The dude that slaps Conan around during sword lessons is my former karate instructor, the late Kiyoshi Yamazaki (Fight coordinator for this and Lynch's Dune). He even got me Arnold's autograph when I was a kid back in 84-ish. They remained friends until Master Yamazaki's death last year.

If you enjoyed this, you should check out the original stories by Robert E. Howard. They were published in pulp magazines back in the day. They are really awesome and have tons of lore that isn't really explained, but is instead lived through the characters. They have them as audiobooks, and they are short enough that they are great to listen to while driving or during work.

Released right in the sweet spot of the sword & sorcery craze (among adolescent boys that is) of the 1980s. You may find Excalibur much better made and more dynamic--hardly anyone seems to react to that one, tho.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have probably watched it more than 100 times. I saw this with my family at the drive in when it released, and I was about 13. I liked it so much I talked them into staying through the second feature to see it again. I remember watching this on video with my father and he would constantly point out all the body builders in the movie, because he was into the body building scene in the 80s. And the soundtrack is my favorite soundtrack. I can listen to it over and over and never get tired, and I have. I cannot say enough good things about this, so I will say one bad thing... I do not care for some of the extra scenes in the extended/directors cut.

Film facts: Arnold had to lean out to do this film, whereas Momoa had to bulk up! -The name of the soup was "split pea and HAND". -There was a franchise planned for Conan, like the Bond movies but after the sequel and Red Sonja under performed, it was scuttled. -The scene where Conan is drunk, was almost cut because the producer thought it lessened him but the director won out and it was kept in. -The swordmaster was the actual sword instructor for the movie. -The woman that is given to Conan was a pornstar who didn't know anything about the scene, that was to be filmed. Her reaction to seeing Arnold was genuine because that was the first time she saw him. Both Thulsa Doom and Conan's father are wrong. The strongest of steel will rust, the strongest of flesh will rot but the strongest of wills lasts *forever.* Conan survives because of the strength of his will and he overcomes/defeats Thulsa Doom because of the strength of his will. Also... Conan commits a huge blasphemy by praying to Crom for something. You don't ask crom for things, you thank him for the gift he's given you. Crom answers Conan prayer but makes him pay for it, for the rest of his life... And he's gonna live for a long time.

I remember watching this when I was 11 or so on VHS. My first Arnold movie. What an amazing movie. Pretty violent at that time. And with James Earl Jones an acting powerhouse as a villain. Arnold on the Fantasy wave at that time. The sequel has a lighter tone, but it's still mindless fun. Red Sonja though is not really worth watching. Maybe once for the checklist 😅 The remake of Conan was pretty forgettable as well. It just wasn't Noldie.

Its most probable that the atlantean sword was made of star metal aka alloys or raw metals found in meteorites formed somehow either at the birth of the galaxy, or a similar cosmic incidenct. This would explain how it does hardly get dull, and retained a strongly oxidized exteriour after millennia of being forgotten in a desert tomb. The Warlord buried in the tomb is atlantean so he had access to some of the best craftsmen of the time, the very best, in materials, too. This is why it is able to cut soft steel of chains and restraints, and does not lose the edge after being struck against stone to clean it of the soot and grime all over it. The woman was a shapeshifter, a simple wisp, or a greater will o the wisp be precise. Powerful shapeshifting creatures that take up the form of a ghostly light, or ghostly semi-human appearing being, but can transform or race into any creature of the forest - just like a Spriggan is an animated forest being that can become one with its surroundings and disappear, as well as become or entice any of nature to aid it, from Dryads to wolves and bears and foxes and other beings like Owls and Hawks. She's called the "Wolf Witch" because she transforms into a wolf, but her true form is revealed to be a large ball lightning that races away while laughing maniacally. This makes it much more likely that she isn't a wolf or even a werebeast, but a shapeshifter/possessing/mind-tricks-playing being like a larger greater Will o the wisp. Conan was "raised" pure, with no drugs, no alcohol, nothing that would hinder his performance as a gladiator. After freeing Subotai he consumes Black Lotus from Stygia for the first time, a powerful narcotic and tranquilizer. Subotai is really corrupting Conan, a true friend! Thulsa Doom's snakes are said to be lazy, dangerous, but lazy. They are fed human sacrifices with zero effort, the snakes have been raised by Thorgrim, one of Thulsa Dooms followers and Lieutenants. They never saw the wilderness, and they were exclusively raised to be giant symbols of the cult. This explains why there is none of them at his temple. They are too sluggish to be defenders, too fat and lazy to be of help, and one can simply sidestep them and then behead them, as Conan and Subotai demonstrated. Fat, lazy and helpless creatures that as much as Thulsa Doom and his followers, rely on the amenities of "modern" times, lying in a temple dozing all day and waiting to be fed on time. Max von Sydow was a MASTER of acting. He is the one who invented acting. Well not really, but he was THAT good. Not having heard of him is no crime, but it is indeed a fact that he was a wonderfully accomplished actor by the time of the movie, already. The performance he gives is outstanding and a timeless jewel, as it very well shows the old-time acting, of lengthy monologues, theatrical emphasis on words, and splendid stretching of a monologue until its climax and sudden end. The cult of Doom was a cult, quite obviously, lol. The vibes aint wrong at all. Dooms children though weren't as horrible as Doom himself, quite the contrary. They were like, a flock of self-working missionaries who converted everyone they engaged with by the sheer power of speaking and teaching. They weren't maniacs. They were peaceful druggies and believers, far from Thulsa Doom's very own madness. They were pure, and as such, were able to convert so many people. That's the most dangerous type, the one where the leaders are obscure, and the recruiters and followers are actually peaceful, but obedient. A lot of room for harm there. Akiro the wizard talking of magic is interesting - aside from smaller magic doing, only a few instances of "real" magic are known in-lore, as magic is mostly obscure and takes so long to master that no mortal being can "master" anything close to spell casting and or necromancy. The best is some magic "tricks" and slight manipulation of the environment, but nothing like super powerful necromancy, that is reserved for less than a handful of beings who can create and control that sort of magical power. The jade crest of Doom is very simple - Conan is educated and smart, but not smart enough to overcome his rage. So, he rats himself out. At multiple checkpoints, he is spotted possessing the large JADE crest of Doom, or Set, as it is the insignina of the cult of Set, the snake worshippers, and doesn't realize it. They know that not one single follower has such a tool in their possession, and the one who has one, must have killed or stolen from a very very VERY important Cult Leader, so ofc they instantly link this for them unknown "Brother" to Conan. Sadly you cut out the part where the dark High Priestess of Set approaches Conan who stares into a deep Well, and asks him "What do you see?" to which Conan uses all his experience in reading poetry and writing his own poetry, to anser "Uh... Infinity!", which greatly pleases the High Priestess as she replies with a "good". Infinity means there is no beginning, no end, and it means that your spirit has finally began to fathom what is required to transcend the mortal boundaries and understand creation, and end of creation, as a whole, as there is no end, and no beginning, only the infinity of being, an infinite purpose. They used a carcass of a dead Vulture for the one part where Conan bites, kills, and spits out the birds throat. They stood by with a heap of disinfectant, and watched him closely for the days after, as those birds are carrion eaters, and naturally have a ton of bacteria all in and over them, that does not harm THEM, but anyone human who tries to attack them. Eating a Vulture is a health threat, and another interesting thing is, if you feed a vulture medicine that HELPS a human, it has the adverse effect, as it kills them quickly. Their kidneys are highly sensitive to any compound that isnt of a natural origin. That's why they very quickly die if they feast on animal cadavers or fresh meat like fish, that have been vaccinated, treated with antibiotics or anti inflamatories. Subotai is Hyrkanian. He is mongolian, russian, chinese, somewhere around that area in the real world would be his modern place of origin today. He is a masterful archer as mongols are, and a very good tracker, as mongols and steppe dwellers are. He can track a person through hearsay, and visual cues and landmarks. All it takes is a tiny hint of information. Ofc the Cult has orgies as well as fantastic cannibalistic feasts. After all, it's a powerful cult that appears peaceful and cooperative and friendly at the surface, but is absolutely rotten at the core. The snake arrow is a good example of semi-magic and thaumaturgy at work. An arrow blessed by Set will always find its mark since it is the will of the associated god that it happens. Doom had been highly blessed with powers of Set, as he is even able to shapeshift, so making an auto-aiming arrow or at least aim-assist arrow is not too far fetched and not at all impossible. The explosives were put in there to make the death more dramatic. In fact, the spirits of the mound are being repelled and vanquished by Valeria's purity and her conviction as her soul is finally freed from her body. See of it as them trying to breach the flames and extinguish them or at least try to claim a part of her soul as it leaves, but the very subtle magic of the mound can not penetrate the subtle magic of love. Valeria comes back as a Valkyrie. She is one of the spiritual warrior women of early Norse belief who is the one transferring the most devoted and best warriors to the hall of the gods to live there eternally. That she interferes with Conan is a big break in the law, but her being from what is proto-france and thus proto-gaulic means she most likely believed in such beings as Valkyries too, as she was born in Aquilonia, which would be later and in real life become the Gaulic territories of what would later become "France", in real life of course. A strong influence is taken in the lore from these real life places.

Funny thing. I was watching a behind the scenes of this movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he was talking about how the dogs that chase him were not very well trained, and the injuries he got making the movie. At the end of it they had a blooper where one of the boom mics hit him in the head as he was talking about the movie, and he said something like "even in the making of Conan I get injured!" :D

*Conan’s freedom from slavery DOES come out of nowhere, story wise speaking at least. However, a lot of people don’t understand that it is a real thing that slaves can be released because they often have the crueler, more recent example of how US plantation owners and others around the world at those times would keep **_generations_** of people in slavery. But in ancient times, many cultures, like the Romans for example, had laws and traditions that dictated that a slave was kept in servitude only for a certain number of years, regardless of whether they were bought from a slave trader or acquired through war and plunder. So once that time limit had been reached, the master had no choice but to free said slave or face the legal/social consequences of going against the law; and of course, a master could always free a slave ahead of the time limit if they so felt like it. So while it is not explained in the movie (which is the writer’s/Director’s failure) it can be assumed that in the world of Conan, freeing a slave after a certain time is either an obligation or a prerogative of the masters (Showing that either in fictional worlds or our ancient one: Humans have/had more **_humanity_** than many so-called **_modern, civilized_** people!)*

The narration & Schwarzenegger's lack of dialog are related. Schwarzenegger's command of the English language was not good enough to do the entire film. The narration took the burden off his shoulders & allowed him less lines. & 'Bangs' (guess/probability 80%) they went to props dept. & all the long haired wigs had bangs, the director was told it was $700 per wig if he wanted new wigs made for the cast. Budget Director said: no way in hell are you buying new wigs. They're gonna have bangs, learn to live with it.

The tone is a little campy but overall I think it matches the comics which came after the original short stories. There is no answer to what happened to the other children but the most likely answers from logic are dies on the wheel, were sold as inferior slaves, and sacrificed or just killed as useless.
