Here we are, arriving at Coraline. I've seen so many comments about this being the nightmare fuel of many children. After finally getting a chance to sit down with this one... I can see why. We're going to dive into a world that has a dark secret and see how we make it through this great escape. Grab some snacks, grab a loved one (not like that), and sit down to relax... let's get this reaction started!

yeah and that's without going into full details like how all the characters combined can have up to 280,000 expressions and how 90-100 shots for each frame takes a week to do. 450 people worked on this movie and over half alone were just technicians and designers. about 35 were the animators and 1 person worked on specifically to knit the clothing, with thread and needles being as thin as human hair! a lot of work goes into stop-motion, years of patience and effort, and most movies rarely get enough money to pay it all back. the budget for this movie was $60 million dollors and got back $124.6 million. that's why i feel bad when i don't have the time or money to see these types of films, even when i am a huge fan of Stop-Motion/Claymation.

Also I actually love the portrayal of the parents in this because it's absolutely shown from the perspective of a child. To coraline they're disinterested, mean etc, but if you really look, they're overworked, in the middle of a big move, and her mum is recovering from a serious injury to her neck after a car accident. But as a kid you don't entirely understand that, and it doesn't seem fair. It's a really common dysfunction in families with parents who work a lot and it gives coraline a believable impulse to favor the "better world" where she's getting the attention she craves.

This!! A scene that always really pulls at my heartstrings (and I'm pretty sure a lot of people feel the same way) is the one towards the end of the movie when Coraline's mom gifts her the gloves she had asked for. There's something really heartbreaking about a parent wanting to give something to their child but not being able to, and the child not understanding it. The scene at the store where she tells Coraline to put the gloves back, I can't help but feel for her as a parent who is probably really unsure about the future of the family's financial situation. Of course the rough tone she uses with Coraline isn't fair, but we're talking about a kid who just doesn't understand the position her parents are in at the moment - in her eyes, it's just another injustice, and the movie doesn't provide justification for the parents' side in these situations because it's not supposed to, we're supposed to empathize with Coraline, and you described perfectly why that works. It's hard to just flat out say in the middle of the store that you "can't afford the gloves". That you're struggling figure out how you're even going to afford the mandatory school uniform. It's really touching that as soon as the mother knows things are going to begin stabilizing for them, the first thing she does, before even going home, is stop by the store and get her kid the pair of gloves she so desperately wanted (knowing full well her kid was struggling from all the stress and changes too) and that she had seemingly not even spared a glance towards.

I remember being in a tough situation where it was hard to know what was going to happen next and I didn't want to worry my kids, but I did want them to understand life and where it may be hard for me to give them the time I'd love to. My solution was a bit different from here, but I understand that these stresses pile up. I explained the hardships and what we were going through with my kids so that it always remained clear what I was going through and how I find my solutions. They may or may not understand it completely, but they never were upset when work took priority.

@@TavareIsUnique My parents had a more similar approach to yours as well ^^ they were always upfront and honest with us, and it was the absolute right thing to do, because it made us more understanding. We knew they felt bad when they told us they couldn't buy us something at the moment, and we knew that sometimes when they'd say "we can buy it for you!", they would then struggle quietly through the rest of the month. It made me appreciate my things, and it made me learn to be conscious about spending my pocket money, which turned into savings that I used as a teen to pay for my own stuff (phones, clothes, gifts for friends, hangouts with friends, etc.). Certain little ways they'd find to treat us stuck with me, too. I always appreciated it when my mom would think of me while grocery shopping, and brought home my favorite snack; so whenever I went out to buy snacks with friends, I would also bring her one she liked. She'd always tell me not to "waste my money on her", but she'd always smile as she ate, and I understood that feeling well because I felt it when she did the same for me ^^ my country is not really vocal when it comes to affection, so to this day that remains one of the small but meaningful ways we show our love for each other - to say "I thought of you today, and wanted to do something to brighten your day". They didn't always want to make us worry, so there were still times when they'd snap at us after work, because things were more stressful or uncertain, and at those times we didn't connect it to money or stress, we only thought it was unfair ^^' I'm sure they thought it was unfair too. I know they did the best they could, and whenever I think back on the times they seemed apologetic, I hope they never feel like they didn't do enough. They still do to this day, and nothing makes me happier than the fact that I'm old enough now for us to be able to lean on each other without shame. I don't know if things would've been the same had they not been open with us from the start ^^ I think honesty and communication are always a good bet in any relationship.

Fun fact: the mushroom circle Coraline stepped on in the start of the movie is actually called a fairy circle. Fairy circle's are bad luck and you might even die just by stepping on it, some people say its a portal to the fairy world, and take note that fairies in real life are NOT friendly. So maybe all that happened in the movie is all because Coraline stepped on a fairy circle.

Beldam was once human, she owned the Pink Palace. Beldam built the house 150 years ago, the garden in the real world has her real face, she fell into the well and ended up in the "Other World". She ended up becoming a kind of entity, absorbing all of his "magic" power and needed souls to stay alive, children were easier to attract. The shape of the well, when you look into it, is very reminiscent of the portal you had in the little door inside the house. Wybie says the well is so deep, it gives to see the stars at noon, down there; in the "Other World" everything is always at night, so as night is the time when there are stars in the sky, Wybie looks down even in the daytime, he can see the stars of the “Other world”.

If you listen to the other Father's song, you can interpret it deeper: Makin' up a song about Coraline She's a peach, she's a doll, she's a pal of mine She's as cute as a button In the eyes of everyone who ever laid their eyes on Cor-a-line When she comes around exploring Mom and I will never, ever make it boring Our eyes will be on Coraline He is on his own way trying to warn her about the other Mother. "Cute as a button" referring to the sowing buttons in the eyes, "a pal of mine" referring to that he is on her side and even gave up himself by giving her the eye of one of the children, the last part is simply that where they always made it fun for her in this other world unlike her real mom and dad. Finally that last line, the other mother uses the doll to spy on her so "our eyes" will always be watching as long as the doll is there. Creepy. I know. The book is even creepier and only got published because the editor read it to their daughter and the daughter lied that it wasn't scary.

@@lady_raineidv9297 I've been interested in porcelain dolls since one of my grandma's gave a little one of Snow-White when I was like 4 or 5 years old (that I still have to this day in my collection). I've always liked the look of them that's why she gave me that one 😅 and of course there are always risks when cleaning them (especially the really old ones...I have one that belonged to my great-grandmother and I usually buy dolls at the antique fair - so they're old) but they're not that delicate that one scrub will fracture or break for example a hand. You can vigorously clean (with the right products of course) them. You just have to be mindful of the paint and that it's a fragile object. I personally find it harder to clean the hair. When you buy really old ones, sometimes their hair is completely matted, full of dust and other substances you would rather not know 😆 PS: sry for the long reply 😅

The theories that are out there for this movie are super dark Cool movie One of the cool tidbits I like is the doll's placement in the chair is the same as where the other mother watched coraline go to sleep. The theories out there are that the cat is another immortal that is connected to the spider and the dimension they inhabit/can move between is an entity that needs a host to lure people into for their energy. Some theories are that the cat is a father of one of the kids that was taken and another is that he is part of the entity that is the other world. The spider theories are that she once had a child that died hence the portraits of kids. Others are that she was the original owner of the house, finding the well which is belived to be the other entrance to the otherworld so when coraline tossed the key in the well the otherworld got the key back. The fairy circle around the well suggests the well is magic. Its possible that coraline is to be the next host of the otherworld forced to continue the work if the otherworld has the key back.

some things I thought I would bring up! the 3 soul children are all dressed from different eras so you can really see how long the beldame (aka other mother) has been doing this. the 2 sisters that live under coraline gave her a stone commonly used in scottish folklore to see things in the fairy realm (in scottish mythology where fairies originate from, fairies are more like beldames instead of cute little pixies) lastly, behind coraline during the feast scene the lightning strikes into the shape of the other mothers hand.

The secret is TO LOVE your dolls. I was never scared of dolls when I was a kid. Even porcelain dolls. I gave them so much love that whenever someone suggested they could be evil I couldn't believe it. I mean I've always loved them and I knew they loved me the same way. So Why was I going to be in danger anyways? In fact they could kept me safe ^^U. Yes I was that kind of freak child XD

Those of us who grew up on Rankin/Bass (Rudolph etc.) have been glad to see the Laika company keeping stop-motion alive. And yes, it's HUGE work, it generally takes literally all day just to film a few seconds. They also did _ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings_ (amazing visuals in that one), and _The Missing Link._ I was recently able to watch Wes Anderson's _Isle of Dogs_ (awesome story) and _The Fantastic Mr. Fox,_ and recommend checking them out sometime too if you dig this style of animation. Then there's Aardman Animation in England, probably best known for their Wallace and Gromit shorts and a couple films, but I think you'd like _Chicken Run_ from around 2000. More recently they've been doing _The Pirates!_ and _Shaun the Sheep,_ I haven't seen much of that stuff yet but heard they're quite enjoyable by all ages. As far as nightmare fuel when I was a kid, that'd be _Watership Down,_ the Child Catcher from _Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,_ and most of _Willy Wonka._

The Book, which this movie is based from is also very good! There is no Wbyborn/Wybie, since he was added so there wouldn't be awkward silent scenes of Coraline walking aro uh and and talking to herself. It works in books but not so much in movies most of the times. Another fun fact: The Ciraline in the book was immediately suspicious of that other world. While movie Coraline went from cautious, to happy and trusting, to scared, book coraline never trusted the other world for a second. She was kinda a boss.

You’re right, I’m glad you caught on. Coraline’s folks aren’t so bad, they were just going through a lot of stress moving into the Pink Palace with barely any money left to live. They were working real hard on that gardening catalog so they could finally have an income going on. A similar thing happened to me and my family when we moved to Texas. We barely had the money to pay rent for a week at a motel, my dad was looking for work and we were at the end of our rope. A miracle happened and we found someone looking for a family like us to move into their old house. My dad found a job and things began looking up from there.

Yaaaaayyyy yay yay yay!! I absolutely love watching people react to *this* one 😆 My favorite thing about YOUR reactions to slightly creepy kids movies (Harry Potter included) is that as an adult and a parent, you're always going "There's no warning signs around that, somebody could fall" and "Where are the adults??" and "Why are these children--no, nope, unacceptable, this is *not safe"* 😂😂 In this one, that manifested as you being the ONLY REACTOR I'VE EVER SEEN to really understand why she does stuff to be purposefully irritating -- because she's lonely, and like any child, she needs attention from her parents! And hers happen to be emotionally neglectful and a little verbally abusive -- to her and each other. Most of the reactors I watch aren't parents, so they don't understand those things the same way. I appreciate you for that.

The book has almost a completely different vibe. Wybie isnt there, the door is a large door that Coraline says has a very short walk and feels like its alive, and when she wants to go home she has to go back through the door and it's longer when walking back. Over all both the book and the movie are completely interesting and your reaction was so great. Keep it up 😊👍

I'm only at the beginning of the video (I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE IT POP UP!!), but yes, yes it can be that tedious to make dolls x'D if you happen to like the process, though, it only feels like a "chore" on bad/low energy days; it's actually very relaxing to have a hobby that keeps your hands busy while you watch or listen to your favorite shows/movies/books/songs/etc. If you happen to have a busy brain, it really helps slow it down so you can ACTUALLY enjoy the show without getting distracted or antsy. And the sense of accomplishment when you're done is wonderful ^^ I'm actually making one right now while watching this, so thanks for the company! That doll-making scene is definitely meant to be unsettling to watch, but it's also oddly satisfying xD the humming always gets stuck in my head.
