I broke my ankle on September 9th of this year. In two days I will have 2 weeks post surgery. I feel mentally exhausted and very sad. I feel so alone and I know I need to be strong but it's incredibly challenging and thinking about walking is so hard to imagine at the moment :(

I’m sorry to hear that Nancy. You are not alone! I just went through this and like the others comments you can get through it. The biggest thing for me in the beginning was to attach my recovery to my “why”. Reshaping your mindset is as important as the pt. I.e. Why do I want to get better? Instead of why did this happen to me was a huge shift for me. I’m 2.5 years from this injury and just getting back to the things I love.

Amazing how majority of the comments have a story on an ankle injury, helps to know you are not alone and will never be alone. I’m here to join and say I have too. May 19th, I suffered a Trimalleolar Fracture. Did the surgery, cast removal , stitch removal, and currently doing the 6 weeks of non-weight bearing and next appointment on the road to rehabilitate to walk . Extremely nervous 😮‍💨😮‍💨

Honestly it's been a blessing. The ability to connect with others who are going through the same stuff is one good thing about the internet! How has your pain levels been?? are you still on blood thinners?
@chelseaparker7562
@chelseaparker7562 Ай бұрын
@@TheHealthyYinzer Absolutely! As for pain levels , my most painful moments were day 2 and 3 after surgery , all I did was cry , because the primary medication (oxycodone) felt like it wasn’t working. I think by the second to third week from surgery , I was feeling alright and stopped the meds I also stop taking the blood thinners like up until the day they took my cast off to remove the stitches. Before I was taking it whenever I felt and notice my foot/toes were swelling up. if I seen/felt my toes were super tight and I couldn’t move them , I took the blood thinners and they brought that swelling down good , I was moving my toes like nothing was wrong. But as of now, I take nothing. I also had moments couple days after the surgery where my foot would just randomly jump, like a muscle spasm , but I didn’t get the meds for it until the day of my stitch removal and don’t even need it because the spasm’s stopped right after the cast came off.

For me while I was non weight bearing and on complete bed rest it was the best time for me to reflect on my life and be thankful for the blessings which I have and I took them for granted. Oh, I see you're still in the early stages of recovery. This can be mentally draining. The video you watched was from two years ago, and I do my best to assist others through comments. I personally went through an eight-week program and found it very helpful. As an exercise physiologist, I knew what I needed to do, but it was beneficial to have someone else create the program for me. It's important to focus on extending your big toe when starting physical therapy. You may not think about it, but it's a crucial step in regaining normal walking ability.

I suffered a trimalleolar fracture slipping off the last stair on March 23rd. Had surgery March 31st and transitioned from the temporary soft cast into a fibreglass one on April 18th. I won't see the surgeon again until May 27th for a review. I'm only 5 weeks in to the first 9 weeks of my journey. Those who have gotten past this, I commend you! I'm suffering more from the mental inconvenience than I am the pain and I hate it!!! I want my foot back! 😭🤬 T

Please be careful. The crutches must rest over the side of your chest, a measurement of up to 3 fingers straight from your armpit line to the side of your chest. Otherwise you will end up with a Crutch palsy which is compression of your axillary nerve lying underneath your armpit. I am a certified physiotherapist so hope this helps.

@TheHealthyYinzer Thank you for asking. It has been a long ride for me. The doctor told me it was going to be a long and hard recovery.And I didn't really realize how long and how hard it was going to be. I'm 75 years old, and I've been dealing with this foot for several years. So my balance wasn't good. And finally, it got to the point that I couldn't do any fun stuff anymore. I got an infection in my incision about almost to my 8th week. So that set me back.The doctor felt like it was because the boot that he had put me in was rubbing on the incision so I had to get out of that. Go on an antibiotic and use another kind of a shoe which reminded me of a platypus. I am now able to be off a knee scooter, walker, and just using a cane or my walking sticks. When I go to a big store, I sometimes do use their scooters that they have. I am now able to drive, which makes me so happy. I have occupational therapy come to the house, and I have PT also coming. July 21st will be 4 weeks.

@@cakeonice09 Oh my I’m sorry to hear that I had fractured my tibia too but at the worst part 🙁 pretty much for me I ended up fracturing it at the end not only did I fracture I only fractured some cartlidage which means I got a higher chance of arthritis. I had physical therapy yesterday but for some reason now I gotta do it till January 5th. I wish I had just broken my fibula that thing healed up already and the scar has healed up long ago

@@bbqsauce2865 that was what my doctor said about my fracture that how bad it was. He said that I can develop arthritis. I have anemia so it took so long to get surgery because I had to get iron infusions.

Move the INJURED LEG with the crutches as explained by KZbin channel THERAPEUTICASSOCIATES , the video is called “Walking with crutches, partial-weight bearing” I am still on a knee scooter and waiting for an MRI on the 24th. Broken ankle….

I’ll be 10 weeks and in just a few days. My doctor told me to slowly transition from 25% weight bearing to full weight bearing at my own pace. Today (day 11 of weight bearing) was my 1st day with no crutches and almost no pain! I’m scared to try it without my boot though. It’s definitely a long physical AND mental journey!

When they cleared me for weight bearing... i went full weight (not knowing it was supposed to be a gradual thing) i will say my legs and hips regretted it for a few weeks. Just make sure you streghten the muscles in the injured leg. thats really the best thing you can do. I have a few videos on the exercises that helped me get through it

I remember when I broke my ankle from falling down from a high drop, thing is I almost had my whole bottom part of my leg amputated, extremely lucky not to have it amputated, but the impact from the fall did make one leg slightly shorter than the other. We planned on having surgery, something about the growth plate on my left leg or something

@@TheHealthyYinzer Sadly no, it's been a few years and I haven't been able to get the surgery, mainly because of complications with money and transportation. Which sucks because the slight height difference is being me pain in my hip and my shins, because of the extra pressure put on one leg

I fractured my medial tibia malleolis. I ended up getting the least invasive/least hardware of the 3 options that it could've broken with. And the pain was insane. I can't imagine getting plated and rods and half a dozen screws. I got 2 screws and hated my freaking life for at least 10 days

I had a dislocated trimalleolar fracture with a comminuted fibula fracture on November 9th. I’m nonweightbearing for at least another 7 weeks. Do you have any advice for getting through this?
@TheHealthyYinzer
@TheHealthyYinzer 8 ай бұрын
Sounds like what I am going through. First, you need to attach your recovery to your why. For me it was getting back to my business and being able to help my clients. Once I had the why in my mind I would look at everyday as a chance to get better in something. If this is mobility, strength, flexibility. You will lose muscle mass and that will cause some pain and depression. But just keep your why front of mind. Once you are able to do the mobility exercises START ASAP! Everyday is a chance to get better and come back to the things you love. I’m always here if you need anything

@@TheHealthyYinzerHey bro, thank you. No, didnt get the external fixator, just bandages for the stitches. Got told to start exercising the foot from day 2 after the operation, just by moving the foot up and down (sideways only after 6-8 weeks) and exercise for toes. Seems to be much better now, 11 days after surgery, but my leg already seems to be much skinnier then other one. Cant imagine how will i start walking in 8 weeks 😅. How is your foot, is it fully recovered? Have a good day bro 😎
