Might do that to refresh my memory because some fan edits have brought up good points from previous seasons that I had forgotten about :) Upon thinking about it further, I can really see why casual viewers would think they moved really fast. Anthony basically was an entirely new character in S2 so it was a fresh start. As was queen Charlotte. Polin were around s1-2 as side characters so it's easy to forget about their progression.

@@mariazamora6824 I rewatched season 1 & 2 before season 3 released so that my memory remain fresh while watching it but I also rewatched season 3 many times too. I can totally understand people, who haven't watched season 1 and 2 before and are only watching season 3, feeling it was a little bit rushed but for me who just finished rewatching the previous seasons the day before season 3 released, it felt perfect. They had enough slow burn for 2 seasons. I was looking for some action and I absolutely love how Colin didn't waste any moment after he realised his feelings for Penelope and that he could lose her. And I totally agree with you Saphne, Kanthony, George and Charlotte being new characters. The makers had to establish them in their seasons so getting together took some time but Polin had already been established so if they kept them apart for more time it would have felt dragging.

In the books, they explain why Colin took so long to fall in love with Penelope. He always expected love to hit him like a lightning bolt (which is part of the reason he thought his attraction to Marina was love at first sight), whereas his love for Penelope grew slowly. His love for her grew with every interaction they shared, he misinterpreted it as them becoming closer as friends. When he returns this time he continues to fall for her with each interaction but much more rapidly and realises something has changed about their relationship almost immediately after first seeing her, when he eventually realises his love for her he’s literally been falling for her for twelve years.

And as far as she knew, revealing to her mother that she had a source of income would probably lead directly to it thereafter being considered all communal family property, so unless they'd become drastically better to be around, which they hadn't, I don't see why she should do that.

I think it was Pen ignoring Colin that shook him out of his own head and made him realize she's grown up too. As he says in season 2, their relationship was so natural that he's always taken it for granted. He brings it up several times how loyal she's always been, how she's the one who is always responding to his letters and wants to talk about his travels even after everyone else is over it. She's always been his support and he didn't realize it With her not replying and ignoring him now, it's like he lost his balance. When he goes to find her again and try to get back her support, he realizes she's not his little friend anymore. She's grown up just like he has, but now she's the one floundering in her new adultness and he (who became a whore over the summer) now has the experience to be her support

​@roxirock5455 oh 100%. It's just crazy how people (in the show and surprisingly real life) are so shocked that she is beautiful (or that colin is as handsome as anthony). I think it's because for me, it's seeing a curvier girl on a popular show and being accepted/loved as she is. A reader, someone who was a wallflower and being herself. It makes me feel confidence I never really had growing up. Penelope/Nicola will always be an inspiration to me :)

I have the theory if pen literally confessed as far back as season 1 Colin would’ve been into it. Colin is one of those sweet summer children that needs someone to push him into revelation lol. The guy doesn’t even know what love is, he mixed it up with infatuation with Marina and assumed he just had to do what all the other gentlemen are doing: chase the diamond. He assumes Love is a thunderbolt and it happens when a new face appears on the dance floor and she suddenly gives him attention. His delayed come to Jesus moments make sense, honestly. He knew he had a special feeling for pen, but he couldn’t decipher it and figured it was just a childhood affection. He got insecure at the rejected feeling from other men trying to mock him for publicly being affectionate to pen. Because I’m sorry, the last two seasons of him committing sm impropriety with pen (taking her hand and walking away unchaperoned, dancing more than once w her, exchanging letters, being overprotective, finding any excuse to touch her hand.) that’s not ‘she’s my lil sis and buddy’ vibes.

Sorry Benji, I’m with Rizzo on this one! People grow and change, especially this young. They’re supposed to be like, early 20s right? Colin is going through a glow up and figuring out his real self, not just the one that society wants. And it’s the fact that Penelope is now actively looking for a husband that’s going to change his mind about her as a romantic prospect. He didn’t think of her that way before because she wasn’t really putting herself out there at all, and he had her nicely placed in the friend box. When our brains categorize someone in one way, we tend not to change that unless outside circumstances change. Now that romantic attention is on her from literally anyone else, he’s forced to consider whether he is part of that romantic attention too. It’s pretty standard friends to lovers, but we love to see it. :)

I think what Lady Whistledown wrote about Colin was true and I think that's also what bothered him even more, he's pretending to be something he's not. Penelope can see through his act. I think Colin is finally seeing how important Penelope is to him, he always cared about her but is now realizing that friendship is a two way street. Her not answering his letters over the summer through him off completely because she's usually the one person he can rely on to answer. She is his biggest supporter. Can't wait to see how their relationship progresses through out the season. Polin ❤

Yeah I actually really hated that because it’s so against his character. In the books Penelope was at Bridgerton house and accidentally overheard Colin say that to Anthony and Benedict because they were teasing him quite a bit about his closeness to Penelope. So in that sense it was him being embarrassed and harassed by his brothers and was just a split moment rebuttal to try to make them leave him alone. I guess it was changed in the show for ✨drama✨ purposes.

I would argue that in season 1, she was GOING to tell him! "When one is in love, one should declare it fervently." Then he cut her off and was like, "imma go traveling b/c you encouraged me to be more open" and then s2 almost EVERY CONVO is interrupted by Eloise, which is making Pen's double life hard enough w/o trying to pin Colin. Between the loss of Eloise & Colin running his mouth at the end of s2 (and turning up as a whole new person) Pen in s3 has every reason for not wanting to go near the Bridgerton fam at all. Which has made Colin notice her all the more. Also, he kept telling those girls, "If u knew about my travels, i would have to marry you," and yet WROTE TO PEN all about it?! Also, Francesca is my neurodivergent QUEEN 👸 😍 I haven't read much about her, so the portrayal took me by surprise, and i am ❤ here ❤ for ❤ it ❤

She went after George making fun of his mental health in S01, she without any reason instigates shit with the queen (like she hasn't even spoken to her why do you agitate her every damn time? It's never addressed by Penelope). She also did what she did to Marina and Eloise...that's not fighting bullies that IS bullying. Whistledown is how she vents and it showed clearly when she immediately regretted publishing after her talk with Colin.

I feel like a big thing that's overlooked in Colin not seeing Pen as a romantic option is that he's 3 years older than her. She's 19 in this season and he's 22. It's not a big age gap, but it makes sense to me that he wouldn't be interested in her until she was a bit older, and bc he associates her with Eloise in his mind.

I think the reason that Colin doesn't immediately recognize his feelings for Penelope is because they have known each other since they were young kids and he is also 2-3 years older than her. It's obvious from Season 1 and Season 2 that he is very fond of her and has love for her but it just hasn't dawned on him that it could be romantic. If they had been adults when they met, and it played out this way, I might agree with Benji but the fact that they met so young shapes a lot of their relationship.

Idk, I can see both sides. Pen was so obsequious around Colin in the first two seasons that it was hard for me to take her seriously. I was bummed on her behalf that Colin didn't reciprocate her crush, but I also didn't blame him. However, it shouldn't just take a few new clothes and hairdos for Colin to suddenly think Pen "counts" as a woman or to be attracted to her. "They are just clothes," as Colin put it this episode. I do like that Colin still sees Pen as a friend during her glow-up here, and shows that he values her and her feelings. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say the most satisfying moments would be when they can show both physical and emotional/mental attraction.

Colin has always liked Penelope. We’ve seen that over 3 seasons now. He says as much this episode. He misses her when he’s away. He seeks her out always. He values her. He respects her. He can’t lose her. The second she is upset with him it eats him up inside so much he wants to make it up to her. Colin also doesn’t realise Penelope’s affections for him run so deep. I don’t think that should be held against him. Season 3 for Colin is about him realising his feelings for Penelope have been there all along… not just appearing now. I think in his head he’s made up how love is supposed to feel or be & he’s only working out that love is built on a foundation of friendship first then grows to be more.

Your argument was so entertaining! My take on Colin 'suddenly' liking Penelope is that he has always kind of viewed her as off limits as she was his sister's best friend! Which might also explain why he said what he said at the end of season 2, although i still think him saying it to those people was the real heart of the problem. Penelope and Eloise having a falling out meant that Colin could interact with her in a way he couldn't before, and as events unfold in this season (trying to be as spoiler free as possible lol) he is able to realize that their connection is not really only friendship. If you pay attention to earlier seasons, he has always sought her out, protected her, and told her how much he appreciates her. He also generally, apart from that comment, has always been a great friend to her. It was just a matter of something happening that allowed him to identify that the feelings he might be having are romantic, as he is extremely oblivious to his own emotions.

i’m on rizzo’s side. i’ve seen a lot of ppl hating on colin/polin, likening it to plots where a guy ignores a girl or her feelings for him whatever. but from colin’s pov, she’s truly always been a family friend and he had no idea that she was even interested in him (he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed), so this season is him realizing damn maybe she IS the girl of my dreams after all if i step back from seeing her as just a childhood friend/long time neighbor. they’re giving you belong with me by taylor swift. i won’t say more to spoil the progression of the next episodes, but i think it’s episode 3 where i suddenly starting rooting for colin and polin as a ship. i love the trope where girl falls first but guy falls harder. ik it’s not everyone’s cup of tea tho.

I have been loving this season so far! We have been slowly watching these 2 fall in love with each other (pen longer) for the last few seasons. It's the season of Jane Austen's Emma and they've been doing a good job. This slow burn is great. While I understand why Eloise is angry I find it frustrating- what pen did was not good- but Eloise never stops to check her own privilege or the ways that she has hurt people in similar ways that Penn has. She loved whistledown and ate up everything she says, she only became angry when pen as Whistledown told the truth about her- I need them to make up. Colin is so dense/thick about Penn's feelings, I think subconsciously he has always loved her but never really delved into his feelings to see how real they were because of subconsciously believing she would never reciprocate them . He also clearly represents knightly and Penelope represents Emma so it makes sense why colin would think she would never reciprocate his feelings.

Something I just thought of when I saw your argument at the end (LOL by the way): I remember in Season 1 when Marina finally understood that Pen was in love with Colin, one thing she said was something along the lines as "he sees you even as a little sister like Hyacinth. He sees me as a woman and as a woman i must make these difficult choices for myself & my child." And I then in Season 2, she did indeed pull for Pen by saying "if you opened your eyes, you will already see you have so many ppl you make happy: your family, Penelope." So I REALLY do think that all the right foundational feelings about Pen were already inside Colin. It was just all about seeing her as a WOMAN, thus the makeover and Pen ACTIVELY searching for a husband this season. I do believe you can truly love your friend more than the world but to be IN LOVE with your friend requires you to be able to see them in a more physical capacity (unless you're on the ace spectrum).

34:00 I’m of the mind that Colin has always been in love with Penelope but never recognised it because he confused his romantic feelings for platonic feelings. There’s been many scenes where we’re left stumped trying to figure out a platonic explanation for but haven’t found one: The what-a-barb scene in season 1 ep 4, his voice faltering as soon as Penelope walks in on season 1 episode 8 then he goes back to singing like normal as soon as he breaks eye-contact, the eye sex scene in season 2 episode 2, the fact that like he says, he’s always leaving mid conversation with other people to go to Pen as soon as he spots her. I think Colin thinks love is supposed to hit him like a lightning bolt but what he has for Pen is a slow-burn that spans years. Just my opinion though🤷🏾‍♀️

I completely agree with the idea that he shouldn’t have had to like her romantically this entire time to “deserve her.” That feels so odd to me when I see people say that. He grew up with her! It’s extremely rare that friends, especially both people, see each other romantically after years of time together. Often times when friendship turns to love, it can be one sided as we see here for Pen. If the roles were reversed, would we say the woman needed to love the man all this time to deserve him? We don’t choose when we fall in love with someone. I also don’t think the narrative is completely that he goes for her when another man does, there are other moments in the episodes ahead that something is starting in him.

A) thanks rizzo for not pitting the women against each other. There is so much discourse over the decisions they make (obviously, I participate in the conversation) and forgetting the nuance of the characters. It is tiring having to meet in the middle or defend the characters for doing what they needed to do. Also, we may be insulting characterization that is written. B) cringe Colin is purposeful. Don’t worry. You will love him. Out of all the characters, he reminds me of Darcy the most. C) i am mixed with the side plots. Some scenes could be cut or condensed. D) I like what they did with Cressida and Eloise so far, but am worried if all of Cressida’s development would be wiped in part 2. D) phillipa and her husband are adorable.
