There were 13 Bluesmobiles which were purchased from the California Highway Patrol. Landis purchased 60 retired Chicago PD cars for $400.00 each. After crash scenes, the damaged cars were taken to a 24-hour repair garage so as to be crashed again. The mall was vacant. It was refurbished and restocked for the film. (The Toys R Us customer that asked if they had a Miss Piggy is a reference to Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy, being the jail official that inventoried and returned Jake's belongings.) The scene crashing through the Daley Center cost $3.5 million (1979 dollars).

1:01 - Looks like you're watching the extended cut. It's easy to tell from the picture quality which scenes were added back in. It doesn't add anything essential to the film, but it DOES expand upon a few moments that were less clear in the original cut. 1:54 - The first of MANY cameos in this movie. The clerk is Frank Oz, legendary director and Muppeteer. 5:54 - That's Cathleen Freeman. She was EVERYWHERE in the 80s and 90s. And no, she wasn't. 7:20 - Cab Calloway. Legendary big band leader. 8:13 - That IS James Brown. Also, one of the choir women is Chaka Kahn. 9:57 - Given the camera staging, I wouldn't be surprised if they used a double here, but John Belushi could ACTUALLY do flips like that. He did them in the original SNL sketches. 13:50 - The real cost? Next to nothing. This mall was already scheduled for demolition when they filmed the movie. 19:44 - It's worth mentioning at this point that most of the members of the Blues Brothers Band are members of the SNL house band playing fictionalized versions of themselves. 21:45 - That's Paul Reubens, better known as Peewee Herman. 24:03 - John Lee Hooker, Blues LEGEND. 26:06 - Took ya long enough. 28:12 - Ray scared that kid so hard he ran all the way to LA, where he'd get a job driving Bruce Willis to a Christmas party. 37:29 - It's a speaker from an old air-raid/public alert siren. 38:30 - This is Twiggy, one of the first supermodels. At the time of the movie, she was widely considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. 39:29 - Minnie the Moocher is Cab Calloway's signature song. He was so famous for singing it in his day that Fleischer Studios rotoscoped his performance into a Betty Boop cartoon: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3fLfqh8etl8npY 41:31 - This intro is directly inspired by the introduction to the Blues Brothers first official appearance on SNL: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIW6eWR8mdCdpdk 52:19- Last great cameo of the movie: a very young Steven Spielberg.

In Chicago, It's Huge. We know every bit of the movie , when , where, who. John Candy, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, all got their start on the Second City Stage in Chicago. it's one of the reasons they did the film here but honestly this is a Saturday Night Live Skit come to life. The TV show started about 5-6 years before that. There are so many local tropes and inside things in this film from the time. The incomplete Isenhower Expressway Ramp the Nazi's fly off. Making sure to turn the car lights on when going into the underground because of the huge sign that was there. When they have to pull over in the middle of the expressway there was a weird run nobody could figure out why it was designed that way. The Long Elevator ride in the skyscrapers., The PIcaso. They made them jokes in the movie because we were making fun of them in real life at the time.

In the fall of 1979 and early winter of 1980, the production took over the city of Chicago, its recording studios, several suburbs close to the city, nearby towns like Joliet (the prison there closed in 2002) and a few scenes were shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (about 2 hours north of Chicago.) Every available dancer, voice or acting extra in Chicago was excited to be part of the production. Some scenes were shot in California but the majority of the film was filmed in Chicago. Because Belushi was from Chicago and Ackroyd had spent time living there, the movie is filled with in-jokes and references about the city. The Nazi rally is based on a real case of Nazis who wanted to march in the suburb of Skokie, which had a significant population that were Holocaust survivors, and the case went to the US Supreme Court to test “freedom of speech.”

The older gentleman who sang Minnie the Moocher was Cab Calloway, another famous blues musician.

As for the cost of the scene driving through the mall, it was all up front. They spent upwards of $40,000 to partially refurbish an abandoned mall. There had been a 'Toy-R-Us' at that spot, they just spruced it up. They brought in all the stuff to stock the storefronts. They also set the record with the destruction of 104 cars, they upped it in the sequel by 1 with 105. In this film, 64 of them were retired Chicago police cars. The current Guinness world record for 'most cars wrecked in a single film' is 'Transformers-Dark of the Moon' with 562! Damn

24:03 that is legendary blues singer John Lee Hooker. This song is boom boom boom. Another one he is famous for is one scotch, one bourbon and one beer. It is a cover but his version is probably the most famous.

A lot of artists in this movie really were left behind by disco and punk, new wave and punk music. They gained a whole new audience from this film. They were able to do live shows to make money and put out new music of rerelease their classic songs. They were all paid very well to be in the movie when some of them were all but ignored by 1980. Also in Ray's music shop the young man Ray shoots at is rumored to be a young Jimi Hendrix who could not afford to buy a guitar.

John Belushi: Animal House (1978) Animal House is a must ! Yes John & Dan are singing and Dan plays the harmonica. They're a real band and even had a few concert dates plus of course on...... Saturday Night Live where it all started.
