These are the Kennedy Center Awards, where Led Zeppelin was honored. The rainbows are the bows holding the medallion they are awarded as honorees. These Honors are annual awards given to individuals in the performing arts for their lifetime contributions to American culture, first awarded in 1978. The Grateful Dead & Bonnie Raitt were among the 2024 awardees. And the only “dumb question” is the one you don’t ask. ✌️❤️🎶

The three men in the balcony are the surviving members of Led Zepplin. The son of the deceased member is playing the drums. Yes, Robert Plant was crying. This is widely regarded to be the best cover of this song that has ever been done. He was also a bit dumbfounded to find himself at a black tie event with the President of the US and watching the world’s foremost cellist bobbing his head along with the music. Back when this song was released, people did not anticipate the band would ever receive this level of formal acceptance.

These ladies have said in many an interview that Led Zeppelin is a big influence on their music. On the day Elvis died, I saw them, with Rick Derringer opening for them. We found out waiting to go in, someone had a transistor radio, that Elvis passed. Heart closed out their set with "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin and dedicated it to the King. Zeppelin harassed Jason Bonham, John's son, to attend the show with them and he said he couldn't he had a gig. In a longer version as Jason is introduced, Robert was completely surprised.

The broadcast of the Kennedy Center honors usually on CBS is one of my favorite holiday traditions. The annual presentation usually honors five recipients representing all aspects of the arts . The honorees receive a medallion with the rainbow ribbon. (You may notice in some of the audience shots that David Letterman was also honored that year.). Often if it’s a musical artist honored they have other famous musicians singing the honorees songs. The Kennedy Center website has clips of some of these phenomenal performances. When Carole King was honored, Aretha performed Natural Woman, which Carole wrote but of course Aretha made a hit. When Billy Joel was honored, a group of Vietnam Vets joined the stages to help sing Goodnight Saigon. It really is appointment tv for me every year.

John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and the great guitarist Jimmy Page on the right. Lead singer Robert Plant was especially close with John. Jason also played drums with the band after his father's death. Robert Plant invited Jason to join them that evening during this tribute concert. However, Jason said he had a prior engagement. A few tears were shed when Robert saw Jason. That was David Letterman sitting to the left of Jimmy Paige (you can see his ribbon). Jack Black introduced the Led Zeppelin segment, with a video tribute to the band. Foo Fighters performed "Rock and Roll". Kid Rock performed "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", and "Ramble On". Then Lenny Kravitz did a great version of "Whole Lotta Love". John Bonham was the drummer for Led Zeppelin. When he passed away the band tried but was unable to go on, it was just too painful for each of them. The person on drums is Jason, John Bonham's son. Yes the guys in the audience are the other three members of Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. John Bonham usually wore a Bowler Hat like the one his son is wearing and also the members of the choir. Jason is playing on his father's drum set. Thos e ribbons are their awards that they were honored with on this night. You are thinking of the Pink Floyd album cover with the prism. Yes, you are correct, the mix is off when the choir comes in. They let it drown out Ann's voice and I think that was a real mistake because she is so powerful and doing such a great job on this song. Robert Plant is very emotional throughout this song. Watching Robert Plant get teary eyed shows you the reach of music. Add to it that Jason Bonham (on drums) and son of Zeppelin drummer John Bonham who passed away years ago is emotional. The hat being word by his son and those in the background is a style of hat John wore all of the time. They were being honored at The Kennedy Center. Their drummer (John Bonham) had passed away, and his son (Jason Bonham) was playing the drums in the bowler hat like his dad wore. They had asked Jason to join them at the honors to represent his dad with them. He told he couldn’t because he had a gig that weekend. The gig was performing for them, and if you watch the entire show, you see him coming out on stage and pointing at them like saying ‘gotcha.’ Hope I articulated that ok. I highly recommend watching the entire show honoring them. It will make more sense. 😊

The rainbow was the ribbon holding their medal they received for being honored.

You got the gist except the prism/rainbow is Pink Floyd. The ribbons are actually holding a medallion given to all Kennedy Center honorees. It's high honor & annual tribute reserved for artists who have achieved excellence and left a legacy impact on American culture. The drummer is Jason Bonham. His dad John was Zeppelin's drummer and best friend of Robert Plant. John died young leading to the breakup of LZ. Jason was only about 4 when his dad died but Plant has always continued to be involved in his life as a friend & mentor. He had invited Jason to attend this occasion, but Jason made an excuse to decline, knowing he would be performing as a surprise guest in a direct nod to the band and in personal tribute to his father. His unexpected appearance clearly had an effect on them, but touched Robert Plant especially. Heart did a fantastic job with Stairway, and it was so awesome to see the Obamas rocking out to Zeppelin! That you could hear Ann at all over a full orchestra and 2 choirs, is a credit to her vocal projection. I can't imagine performing this, their most well-known signature masterpiece, live in front of the geniuses who wrote it. Riffing Page's guitar solo while Page is in the audience!?! Wow, that took guts!

The ribbon has the medallion award on it. This is how the award is always presented. This is The Kennedy Center Honors award ceremony. Led Zep is being honored and various artists perform some of theirbsongs. This is Hearts homage to Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven". The drummer on this is the son of John Bonham who was the drummer for Led Zep. who died some years ago. **The funny thing about this is that Robert Plant had invited Bonhams son to come with him to this event but he declined saying he had a gig. This was the gig he had. That's why when Heart came out with Johns son, Plant pointed at him and he pointed back. The derby's that the son and choir wore were in honor of John, who wore one. For more Kennedy Center Honors great videos honoring artists I recommend these: Aretha Franklin ( singing " A Natural Woman") honoring Carol King.who write the song. and Beyonce ( singing "Proud Mary" ) honoring Tina Turner The president always attends this event. I can't tell you when this event started without looking it up myself.

Jason Bonham (on drums) is the son of Led Zep's drummer John Bonham who died. This is the ceremony honoring Led Zep, so yes, the dudes with the rainbow sashes and medals are the 3 remaining members. John and Robert Plant were really close-Jason is Robert's godson.

Heart was very heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin and they covered Zeppelins Rock and Roll on their third album IIRC. This was the Kennedy Center Awards honoring, seated left to right as they pan, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and the late John Bonham. The drummer is Jason Bonham, John's son. The rainbow ribbons with the thingy on them is an award from the Kennedy Center For The Arts, one of the highest awards an artist can receive.

Yes, in spite of the fact that this is an amazing, powerful performance, other people have wished Ann Wilson's vocals weren't almost drowned out there at the end. Legendary and emotional performance though.
