of the stage during a guitar solo - just steps away from where I sat, he locked me in a gaze for a good 30 seconds… maybe longer (hard to tell - time stood still!). I was mesmerized… owned… seduced… an entranced, willing captive to every ‘other world note’ he played. I can still see AND feel that moment - and his piercing, playful, confident eyes subtly saying, ‘Yeah - I’ve got you - you’re mine now!’ still gives me chills. No matter where anyone was sitting , even in the highest rafters of the arena - I’m SURE everyone left with that same feeling (I mean, you both get it…….. you were left with that very feeling just from this video!). Prince was just that explosive as a performer - and remains unmatched even in his absence. For any artist, THAT is what you should aspire to do and achieve when performing. Make SURE you leave absolutely no doubt that YOU own the room, club, arena - or any stage you’re blessed to play - AND own every single person in it…….. and that the ownership lasts way after the concert is over. (fun Prince fact: the ‘Musicology’ album was his first ‘post label war’ recording and he really wanted to stick it to the suits for all they’d put him through - so rather than sell the album through any traditional outlet, he included the album CD in the price of his concert ticket - so when people entered the venue with their ticket, they were given an album CD. Because attendees ‘paid’ for their ticket, that also meant they ‘paid’ for the CD -- as such, it counted as a sale and could chart on Billboard, etc. plus he kept the revenue because he didn’t have to pay for ‘their’ distribution and promotion -- pure emancipation!!! Pure GENIUS!!!)
