Season 1 episode 1-17 is like a kids show, then the rest of it is not.

It uses a technique similar to what they did with Harry Potter(books and movies both), although not as pronounced since it’s only 3 seasons. They both understood that the audience of children looking at the first season/movie/book would be getting older with each release and might be craving more mature/complicated stories. So rather then risk losing those fans who might think they were too old now for a kids show/movie/book, the content grows up with them. Not that adults can’t still enjoy the early works like Avatar’s first season, but kids in their rush to grow up tend to worry more about what others might think if they knew they enjoyed something aimed at kids younger then themselves.

I love seeing when people react to Avatar and always start with the sentence "If this show is good" and then they end up falling in love with it heart and soul. Avatar is the best show ever. Btw you haven't even seen Katara's power level yet. And I guarantee you will fall in love with Uncle Iroh before long. Avatar is just awesome.

If you love this show, and after you’ve wrapped the prequel trilogy(Star Wars), I highly recommend the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series (2008-21). One of this show’s Directors (a few episodes), Dave Filoni is partially responsible for TCW and now producer/director of the new Star Wars series that have and are slated to release (I.e The Mandalorian)

I'm glad you're liking this already. I saw it for the first time last year, and I was just as hyped. What's really awesome about this vs other anime is it isn't dubbed. It's an entirely western creation made in the form of anime, but not being recorded in Japanese first. Which means, no weird translations, no weird lip syncing, no cultural confusions, etc.

My guy, it might be true that you missed this one growing up. But you should 100% be really glad you're watching it as an adult for the first watch. You'll be able to pick out the darker and deeper meanings throughout a lot of the show in a way you as a child couldn't ever do. So not only do you get to enjoy the childish cartoon-iness, but you'll also get to enjoy just how mature and deep the show gets at the same time.
