Apparently before this story was published, the publishers were worried it's too scary for kids. They got a little girl, forgot whose kid she was, and she read the story. Told her mom it wasn't scary and so Coraline got published.. Years later at a book signing, Neil gaiman met that girl as a grown up. And she told him that she lied. I love that story.

The whistling sign in the two ladies home is because that’s how crew workers in the theater used to communicate to each other about set pieces coming in and out, dangers happening, etc! So no one else was supposed to whistle incase it was misinterpreted by a crew member and things were moved to early!

It's also to do with the book as in the book she whistles when she was scared and that's when she sees the other father in the basement area and he looks completely different and is described as the texture of bread dough since the other mother made him and then didn't need him anymore

If you were paying attention to the Other Father's song, you'd realize that it was actually a warning. Making up a song about coraline. She's a peach (something to eat) she's a doll (how the other mother spies on her) she's a pal of mine (he actually cares about her.) She's a cute as a button to everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline (buttons for eyes) When she comes exploring, mom and I will never ever make it boring (how the other mother plans to lure her into staying) Our eyes will be on coraline (sewing the buttons into her eyes) And then the pause right at the end, before he pulls away, he looks right at the camera like he's saying, "Did you get that?"

I just noticed when Coraline falls asleep in the other world for the first time, the Other Mother is sitting in the same chair where the doll is sitting. I feel like that was probably deliberate. I love the little touches in this movie.

"So sharp you won't feel a thing!" Everyone having children knows this is NOT what you must say to reassure a child by pointing out pain before a seringue injection. The other father is obviously pointing out the fact it is actually going to hurt and they want to put needles in her eyes, and the other mother catches on and hits him.

"I could see kids being freaked the fuck out for life with this." Yep! I was five when this movie came out and my mom and her girlfriend took me to see it in theatres and we had to leave once the parents got taken because I started crying. Had nightmares that night, and what's worse! In my bedroom at the time was a little door just like the movie in the back of my closet! Couldn't look in that direction of the room at nights the entire rest of the time we lived there! Ended up moving a year or so later, but that shit fucked me up! Only rewatched it when I was 16, and it's a great movie but it does still sometimes give me the creepy crawlies.

Yeah, tbh I hate when ppl bring up the story about "he read it to his daughter to prove it wasn't too scary to kids and she later admitted she was scared but didn't tell him cause she wanted to know how it ended" story bc if she still wanted to know how it ended enough to continue on with it then it obviously wasn't too scary for her 😂

Aww, Coraline's parents are going through a hard time. It's been less than a week of them being stressed about this major deadline, which is their livelihood for a while. They just moved into a crumbling wreck of an apartment/unit and haven't been able to unpack much - they can barely afford food or new clothes until they get paid for this big book project. Coraline's mum is also injured after an accident (she is wearing a neck brace) which I'm sure doesn't make anyone feel like they are in a good mood, plus that might have also been a problem with money (depending on the healthcare in this universe lol). We are seeing Coraline's parents from her perspective, so because she is bored and alone in a new place for a few days, it suddenly seems like they are practically villains, when in reality they are tired and stressed for a little bit and after the deadline, they return to normal. Because we follow Coraline’s perspective, Coraline’s parents aren’t really developed as people early on in the story. You can also see in a few photos that Coraline recently had brown hair, so dying it blue happened around the time of the move - I always thought that was a trade-off for having to move to a new place, like 'you can dye your hair to boost your mood about this big move'. At the start, Coraline believes that her mother and father exist to provide for her, entertain her, and, in effect, worship her - this is why the Other Mother is able to easily sway Coraline. Coraline doesn’t seem to take their work or responsibilities seriously and pesters them constantly when she grows bored of exploring or is kept inside by the weather. In Coraline’s view, her parents are uninteresting and exist only to move her around the country; dictate what she eats and what she wears; and impose rules, regulations, and chores upon her life. Over the course of the story, though, she comes to realize that just as parents have an obligation to keep their children safe and healthy, children have certain obligations to their parents, as well. Coraline learns, through her dealings with the Other Mother, that when parents behave like children and don’t respect the boundaries and demands of parenthood, even the difficult parts, things are just not quite right. Ultimately, Coraline realizes that if her real parents gave her everything she asked for whenever she asked for it, doted on her constantly, and never gave her any rules or responsibilities, she’d be unhappy. What she wants, she’s learned, is the relationship she had with her parents before - not perfect, but built on a strong foundation of love, respect, and the pursuit of what’s right (even when what’s right isn’t what’s easy).

There are so many amazing little details in this movie that lovers of it obsess over, including me. My favorite is the cake the other mother gives Coraline the first night she's there says "Welcome Home" in cursive, but the o in home has a double loop because the double loop signifies the person who wrote it is lying. So the O in welcome has a single loop which means Coraline is welcome there, but it's certainly not her home.

It’s not a Halloween film, but it is a horror film, and it honestly is such a slay but very very weird… ✨mother! ✨. It’s a 2017 film with Jennifer Lawrence, and it’s honestly so good. It is unlike any other film I’ve seen because it’s like 2 hours long, but the first 2/3 of the film is like nothing happens, then it’s exponential up until the end 🫣.I would love to see brad watch it, and honestly more people should watch it because it’s so good. You do need to read up on the themes and metaphors that the film represents bc it makes so much more sense once you watch it. 💛💛💛

there’s a theory that coraline actually returned the key to the beldam when she threw it into the well because the moon in the other world looks eerily similar and wybie said that if you fell into it and looked up you’d see a sea full of stars (the other world is stuck at night)

I took my little brother to this when it came out. So many kids were crying and left with their parents. My brother was 7 in my lap peeking through his hands at times 😂 They cut so many f#cked up elements from the book and it was still scary

Please watch the horror comedy "What we do in the shadows"! It's very funny, but definitely Halloween themed as it is about a bunch of Vampires living together and the struggles they encounter in their lives... 😁

I never understood why they changed the setting of the film to America… IT’S STOP ANIMATION! It didn’t need to be changed, why not leave it based in the UK. It’s based on an actual pink 3 flat house in England that Neil Gaiman lived in as a child.
