If you don't watch Karate Kid 1,2 and 3, you will miss a LOT of references. The whole show references and brings back characters from the original movies and some plots are even based on the original story line and movies.

Id rewatch all 3 Karate Kid films before watching anymore, it will really help with nostalgia and references that you probably won’t pick up without watching them, but if you don’t want too, don’t, it’s up to you but just a recommendation!!
