The only time I ran into Swedes while in the US Army was in Bosnia back in 2004-05. The Swedish military had a ground unit that maintained their trucks and their shop burned to the ground right after we, USA, had turned over the control of the base to the EU and Finland was the command. Nobody offered them any help except us and we were the only aviation on the base for the US that was left behind for Special Ops things. We gave them one of our aircraft hangers and all the tools that we could scrounge up since most of our forces had left and we had plenty of tools for vehicle maintenance still there. We were down to 6 aircraft (Black Hawks and Apaches) so we squeezed them into 2 hangars so they had the other one. They were great guys and we taught them about American football and had lots of good times on the holidays together, not to mention the not so legal Black Hawk rides we gave them! Most of the Swedes had never met an American before and had assumed that we were arrogent A-holes.. somewhat true, but we are the first ones to step up and help when it is needed!

Ok, american can openner goes on the list! For Thanksgiving the wife and I had Turkey with raisin stuffing, greenbean casserole and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Simple meal for two people, and the leftovers have given us full meals for 5 days, last day only lacking the GBC, so making mashed potatos for the side. Peace. By the way, we sometimes eat brussel sprouts fresh and cold, and in the winter, sometimes when still partially frozen. Its all relative, but both brussel sprouts, and asparagus are better with bacon! Heck, shoes are better with bacon!!😂

Thanksgiving menu: Roasted turkey, baked ham, cornbread dressing, deviled eggs, green bean casserole. mashed potatoes, Mexican street corn, broccoli cheese casserole, cranberry sauce, giblet gravy, mac and cheese, homemade yeast rolls. Deserts were chocolate silk pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, German chocolate cake, Blackberry jam nut cake and banana pudding. There were 57 people for dinner. After the meal the people not involved in the food prep did the clean up and dishes. We then sat down and played gin, canasta, poker, and jinga. Couple hours after the meal we had desert and coffee. We had our thanksgiving on Saturday. We always go and volunteer in the soup kitchens to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving day. We basically will do this all again on Christmas.

You guys re precious! You offend no one by making food substitutions! Thanks giving was many different things based on availability to the pilgrims. They were thankful for the bounty of the harvest, and the native Americans thought them how to grow their own food and work the land. They gave thanks for all of their blessings. Food surpasses cultural boundaries, and traditional foods. We all do the best with what is available in our regions, and seasons, adapt it to our tastes. The most wonderful thing we can do is share our traditions, and flavor we each develope with sometimes even the same foods adjusted to our own taste! What you guys prepared was a wonderful variety of the foods you are thankful for! You’ve done a wonderful job at fusing your traditional holiday dessert (Fika) with things your American friends have shared with you. That is the spirit of Thanksgiving! Love to you both from Columbus Ohio, looking forward to your next adventure! Thanks for including us and sharing! 💜🥰☮️

Great cooking show. The first Thanksgiving was a 3 day feast sometime between September and mid November in 1621 and was considered a harvest celebration between the Colonists and the local Native Indians. It was made a legal American holiday around 1870. Most cultures have some kind of Harvest Celebration for giving thanks for the harvest of crops and abundance to get them through the winter. Have a wonderful day.

I don't make my cornbread casserole from scratch, never have. I make it with the same ingredients that you are using, except I mix my shredded cheese into the batter, I don't put it on top. It's one of my favorite sides for holiday meals! Your Thanksgiving meal looked perfect! I would have been thrilled with this exact meal! Great job! Also, have to add, if you want to make a spicy version you can add a can of diced jalapenos to make Mexican Cornbread, also amazing!!! As for Glogg, I have seen this made on Cecilia Blomdahl's videos, but would love to see the Recky and Carol version! Would also love to see you make some of your holiday dishes/drinks over the holiday season! Love you guys and am very grateful for you both!

I did not know that St. Lucy was so celebrated in Sweden. My ancestry is Sicilian and Santa Lucia was born in Siracusa, Sicily. Santa Lucia saved the people of Siracusa from a famine by miraculously sending them ships loaded with wheat. To honor her on December 13, we eat Cuccia, a porridge made from cooked wheat berries. I love my Cuccia but your Lussekatt and Pepparkaka look delicious. This year I am going to include ginger cookie in my Santa Lucia celebration.

That looks soooo good and I'm hungry now! We had too much food as usual. Turkey, Ham, Tamales (Texas thing), Cornbread dressing with giblet gravy, broccoli rice and cheese casserole, potato casserole, sweet potatoes, green beans, roasted brussel sprouts with bacon with a splash of balsamic vinegar , Mac and Cheese, fried okra, deviled eggs, rolls and cornbread. Then Pumpkin, Pecan, Chocolate and Key lime pies. Cherry and Peach cobblers. There was 12 people in our party so we had tons of leftovers for everyone to take home. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday as it's a time for family and friends to share a meal and give thanks for our blessings.

Hi from another Carol!! The corn casserole brought back warm memories of my mom, who always made it for family gatherings. I lost her almost 4 years ago and have not had it since the fall before she passed. I had a few foods I didn't like as a child, but was raised if it was on the table, you had to eat some of it. I have since grown into loving all those foods I hated except liver! Today, your not a cooking show, with the laughter and spills, was just like my kitchen! Thankful this year in gaining a new son in law and all of us having continued good health and happiness. Glad to see you enjoying and embracing what we have here to offer you, it sheds a new light on what we do have.

My former neighbor, Marta, was born in Sweden. I loved Christmas for many reasons when she was my neighbor, but one was because she gave us so many delicious Sweden baked treats and Christmas ornaments, etc s. I was so sad when her family moved to Texas. Her husband was from Poland and his mother gifted us with delicious Polished food when she came to visit, we reciprocated with good southern cuisine and traditions. Loved watching this today. Corn casserole, corn pudding and corn soufflé are so delicious! We had ham along with smoked turkey for Thanksgiving. Sweet potato casserole, green beans, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, homemade rolls, cranberry sauce, gravy, olives, and pickles. For dessert we had apple pie, cheese cake, chocolate pie, chocolate marble cake, ice cream, and for me Gluten Free crème brûlée. yum❤ Happy Thanksgiving all year long. Thankful for the happiness y’all bring to us. Thankful for life, love, family, freedom and my God.❤️🙏

Corn casserole is one of my favorites!! Thanksgiving this year was at my brother’s home. He roasted a turkey and I brought a ham. We had mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn casserole, green bean casserole, oyster stuffing, turkey gravy and pineapple gravy (for the ham), homemade potato rolls, homemade wild rice buns, deviled eggs, chocolate brownies, Watergate Salad, pecan pie, apple pie and pumpkin pie. It was our first Thanksgiving that our mom was not there (she passed last March) so it was nice to have our families together to enjoy our time together and also remember Thanksgivings past with lots of love.

I have fried the whole corn in a skillet with butter too. I don't like cornbread but love hush puppies. Our thanksgiving was as follows. Turkey breast Ham Mashed potatoes with gravy Cauliflower & broccoli with cheese sauce Green beans Dinner rolls Pies Pumpkin Apple Apple caramel Pecan Whipped topping Just do it your way and ignore the comments. Carol, You probably don’t remember me, but I gave you the recipe for corn casserole some time ago. Unfortunately, you weren’t able to try it because you can’t get cream corn in Sweden. Unfortunately, I’m not able to enable you due to a low fixed income so I sent instructions for making it from whole corn. I understand that this didn’t work for you so I’m thrilled that someone was able to send you all the ingredients. I never tried putting cheese on top, but it sounds delicious so the next time I make the casserole, I’ll add that step! I’m looking forward to seeing what you and Recky think of the finished product.

Do you know “Succotash” ? The English word comes from a Native American language (Narragansett, Rhode Island area). It is a cooked dish of kernels of corn mixed with shell beans, especially lima beans, and, often, with green and sweet red peppers. I knew it (Midwest) as Kernel Corn with Lima Beans, BUT Southern USA makes it with: Fresh corn, tomatoes, lima beans, and okra (summer vegetables).

This year we had the basics: turkey, gravy, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, rolls, green bean casserole, pecan pie, 7 Up cake, and chocolate peanut butter pie. It was delicious, and we were so lucky to spend Thanksgiving with family. I do remember as a child my grandmother would cook for a huge number of family and friends. In addition to everything we had, she would also cook a ham, potato salad, pinto beans, corn, green beans, deviled eggs, cranberry, mixed salad, jello salad, and chocolate pie. Family would drive from all over to spend Thanksgiving together. Once in my 20’s, I cooked a complete diner as my grandmother did, and it was exhausting. It seems as our elder generation passes away, our group gets smaller.

Lussekatt! We had a Sami lady in our powwow crafts group. She made St Lucia buns for us. They were so good.

I admire you so much that you are so adventurous to try so many different food and recipes. And I like when you include something you make that you usually have. It’s nice to see when it all comes together.

Hi Ricky and Carol, We have turkey, gravy, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry sauce, & dinner rolls. It's traditional to have pumpkin pie but we don't care for it so our pies are apple and cherry. Not a Cooking Channel is one of my favorite cooking channels. I don't know that I would do as good as you if I tried cooking some traditional Swedish dishes.

Thanksgiving takes a lot of time to plan. We often pre-bake everything we can ahead of time. That way, we only need to reheat on Thanksgiving Day. So... Thanksgiving can take up to a week to prepare. This year, we went small. Sweet potatoes with chipotle in adobo sauce, potatoe casserole, cornbread stuffing/dressing, turkey breast, and a salad. Oh, and my son's favorite, chocolate pie. We are still eating the leftovers . And probably will for a couple more days. 😅

North America is the continent of corn! Both the US and Canada's largest crop. I make creamed corn all the time. I use canned or frozen corn but fresh is best. Just cook the corn in plenty of butter, add salt and pepper to taste, a small amount of sugar, and 237 ml milk (or cream) to make a thick soup. Make a cornstarch slurry and thicken. We do love our corn.

Thank you for showing the Lussekatter! A Swedish friend made some for me once, and she said there is a joke where people say "if you're going to rob a grocery store, take the saffron!". I need to try to make it again myself... Love to you both.

Ahhhh, your first Swedish/American Thanksgiving meal was beautiful, and i was so happy to see that everything you made was enjoyed by you both. May be you saved a bit of the corn casserole for your folks to experience. It would be great to hear of their reaction to it if you did. 😊 Again, beautiful meal but i was surprised to not see the lingonberry out in a bowel to add to the ham and potatoes, maybe?? 🤔😊😊😊 Stay well our friends and stay safe too. Happy Holidays and a ho, ho, ho! 🎅

Amazing job on your version of a Thanksgiving meal. While there are some foods or dishes which might be considered 'staples,' it's really about making whatever appeals to you. When you look like you want to do a face plant onto your plate, it's clear everything was a success. Hopefully one of your enablers (for a long time I thought you were saying 'neighbors') can send plenty of cans of creamed corn along with boxes of Jiffy mix so you can whip up that dish whenever you're in the mood. For Carol, sounds like that might be quite often. Looks like you made enough for a couple more meals. Enjoy! 😊 CaRe Crew

Something I'm grateful for is watching Recky throw Carol into the BEST fit of laughter ever! What a great way to start a Thanksgiving video, HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!! Man, what a good looking plate! My mouth is still watering. You had meat & 3 sides, so why are you apologizing for a small meal? Carol, TBH, I don't imagine anyone was thinking that when we caught a glimpse of those delectable plates! And I think you really caught the spirit of the holiday. Sharing an adventurous holiday drink was romantic. Thanksgiving is all about counting your blessings & giving thanks to God for those blessings. Like you said, it should be a worldwide thing. It really can be beautiful when you take stock, reflecting on the miracles both grand & mundane that comprise America's story & your life story too.

For next level Brussel sprouts: Add a shot of bourbon and two tablespoons of honey OR two tablespoons of real maple syrup to your bacon grease. Mix well and coat your brussel sprouts. Put brussel sprouts on a cooking sheet and sprinkle your bacon over top. Roast in oven for 25-30min on 375•. So yummy and takes those brussel sprouts up a notch!!
