Traditionally it was common in a lot of places for noble husbands and wives to sleep in seperate bedrooms, except on the nights where they were trying to have children. Majority of the time these couples were strangers who had become married so it was partly done for the sake of comfortability. The reason why we never see that in the show is because all the couples love each other and are breaking from tradition.

I also have the theory that he got so nervous when she asked for a kiss because he thought she was asking him to seriously court her. He almost looked disappointed when she said ‘it wouldn’t mean anything and she wouldn’t put him in any kind of position.’ I also think he just hesitates with the kiss out of respect for pen, it’s a forbidden request and could ruin her if they were caught. I’m sure if the social faux pas of it all wasn’t an issue it would be an easy decision. He started connecting the dots that he seriously loved her from all the little moments: feeling jealous when she actually had good interactions with suitors. Him folding his fingers onto hers when she bandaged him, him seeing her look so lovely in a Parisian styled dress after he said to her that he liked the style in passing. He loves that she actually listens to him. The big heart drop moment of seeing pen mad at him for his slip up past season, The panic it gave him of losing her affection was real. wanting to find any silly way to be close to her again with this tutoring thing. I wonder if he was intentionally giving her vague advice to ensure she wouldn’t actually find anyone lol.

I was so annoyed at Eloise for saying "we used to say we would be spinsters together" because NO. You used to say that, but Penelope has made it very clear at multiple occasions that is not what she wants. God, i love Eloise, but she can be so self observed sometimes, especially with Penelope. Penelope is so obviously a romantic who wants out of her house and for Eloise of all people to not acknowledge that.... People often say how s"ity of a friend Penelope was, which fair, but Eloise is not that much better. I remember in season one when Eloise thought Madame Delcrau was Lady Wissledown and said they should aspire to be like her and Penelope pointed out how she isn't in the same situation as Eloise and can't achieve the life that she wants as easily as her, with just one decision, and Eloise thinks about it for 1 minute and then just brushes it off. This is just one example of Eloise blatantly ignoring Penelope's wishes and thoughts, without realizing it unfortunately. And just refusing to see her perspective, which just pushes her into expressing herself though Wissledown more.
@PinkPopcast5 ай бұрын

Preach. Eloise didn't see the obvious right in front of her for TWO YEARS. She has heard Pen being herself, having the same quick wit as LW, yet never connected the dots. Eloise is one of those people that gets so uber focused on one 'social justice warrior' issue that she is blind to all others. Like Lady Danbury's husband made us all emotional with his 'seeing him for who he is' speech concerning people of color, then completely ignoring the fact that women were still being HEAVILY oppressed, including the one right next to him that he doesn't give two sh!ts about.
@roxirock54555 ай бұрын
@@mamaseesa3122That's why I want both Eloise and Penn to apologize because realistically, they've both been awful friends, but they still care about each other. I do feel like people don't give as much attention to how much Eloise ignored Penn because it's more subtle, but when you look at it. Yea, it's really bad. My girl complained about women wearing feathers in their hair because "they look like birds trying to attract a mate" in front of Penn, WHO HAD FEATHERS IN HER HAIR A BUCH OF TIMES in the first season. Like Eloise, you don't have to like it, but at least have the decency of noticing Penelope does.

@@roxirock5455 agreed! Both women are feminists in different ways but Eloise believes that her way of being a feminist and a woman is the only correct way which is infuriating ( speaking as someone who is a feminist- there is more Than 1 way to be one- she is a good example of feminist who believe there is only one way to be one). Eloise’s entitlement and not recognizing her own privilege and a bunch of small things that make her a bad friend. I think penn would of come clean sooner had she thought Eloise would listen and actually accept her- Eloise was obsessed with LW.
@alyssagggghik5 ай бұрын
@@roxirock5455 exactly. I think Penelope has obviously said and done some not so nice things as Whistledown, but it’s important to remember also that everytime except for when she went to write about Colin (who tbh, low key deserved that call out lol) she has exhausted every other option of not using Whistledown to solve a problem before she used it. Also, there were multiple situations that she held back that could have been suspicious. The fact that she didn’t report much scandal on the Bridgertons especially Eloise put a target on them by the Queen who before this season would likely have laughed if Penelope told her who she was. Penelope told Eloise several times to not be seen meeting with Theo- and was completely ignored until it became a problem she had the ability to solve. Especially since had Eloise been anyone else and servants were gossiping, Penelope would’ve written about it by that point. She held back until she felt she HAD to. Should she have confided in Eloise beforehand? Yes. But Eloise never really listened to her anyway, how are we supposed to know SHE would’ve believed her at the time?? I think the only reason Eloise believed it was because she had figured it out herself. I think if Penelope had confessed beforehand that Eloise would’ve also laughed and thought it was a joke.

Theoretical Kissing is brought up in a conversation between them, which gets both of them a little bothered & Penelope asks because she just grabs the courage to ask for this thing she wants. Then the kiss turns out to be much more steamy…. Pen in no way moves on from her feelings for Colin at any point, she just doesn’t believe he feels the same

Colin has always liked Penelope subconsciously he has just always relegated those feelings to mean friendship in his head and didn't allow himself to delve into his feelings believing she would never reciprocate them. The kiss will now bring all those feelings to the forefront in a new and confusing way to Colin. from the beginning of the series it was obvious that Colin liked Penelope- he constantly talked to Penelope, singled her out in rooms- gravitating towards her and acted around Penelope that at that time would be considered inappropriate- holding her hand, the type of conversations that they would have, being unchaperoned etc. Their gradual relationship has been developing since season 1. To be honest, I was quite disappointed that they included the brothel scene of Colin, but after reading some discussions about it, I realized I quite like what it represents. In this episode, Colin is saying to the ladies that he is late for the meeting, but in the next scene, he is waiting for Penelope to arrive. It could be a coincidence, but I believe it just shows how much he is trying to pretend he is someone else entirely. In fact, he changed quite a lot after previous seasons due to his disapointment with Marina (when he was romantic and naive) and his travels (when no one wanted to hear about them, so this "nerd" side of him was also suppressed). And now, Penelope cut him off too (understandable of course), so he changed himself to be a little bit more like other men of the ton - rakes. I really like what they did with Colin this season, even his struggle to find some meaning in casual sex when he writes about it in his journal (I saw a theory that he might be demisexual, which could be interesting to include that, I don't think there is much representation of demisexuals in movies/series). I hate her redemption arc. We don’t have time for it. There’s only 8 episodes. She and her family are sucking up way too much screen time. She’s a villain 🦹🏼 why can’t she just be a villain? We don’t have to humanize every character. We could’ve gotten baby Colin and Pen flashbacks. With some baby Eloise. Colin and Eloise fighting over Penelope. When they were little. I would’ve preferred to see that. And the Mondrich’s are taking up to my screen time too, especially how repetitive their story is. We could’ve gotten scenes with Penelope and Violet Penelope and Benedict Penelope and members of the Bridgerton family. Imagine Benedict grabbing Penelope for dance to escape matchmaking mamas. And we could’ve seen some of their family connections that they’ve had for 15 years. Since it’s her season and her story. It would only make sense that every character surrounds the main characters.

@@sarickacampbell2642 Every character didn't surround Anthony and Kate last season. There was a lot of Featherington subplot (not Penelope, but the others) that I could have done without, and other things going on.

I love how the actors continue to act and react in the background instead of just standing there when they aren't in focus. The moment Eloise tells Cressida the secret, you can see the eyes and smile of the lady in the background get big. She's later seen whispering with others as Pen looks across the room, so you know exactly who spread the gossip. I don't remember names well, so I had no idea who Cressida was talking about until I started paying attention to the background. The background actors contribute so much to the story. Like in season 2's Featherington Ball, when Colin grabbed Pen's hand to lead her somewhere private. The actors, including his mother, saw and reacted to it. That's why Pen's mom went looking for them after that public display. When they return to the party, Pen and Colin dance together (showing public interest). This leads to the men asking Colin about his intentions with Pen. If Pen wasn't Lady Whistledown, her and Colin would have been brought up ages ago. The more I learn about some history in that time period, the more I realize just how inappropriate Colin has been. He constantly seeks out Pen at social gatherings and writes letters to her. Those were considered big signs of a couple being serious or almost engaged. It's no wonder she stops writing him after he says he would never court her. His actions said otherwise. In hindsight, he might have been trying to protect her reputation because others saw them leave together, but he also made her appear even more undesirable to others who respect the Bridgertons' opinions.
@mariselaorta19815 ай бұрын
I think that was more than someone being a good background actor. I understood it as integral to the story. She overhears what Eloise says. And she is the one who looks directly at Cressida after the other women ask who has any gossip. When Cressida leaves that circle, it's that same actor who then begins to smile really big at the other young ladies as if to say that she herself has some gossip to share. Then the women huddle up to hear her gossip. This character is also the same person who sneered at Penelope and is called out by Lord Dubling. I think she's another mean girl type. I think she took a lot of pleasure in spreading gossip about Penelope. All this to say, this character's behavior in the background was, imo, absolutely scripted. I'm surprised none of the reactors I watch have caught that she overheard Eloise--hence her smile as she is eavesdropping. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
@cymbamcreynolds88385 ай бұрын
@@mariselaorta1981 I know it was scripted. Background acting is often not noticed because there isn't much to see that adds to the story in other shows. In this show, they make the most of every extra to contribute to the story and how events flow from one scene to the other. That's what I meant and why I used the example from last season as well. The context given by the background actors seeing and reacting to Colin's public displays of improper conduct creates a domino of events that feel natural for the story instead of forced for the sake of it.

6:50 In high society it was frowned upon for a man and his wife to share a room. They’d each have their own bedchamber. The husband might visit the wife in her room after her lady’s maid is done helping her, but then they’d sleep separately. This was also considered more proper since the servants would come into the bedrooms in the morning. The rules are more relaxed for the rest of the gentry and they don’t exist at all for the working class.

1) I read somewhere that Cressida's hair is like that because, at the time, the more elaborate your hairstyle, the more money you had, and the more you showed it to everyone. And her crazy costumes are an allusion to caged birds, to show how she's utterly under control of her parents. 2) I interpreted Colin cutting his hand as him being flustered, embarrassed and angry, so he held a shard on his palm and closed his hand without realizing it. That is far from the first thing in Bridgerton that doesn't actually hold up to much scrutiny. Will Mondrich, former boxer and now part of the ton, used to hit Simon a lot during practice, but Simon never bruised. Anthony very likely had syphilis, and probably the other men who visited brothels (Colin?). The cure wasn't found until 1943. 3) I find it kinda funny that Eloise still didn't think Penelope wants a husband, even after the "We can't all be pretty Bridgertons" speech.

It really is Portia's fault that Pen didn't marry, she should have asked Lady Danbury to help her because her and her daughter are very alike, but have very different values. I feel like Portia was probably like Pen when she was younger then became cold and calculated by being forced into a loveless marriage and having to become the "man" of the family after her husband gambled their money. You see how the families of lower rank are stressed to get their girls married off and show no love to them because there's a lot at stake compared to people like the Bridgertons who can afford to look for love.

People need to stop saying that the brothel scene (in both 2&4) is unnecessery, it's fckin necessery. In this ep he literally wrote in his diary that he had sex but felt lonely because there was no emotional connection, until he kissed Pen he finally felt sthg for her because they have a connection. And in episode 4 (i think you guys all watched it) Colin didn't even want to have sex, and when that 2 girls doing their thing (you know) he didn't even look at them because Pen haunted his mind. And the reason Colin forces himself to be a rake is because all his friends, even Beneddict and Anthony are rakes, he just want to fit in with his peers.
@PinkPopcast5 ай бұрын
Exactly! People really are like, “I KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU - WHY AREN’T YOU MAKING THE DECISIONS I WOULD MAKE!?” instead of, you know, allowing someone to go on their own journey. So what if Colin has consensual meaningless sex before realizing that’s not what he wants? It’s not a crime, a character flaw, or even an emotional affair as he’s not even dating Penelope. People are acting like he’s a cheater despite the fact that THEY have shipped him before he even made up his mind

I don’t trust Cressida. Okay, she wasn’t responsible this time. But she didn’t have anything to lose by not being awful. In fact, she wants to gain Eloise’s friendship and make herself look more approachable for potential husbands. I think if her circumstances change, so will her attitude. Pen and Cressida have a lot in common but they differ in one important thing: Pen as Lady Whistledown punches up, even challenging the Queen herself, Cressida always punches down, choosing the easiest targets. I don’t think she truly changed

I honestly don't see how people think Pen is so horrible as LW. She tells the gossip that people want to hear. She exposes the nasties when necessary (such as Lord Burbrooke). She's nice to the ladies that deserve it (the lady that snorted she says would stand out in a crowd, she doesn't poke fun at her snort). She does it to herself as well, we know if Cressida was LW she would've chosen herself as the diamond. The only 'bad things' she's really done have been to expose Marina - done in order to protect Colin and the Bridgerton family - and damage Eloise's reputation - which clearly is not completely ruined and was done to protect Eloise. I don't see how she is such a bad person.
@HuntingViolets5 ай бұрын
I'm not sure the things she's written about the King's mental illness or the death of Charlotte and George's granddaughter and great-grandson, which was played more or less for laughs in Whistledown, is exactly punching up -- nor Marina, nor Eloise (I've read all the justifications for those ad infinitem). YMMV (and obviously does).

EXACTLY! Some of us need to feel that physical attraction before the mental one. Obviously we could judge Colin for being shallow and disregarding Penelope (if that is what he was doing) but he’s not inherently a bad guy just cause he didn’t automatically fall in love with her. He really only ever pursued one other woman on this show and it was super wholesome from his perspective.

Watching Pen sitting by the window all day after writing about herself as LW like that made me imagine Benji singing: 🎶 There's a possibilityyyyy... IYKYK 🤣 Also Rizzo's frustration while explaining who the "cheese couple" is: ME! 🙄🤣 Last thing: I relate to Colin little rake moment SO MUCH. Hear me out: As an autistic demisexual woman who's also quite sensitive and hopelessly romantic, I had my fair share of casual sexual encounters that made me feel exactly what Colin described in his journal. I became a very charming person because my entire family is quite charming and seem to get on with people or even find their match quite easily... Except me. So I mirrored the practices that I felt would best apply to me and developed a persona. It was amusing at first... But meaningless. I didn't understand that I'd only feel something, *anything,* with someone I can be myself with, until I fell in love with a dear friend. It wasn't reciprocated, but I did get chance to... Ehem, experience that epyphany. I'm afraid same goes for Colin. I am a mix between the burden of the older sibling (Anthony) and the odd sensitive one looking for meaning in everything (Colin). So I WILL NOT take any more "rake" Colin slander! 🤣 Love you guys! 🤍

I havent seen this in the comments yet so I just wanted to point it out- Colin's Rake Era (tm) seems pretty obvious to be him putting on a persona. I don't wanna spoil the other two episodes for anyone who hasn't seen them yet but what he writes in his journal that Pen read about missing emotional intimacy when having physical intimacy is pretty clear that he's not fully into that life (especially when compared to scenes in ep 3/4). I find it interesting that both Colin and Pen spend the first couple episodes trying to mold their personality into what the ton wants, only to ultimately fail when the person who knows them best can see through it (remember what Lady Whistledown wrote about Colin putting on an act in ep 1). Its totally fun to make fun of him for being a rake but its clearly supposed to be uncomfortable, bc its not actually him. Sometimes when Penelope is with Colin, I think she feels guilt and indirectly tries to tell Colin she is LW or how Eloise found out even though the ton would be nothing without LW, her guilt eventually rears its head. Growing up with her father and mother trying to get a head in life she found an easier way to make money while having a voice being a wallflower, but this is just my theory. Keep being the amazing guys you are

I think sometimes if you've known someone since y'all were both kids it takes something shocking to change how you see them.

The tradition of married couples having their own rooms and beds was for birth control. Often there was a connecting hallway. A wife could light the hallways lights as a way to tell her husband he was invited over. 😊

7:06 There’s no way Anthony would let Kate have a separate bed. 😂 He turned the viscountess's chambers into an office for her.

If Anthony ever said to Kate like I would never let you do something..., u know there's gonna be a fight coming as to he is not someone to let her do or not do something. ( As she does not like taking his orders) And that fight can end by Kate going to Viscountess chamber making Anthony suffer for the night. But Kate would never willingly want to go to diff. bed chamber.

I haven’t watched this yet but can I just say, I’m new here and have been bingeing a bunch of your videos, and I LOVE that you guys actively respond to comments with detailed opinions of your own!! So many times reactors either ignore comments or just give likes and little notes of agreement, but you guys don’t and I really appreciate that as a new viewer! :)

Technically the other couples had separate rooms, they just didn’t make it a big announcement like this episode. It was mentioned in passing a couple times in season 1

This question is for the book readers Does anyone else scream when Colin says we are going to to the drawing room because they know what scene (maybe) is coming up? The “you’re my mess” scene. And considering how many little intimate moments happen in these drawing rooms between Pen and Colin, I wondered if the show is hinting at this.

I did not realize I commented twice. lol. But here goes a third one. I was drinking water in the process when lemonade was mentioned and Rizzo drinking water was priceless. Colin was trying to be Hitch to Penelope. Eloise made me upset the second she opened her mouth to Cressida about Colin and Penelope. Francesca just wants to play her music and have a peaceful, quiet life with whoever her husband is, not the diamond with a spotlight on her. And my mouth dropped when she said, “Inserts himself? Inserts himself where?” I paused and stood up saying, “I would be like Charlotte telling my daughters how it works and draw pictures.” I would not be like their mother or Violet not spilling the actual tea when it comes down to martial relations. Geez! Again, love you guys and your channel! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

In truth, sleeping in the same bed as your spouse is a relatively new phenomenon, since about the 60s? Prior to that, throughout a great deal of history, it was seen as unhealthy to share a bed and most couples would sleep in separate beds if they could afford it. In the Regency era, noble couples only shared a bed for conception purposes then retreated to their own rooms for sleeping. Honestly, IMO, it’s probably the best way to do it. Imagine how much better we’d all sleep if we didn’t have another person next to us snoring, rolling over, flailing around and so on.

For real though. I always tell potential partners that once or twice a week I might need to sleep on my own 😂

Idk, I don't think it's an universal thing, each couple it's different, the ideal situation changes depending on what's best for each couple. My mom is so used to my dad that when he takes extra night shifts at work she can't properly sleep missing him on her side. It works for them. I also have an aunt that always sleeps in her own room apart from her husband for years now because she simply couldn't get a good night sleep with him around and it works for them as well. The best situation is the one that suits each couple the most.
