Indeed. It's funny, as a long-time comics reader, I always preferred Thor and Iron-Man, and Cap was always an afterthought. But the strength of his 3 films, and Chris Evans' performance, Cap became my favorite MCU character.

The name "Winter Soldier" is a play on "summer soldier," meaning someone whose help can be counted on only when what's asked of them is easy (like "fair-weather friend"). The term comes from a speech by Thomas Paine during the American Revolution: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." So the title is a double meaning: Bucky is the Winter Soldier because he fell into an icy crevasse, and is cold and emotionless; but Steve is a winter soldier in Paine's sense, someone who can be counted on even when the going gets tough.

The comic book origin by Brubaker also showed Bucky as the sniper/scout of any unit with Cap. The Invaders [Human Torch, Toro, Namor, Cap, and Bucky] were used in special missions in every theater of war. Europe, Pacific, stateside spy-smashers, allied with costumed allies against the crack troops and special costumed agents of enemies. A rare mission in the Eastern front pitting nazis against Russians brought the Invaders to the side of the Red Army. The German army was using Baron Blood in a winter assault. The Russian general had no superhumans. He only had his battle-hardened soldiers and the unrelenting Winter. He had great respect for Bucky's skills on the battlefield, more than his role in publicity. When Cap and Bucky called for backup as they tried to catch the drone plane in the fateful last wartime mission, a Russian submarine commanded by the General was in the coastal waters. Cap fell into the waters before the drone exploded. Bucky lost his arm in the explosion but fell into the waters close enough to be recovered by the Russians. Instead of reporting the sea rescue, the General was able to secret him away and saved by Russian surgeons. This was the origin of The Winter Soldier. He was a Russian Cold War secret agent/assassin until the discovery of Red Skull in the trade for weapons decades later.

This was my favourite Marvel movie. There's so much happening here. Marvel basically made a political thriller. It makes you question everything to do with SHIELD. Without this movie, half of Civil War doesn't exist. The Avengers operated through SHIELD, with no SHIELD Tony Stark basically takes over their operations.

One of the best of the solo MCU movies. Fast paced plot that kept you guessing great character moments and development well shot action scenes as well as an introduction to the new generation of MCU heroes. What I love of about Sam is that he treats Steve like a fellow solider not as the larger than life icon the rest of the world sees him as sure Steve has the Avengers but they’re more or less coworkers to him being in the service Sam understands Steve’s struggle with readjusting to society post-combat Sam is probably the first real friend Steve has had in a long time and it makes their relationship much more meaningful. Steve also had his own character development he always had a firm black and white view of morality and it was challenged in this movie the reveal that SHIELD the last tether to the life he knew was corrupted by Hydra the enemy he failed to destroy the reveal that the Winter Soldier who he thought was just another Hydra thug who needed to die was really his not so dead best friend Steve really struggled with what he had to do and it gets to the core of who Steve Rogers is as a man not as Captain America Steve does what’s right even if its hard if it meant SHIELD would be destroyed if it meant risking to be a fugitive Steve would see it through if it meant the bad guys would lose. Originally I though Chris Evans was bland and couldn’t pull off being Cap since the last two movies did nothing for me but his ‘Price for freedom’ speech convinced me otherwise this solidified he is Steve. Nat also had great scenes her buddy cop moments with Steve were hilarious and she complimented him Steve’s a soldier he sees and does things straight forward and blunt as an expert in espionage Nat is more subtle and cunning which is why they worked well together.

Ah, Batroc the Leaper there at the beginning, on the ship. One of my favorite comic book villains. Doomed in every adaptation of any kind ever to be that guy who's tough enough to actually challenge Cap long enough for Steve to look super cool beating him up on the way to whoever the actual main antagonist is.

Easily the best Cap America movie and dare I say, one of the best in the MCU. I remember watching this with my younger sister who was a fan of the actor playing Bucky. Since she knew nothing about comics (aside from what her geek brother tells her lol) she was not spoiled about the big reveal...but alas, after the Winter Soldier's first apperance, in her own words: "I recognize those eyes anywhere, that's Sebastian Stan WTF how is Bucky alive!!!!".

But they did a really good job of obscuring the Winter Soldier's identity until that last possible moment. Comic fans knew who was behind the mask so it wasn't a huge secret but it still works with in the film. Sebastian Stan is almost unrecognizable from his previous roles with the long hair, mask and goggles.

The Fury assassination attempt/car chase sequence comes at just the right point in the film to always be shocking no matter how many times I watch the film. The tone and pacing after the open action sequence almost makes you forget that this is superhero action film; then, BANG! Big action set piece and titular villian introduction! The Causeway sequence is the same: exposition scene, characters travelling and planning. Seem there's going to be a big fight to infiltrate SHEILD...WHAM! Winter Soldier in your face! Ambushing targets in transit seems to be the Winter Soldier's preferred tactic. Fury, Steve and Natasha and the Odessa mission he previously shot Nat on. The flashback in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier also shows him ambushing while the target is moving locations in a hotel.

23:48 it doesn't address this in the films but one of the effects of the super-soldier serum is accelerated healing. A gunshot wound might only take him a few days to heal. Black Widow also had a variant of the super-soldier serum. It didn't give her increased strength to the level that it did to Steve Rodgers but she does have accelerated healing enhanced durability. Bucky/The Winter Soldier had the serum as well so, everything applies to him as well.

Generally the most loved and acclaimed Marvel movie. It's a great movie in itself regardless of connection to the MCU and having Robert Redford in it, no one could believe it at the time. I think it would have had even more love as a pure action movie had it not come out the same year as John Wick and The Raid 2.

Yup, Hydra was responsible for the death of Howard Stark and his wife. The headline that was shown said it was a car accident. Remember that. That was Loki’s scepter that Hydra had at the end. Not something from Odin

by the way in the comics originally there was a different version of Nick Fury. He had grey sideburns and was a secret agent character like James Bond. Title: Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD, art by Steranko - Nick wore a dark action outfit with pouches and an eyepatch. He used a silencer.

BUCKY!!!! 😍 I absolutely love the musical sting that plays whenever the Winter Soldier appears. It's so grating and makes him so much scarier, just from the sound! Also, still makes me laugh to see Natasha with her wavy hair after her shower when they visit Sam, and then it's stick-straight in the next scene. Sam owns a hair straightener!

After watching this movie 7 times I finally realized it's absolutely crazy that you could pick a random place on a street and be able to laser your way straight down to some place safe. And they did it twice at two random places. What are they going down to? A sewer system? Even if there happened to be a perfect place to escape under the road it would likely be a pretty big drop. Did they use climbing gear? If it went down to a subway system it would be like a 20 foot drop even after you finished falling the distance of the hole you made.

very interesting comment. I would add that perhaps Fury is strategic and knows about such escape tactics ahead of time - but - how does he get away so quickly? The Winter Soldier could just jump in the hole and pursue a wounded man, at least Fury would be shaken after the SUV crash and be very slow. Is it possible that there was support mechanisms left in the sewer system to facilitate escape? - I would think unlikely. Okay one possible solution is Fury had escape gear in the SUV and used that, so he had a portable scooter and took it with him, a sewer scooter, maybe with rockets for initial speed that fall off as one time use then it's just a powered scooter. Okay I'll combine a 2nd comment here, Let's assume Fury escaped using a very powerful cutting laser with 5 charges, he used 4 charges to cut a square hole then left it as a booby trap to cut anyone who tries to jump in after him, thereafter the laser device would self detonate to cause a cave in. He also had a small escape device that he took from the van codenamed "last mile" I can show you examples of such devices smaller than a backpack. Fury unknowingly was tracked by the Winter Soldier using surveillance from the sky but they did lose him eventually near Cap's home. Hydra intelligence then figured out where he could have got to and the Winter Soldier situated himself in another building as sniper and shot through the wall. We then follow the story from there.

The think I Love about the MCU is that they don't really make superhero or comic book movies. That's the setting but not the theme. The themes are different in most MCU movies. This one is more of a spy thriller, that is set in the MCU universe.

Dana says- If you really liked this movie, and like Marvel in general, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is AMAZING. Half way through Season 1, you get to see how the events from this movie effect the inner workings of SHIELD. There are some tie ins with other MCU movies, but mostly it's an awesome show about the agents and how they work/live/love/fight for the world we see in the MCU and the newly powered individuals within it. No full Marvel watch is complete without it. (You also see & learn more about some of the "lesser" characters you've seen in the movies, like Maria Hill, Phil Coulson & Lady Sif.)

My favorite moment in a movie full of great moments is the "I'm not gonna launch those ships" guy. Can you imagine? Steve tells him Nazis want those ships in the air, so even with a gun to his head-before anyone else has said they're with him-he refuses. The courage! Extraordinary. I maybe would have liked to see that bravery result in a launch delay so the audience would appreciate it more. One could argue it's more powerful because it didn't have much effect. That guy did what was right _only_ because it was right. Also, someone should tell Sharon that when you're holding a hand-to-hand combat expert at gunpoint it is okay to be a couple steps away.

Winter Soldier is my favorite solo movie for sure. It does a great job of being a political action thriller, and I love the nod to All The President's Men with Watergate in the shot as Cap gets in the elevator after leaving Robert Redford's office. Guardians is probably going to go over great, especially since Mary is a big music fan

Once you get to phase 3, Marvel really perfected the formula and every movie is a 10/10. ....except for Infinity War. That one is a 50/10 and we're all really just waiting for her to get there.

Still one of the best Marvel movies. One very minor nitpick - in some early scenes the shield has the familiar star-and-circle pattern, but in a neutral grey color; in most it's the usual red white and blue.

Fave three MCU movies in order: 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2. Avengers: Infinity War 3. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1. Thor: Ragnarok used to be #3, but its lack of emotional power really hurts it on repeat viewings.

I like Ragnarok overall, but the silliness was overdone, at least with Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster. I also don't think that Hela's origin should have been changed.

@@jeffthompson9622 Without getting spoilery in the Comments section, I'll just say that the choice to hire a director of light comedy does not lend itself to sustained dramatic moments...or any dramatic moments at all. It's a fun ride, but Waititi can't hold a dramatic beat for five seconds without undercutting it with a joke, and that's not an exaggeration. I don't think that serves character arcs or the subject matter well.

Funny you mention emotional power but list GOTG 1 as third when it might have the least emotional punch of all the movies to date and certainly less than the 2nd. Anyway, my top 5 would be 1 Winter Soldier 2 Endgame 3 Civil War 4 Ragnarok 5 I waffle between Infinity War and Age of Ultron on this one. Right now would be infinity war.

@@scottb3034 I cried at the opening scene of Guardians 1. Few scenes in Marvel can do that to me. And then you see Pete later and realize he's still perpetually stuck in that moment, and one of the themes in the movie is him finally maturing and moving out of that. That's emotional heft that's never undercut by anything in the movie; it's allowed to breathe, develop, and resolve over the course of the film. Thor: Ragnarok never sat with any emotion for more than a few seconds before undercutting it with a joke; some of the jokes were earned and some were cheap, but they all eliminated emotional heft. Even Ant-Man was allowed to have more honest emotional impact than Thor: Ragnarok. In the end though that's not the main reason I like Guardians 1. It has a sprightly airiness about it that almost no other blockbuster movie has and that's hard to achieve with a much smaller cast and story and no special effects to weigh things down. It *feels* absolutely effortless. Which is nonsense, of course, millions of man-hours were spent making it, but you don't *feel* them when you watch the movie; Vol 2, by contrast, has more emotional weight but man can you hear and feel it creaking many times. Vol 1 feels like it sprang fully-formed from the head of James Gunn. It's perfection of its type in a way few other movies are, no matter how large or small they might be.

My 3 favorite MCU movies are Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. Avengers 1 and Avengers: Infinity War are runner ups.

In terms of my favorite MCU movies, Winter Soldier, Black Panther and The Avengers are definitely my top 3. There are very few I don't love - The Incredible Hulk, Ironman 3, Thor Ragnarok are definitely on my no list though. Guardians of the Galaxy is wonderful and I know you'll love it.

Definitely T2, but not the Special Edition. The theatrical cut is much tighter and less exploitative. Plus the ending is much much better.

My favorites are this one, Avengers Infinity War and Captain America Civil War, I think. Honored mentions to Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 1 and Spiderman Far From Home ☺️ Anyways, I wasn't a big fan of Steve Rogers judging just by his first movie, but Captain America is definitely the best "franchise" inside the MCU. The first movie is good, but the other two are flawless 💛 Cap ended up being my favorite Avenger, alongside someone else you don't know yet

For the ones we've already seen this and the avengers are my faves. But for the whole mcu my faves are yet to come (so if you don't want to read the titles of future movies, don't continue reading): 1. Captain America: Civil War 2. Black Panther 3. Thor: Ragnarok (But my top ten are really close together)

Best MCU movie, full stop. Steve goes to 'his' exhibit at the Smithsonian because its the only place he can see his friends; that's why he goes incognito, he isn't there for recognition or adoration, he's lonely.

Mari Stan Lee is in every marvel movie from the marvel Disney movies to the Spider-Man movies from Sony to the X-Men movies the movie venom and the Deadpool movies even the marvel netflix shows he's in them one way or another , that includes speaking roles and just pictures and posteres
