I originally thought that the show was an anime at first as well. Turns out that this was deliberate on the part of the show creators. The animation was actually done in Korea, which added to the anime look & feel of the series. Many people refer to the series as being "Amerime", for American animation done in the anime style.

Ximien Lum He had his mom ripped away from him because of bending and his dad was ripped away from him because of war. Both being the fire nations fault. He had to grow up fast to be able to protect his village. Anyone in his situation would be weary of any outsiders and bending in general. By the ending, he has one of the best character developments in the entire show.

The show isn't technically an anime, but it does take a lot of visual and thematic inspiration from other anime productions, including a lot of Studio Ghibli's work. The first couple of episodes are pretty good, but the show goes on to become a genuinely great one about midway through the first season, so the fact you're already really into the show is a very good sign!

This show is widely considered to be Nickelodeon's magnum opus and in my opinion, quite rightfully so. It's an American cartoon though it was heavily influenced by anime and the show was actually animated in Korea. It explores a lot of Eastern Asian philosophy and culture.

It's the best series Nickelodeon has ever produced... but it's not it's magnum opus. Because the show doesn't really fit or define what Nickelodeon is like. Spongebob fits more to that role as Nick's Magnum Opus.

A magnum opus essentially means the best work an artist/organisation etc. has ever produced. I see your point but I still stand by the "Avatar" group. For what it's worth, a lot of U.S. cartoons are animated over seas. I know that quite a few recent Disney cartoons were animated in Korea as well. The big difference is the art style that the storyboarists use... and how much they pay the animation studio.

eviljbrian Viacom doesn’t care about fair use. I have seen it many times. They are ruthless. Also, as viewers I think we would all like to see the “max” 10 mins of reaction per episode. To be fair, Sokka's "sexism" isn't just looking down on women. He thinks both sexes have their roles and things at wich they're good at. He takes protecting the whole tribe on his own against a warship full of firebenders very serious and doesn't hesitate once. Katara's waterbending wasn't of any help (how would it be, she can barely create a bouble right now). Luckily the show does a very good job setting this straight in episode 4 already. now some spoilery stuff: How else would it be. His own sister is one of the most powerfull fighters he will ever know, so his view on gender roles HAD to be crushed eventually. Maybe he already senses that and that's why he doesn't like her bending. It directly implies that she is much more powerfull than him from the start. He thinks it's his role to protect her, but her being so much more powerfull means for him being too weak. Which he actually is. He's got other qualities. Man I'm already hyped for season 3, "Sokka's Master".

oh damn, I come back from work and Mary has dropped gems in my notification! I liked this show okay when it came out, as an adult I LOVE it. You are going to love this series, I have been visiting my mom on weekends and watching this show with her about to wrap up s3. I was thinking that my affection for the show was nostalgia, but she is just as into it as I am now. This show just has a great message and feel to it, plus the bending in s2 and s3 might be the coolest style of magic/combat that i've ever seen.

Just to let you know, this series is made in America for the most part, though the animation is handled through MIR Animation Studios in Seoul, Korea. Each of the bending elements movements are based on authentic Chinese martial arts. Fire is Northern Shaolin, Earth is Hungar, Water is Tai Chi, and air is bagua. Also each individual bender has their own particular style. Each of the cultures in the series are based on historic culture as well, the Fire Nation is based on feudal Japan, the Earth Kingdom is ancient China, Air Nomads were Tibetan monks, and the Water Tribes on Inuit.

It’s regarded as not only Nickelodeon’s best production, but one of the best cartoons ever made. Fun Fact: These two episodes, along with others throughout Season 1, were directed by Dave Filoni, who was the supervising director for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He later became the head of animation at Lucasfilm, holding the title of director, supervising director, and executive producer of other Star Wars shows, including The Mandalorian. Most fans think of him as the successor to George Lucas himself, and reasonably so.

I guess what's not immediately obvious in the first 2 episodes is that Sokka is THE man of the tribe. All other men are gone, and his father is the chieftain of the Southern Water Tribe, making him sort of vaguely the leader in his absence. And he's the ONLY warrior left to protect the whole village. They're HIS responsibility. He takes it EXTREMELY seriously, and is super brave, despite not necessarily being the smartest, so he doesn't take kindly to anyone or anything that could potentially endanger his people.

The main thing I can say about this is to pay very close attention to every episode. There are details all over that are very important to the story, and tons and tons of little things that are just super-neat when you realize how carefully they were planned out. Also, watch the animation closely. You'll notice that, unlike the vast majority of anime, A:TLA's animation involves a LOT of dynamic movement. There's always something happening on screen. While anime series like Naruto and DBZ have a lot of shots where it's just the still shot of a character's face with the lips flapping, here, they're always moving, always very dynamic, organic, and alive, even if it's just clothes and hair moving in the wind. The care and attention to detail in this series is phenomenal. And the amount of characterization and emotion is better than any three other shows, cartoon and live-action alike. Even the so-called "filler" episodes have more plot and action than all but the best found elsewhere. These two episodes are just the tip of the iceberg, if you'll excuse the pun. You're in for a crazy ride, and you'll love every minute of it.

technically atla (avatar the last airbender) isnt an anime but the creators, micheal and bryan are huge anime fans and took a lot of inspiration from japanese animated cartoons and added some anime facial expressions and comedy. also, fun fact is that the entire avatar universe is heavily based off of and inspired by asian culture. water tribes in the north and south pole are based on Inuit Tribes, the airbenders are based off of the Shaolin Munks, the earth kingdom is based off of China, and the fire nation is largely Imperial Japan however there are some people from other asian ethnicities in the fire nation.

G'Day One of the best things about Avatar is: The show's creators based each Bending style on a style of real-world martial art, leading to visual differences in the techniques used by Waterbenders (tai chi chuan), Earthbenders (Hung Ga kung fu, for the most part), Firebenders (Northern Shaolin kung fu) and Airbenders (baguazhang). Maybe check out small samples of these styles and when you watch the show the bending will have more context cause it's done by Americans and not an Eastern company

I think there are a few episodes that would want there own 10 minute reaction. the later into the show you get you are going to need to cut a ton of important things if you try to condense 2 episodes into 10 minutes. I dont want to tell you how to do your business but I'm only suggesting in terms of viewing experience. unless the videos are 20 minutes long. only a suggestion I know you need to avoid copyright strikes as well, and I understand that, but I have seen other channels workarounds on that, like uploading to vimeo with a link, I know thats more work and what not but just making suggestions.

American made, anime inspired. Also the martial arts moves we're choreographed by a real martial arts master, filmed, and then sent to the animation team. Every move in this show is based on real world martial arts, and the next style I'm learning is Earth bending.
