First Time Using Gas In My Campervan

I just bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland. In 2011, I moved from Scotland to the Middle East and have lived and worked overseas pretty much ever since then. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in my home country Scotland and I’ve never even visited places like the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye or the NC500.
I am a huge fan of campervan travel and alternative living, having spent over 600 nights living in vans, it’s my favourite way to travel due to the incredible freedom, adventure and the affordability. In this video, I try cooking my first vanlife meal using the gas stove. It’s my first time using gas in a campervan kitchen so I’m a bit anxious!
My campervan is a 2001 Toyota Hiace high roof van. It was originally used by the Royal Mail and then purchased by the previous owner and self-converted into a DIY campervan. In my opinion this is the perfect size for a camper van since it’s possible to stand up inside but it can also fit into regular parking spaces.
Although the van is already converted, in order for it to be an off-grid living van, it requires some campervan DIY, especially when it comes to electrics and plumbing. Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing more about this van, any DIY I do, and most importantly sharing my road trip adventures as I finally get to travel my beautiful home country of…. SCOTLAND!

There is a little air plug on top of the filler cap that you pull out to allow air into the bottle. Plus when it comes to emptying your grey water, if you just tip it forward to empty it will glug out. So you tip all drums out side ways to allow air into the drum, this will stop any glugging & allow a smooth flow.

We always had gas on my parents boats and it was absolutely great for cooking! I find it the best for cooking! I have had to get used to an induction hob and liking that too! But gas is the best frankly when it comes to cooking but I am now finding that induction is really great too!

You are so precious. I guess gas cooking in houses is not common in Scotland? We use a lot of gas in Texas because we have a lot. There is a gas field less than a mile from my house. Hope you are having wonderful adventures.

Such fun Ruth! I was going to add, but someone already has & I noticed when trying to fill the kettle with water the tiny grey plug on top of the blue filler cap to let air in. I was going to suggest loosening the filler cap to let air in. Maybe a future project could be to install a small microwave?

Hi Ruth, Looking at the underside of your gas hob it appears to have piezo electronic ignition, which is the small black button next to the gas control knobs for the burners. This should produce a spark for each burner that will save you having to use the gas lighter. It could be broken of course, but usually it’s just the small electrodes next to the burners that need a clean to remove dirt & grease. You should be able to see the small spark when clicking the black button. Give this a try!

Hi Ruth. Have tried leaving a comment a few times but it wouldn’t work….so will try one last time. Nice to see the progression. No expert, but for peace of mind a Carbon Monoxide alarm from the likes of Screwfix would be £17 well spent. I believe a gas alarm is also available for the gas cupboard, if hasn’t a floor vent, in case you did get a gas leak and gas is heavier than air. When touring I would recommend trip all around Loch Awe with its many man made ancient islands, castles and atmospheric graveyard, with some only accessible by water. (If over in the area with our boat at the time we would gladly take you around to explore. Just let us know) St Conans Kirk and Cruachan Dam and visitor centre worth a look if the weathers playing up! A Midge net for all your vans doors, windows and openings a must….I think the little ***ts are getting worse year on year! Don’t need to spend a fortune on custom made jobs, home bargains/Amazon sell magnetic or Velcro stick on ones for house doors that can be adapted. Or buy a large bed mosquito net and make your own if you are handy with an old singer sowing machine. Anyway look forward to following your travels to perhaps give us a few more ideas too, and you WILL thank me for that last piece of advice in the future…..I’ve still got the scars😊

You need to loosen the water bottle lid so that air can get in to replace the water that is coming out. At 5:00 you can see bubbles rising in the water, so the bottom tap is clearly the only entry route for air at the moment. 🙂

ルースさんお元気そうで何よりです。日本ではガスボンベは通常LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas)が使用されています。ちなみに一般的な都市ガスはLNG(Liquefied Natural Gas)を使用。

People seem to be overly cautious about gas but if you can hear or smell gas do not light a lighter or activate anything that might spark and fix the joint you hear the gas coming from, if you can't hear or smell gas but unsure if everything is sealed correctly then just light a lighter and put it up against all joints, if a flame then ignites at a joint or wherever, simply blow it out, if it's a bit big to be able to blow out then use a wet cloth, then reseal that joint. This is how I grew up seeing british gas do checks for gas leaks and is what I have always done if unsure if there is a leak, even if i know there is a leak due to smell I simply vent the area to get the build up of gas out then do the lighter test. As long as there is not a build up of gas (smell) or it's not gushing out (sound) your safe to do the check

I tend to use the communal washing up places if we're on camp sites, you get to hear the gossip - things where orcas had been spotted on Shetland, where to definitely find the puffins on Westray (Orkney) and a local quiz night in Galloway.

Hey Ruth, you don’t need the lighter as your stove has ignition. You just have to turn the gas and press the infinitos the sparkle from it will turn on the flame. I have the same model and I am not hooked up to 12 V

If you do not remove the lid of the air hole at the top of the water tank, the water will not come out vigorously.

Hi, Ruth! You've finally started cooking in the car, and although you've already experienced it, eating outdoors is special. I don't know how long you'll be cooking in the future, but if you want to save gas, you can save money by turning off the heat at an appropriate time, closing the lid, and steaming. Please cook me a delicious meal.

Your gas installation is very unsafe. Gas pipe poorly clipped with cable clips not designed to clip pipe. Solder elbow joint looks poorly done. Always reduce number of joints in gas installation. A bent pipe there is much better. Gas hose to gas cylinder is too strained. Hose should be longer. There appears to be no vent in floor of gas locker for gas to drain safely out. Unsafe to store such a large bottle inside your living space. You should fit gas locker that is sealed from living space and only accessible from outside and having gas drains in floor. Recommend you get your gas installation checked by a more professional competent person, one that has experience with campers and caravans.
