First Time Watching "Doctor Who" Season 1 Episode 12 Reaction | Bad Wolf

They managed to get the same actual presenters to voice over the droids for the reality shows, which were instantly recognisable to practically everyone in the UK in 2005. Davina McCall hosts Big Brother UK, Ann Robinson hosts The Weakest Link, Trinny and Suzanna hosted What Not To Wear. They even got permission to use the Big Brother theme music as it was on Channel 4 not BBC (hence Davina Droid says "you are live on Channel fortyfour hundred, please do not swear", which is almost exactly what she'd say on the live Big Brother evictions). She would also say "I'm coming to get you" before someone was evicted, which is what The Doctor says to Rose at the end of the episode. Davina McCall was also in The Church on Ruby Road playing herself, she now actually does host a show about people tracing their parents and lost families.

Bad Wolf easter eggs: Ep 2 The Moxx of Balhoun (little blue guy in the chair) is overheard talking about a "Bad Wolf scenario". Ep 3 Gwyneth the maid says "the things you've seen... the darkness, the big bad wolf" to Rose. Ep 4 and 5: Bad Wolf is graffitied on the TARDIS Ep 6 VanStatten's helicopter has the call-sign Bad Wolf 1 and an air traffic control voice says "Bad Wolf One descending" as it lands. Ep 7 On a monitor with the station logo BadWolfTV with the chyron announcing Face of Boe is pregnant Ep 8 There is Bad Wolf graffitied on one of the smiley face posters when The Doctor and Rose are watching Pete Tyler being hit by the car Ep 9 and 10 The bomb Captain Jack is riding at the end has "Schlechter Wolf" stencilled on the side, which in German technically means 'bad' as in low-quality so I guess someone was using google translate, 'cos this means more like "rubbish wolf" or "crappy wolf". Ep 11 The reactor is called the Blaidd Drwg project, Blaidd Drwg really does mean Bad Wolf in Welsh.

They’re in a bookcase w/28 Big Finish short trip hardbacks - didn’t buy volume 29, as that was a best of with no new content, and those are alongside the Panini graphic novel reprints, Decide Your Destiny/Find Your Fate/Choose the Future, & Darksmith Legacy books. @@DoctorWhoBookClub That's really cool. I got a few of the Telos Deluxe too, but not all, mostly standards. I have most of the Panini stuff and some of the others. I didn't get the BF Short Trips books because I was poor at the time and they were 4 times the price of the VA or EDA etc. Probably out of print now. I did get every Big Finish audio now that I have money, on CD (thank you ebay for the early ones). Being an obsessive WHOvian is expensive though! OMG!! I spent like $700 for 2024 preorders and NOW they tell me they're doing an audio for Goth Opera! 😅

At the time of production the BBC only had three full scale Daleks to use. Whenever there’s more on screen they used a combination of mirrors, CGI, and model toys for long shots.

The quote from the Roman Empire was referring to "panem et circenses" - bread and the circus (the arena) - keep the public fed and entertained and they won't rise up. Panem from that phrase was then reused as the name of the society in The Hunger Games... a world where the people watched arena-like combat for entertainment. I do enjoy when authors name things sneakily.

Circenses kind of metaphorically extends to all forms of entertainment at that time, which would include gladiatorial combat, but that's not literally what the word means. Literally it refers to venues that were used for chariot races. The Latin word for the arena was "arena".

I have zero interest in so-called reality TV, but one beauty of this episode is that it works whether you're like me or if you actually love that stuff (and the writer was a big fan of those shows). Another thing I like about this episode is the way it switches tone and (apparent) theme more than once: initially we think it's going to be a light-hearted romp, then it seems like it's going to be a more biting satire, and then we get a glimpse of something very different. I also think that by starting light the reveal at the end has more impact... and that's before we get into the real meat of the finale with Episode 13. The background "heartbeat" sound on the Dalek spaceship that we hear near the end of this episode is the same sound used in the background of the first Dalek stories all the way back in the 1960s. The female producer (the one the Doctor says has lost the right to talk to him) played an unrelated role in one of the last "classic" stories before the original "Doctor Who" was cancelled by the BBC in 1989. I believe there was also an actor in Episode 11 who played an unrelated role in one of the classic stories. The BBC suppressed this episode's title until shortly before it was first broadcast. All the fans then speculated what would be revealed... of course we learned nothing! Maybe in Episode 13?

Episode two: The Moxx of Balhoon is heard talking about "a bad wolf situation" Episode three: Gwynneth reads Rose's mind and panics about seeing "the big bad wolf" Episode four/five: Kid graffitis bad wolf on the TARDIS Episode six - Van Statten's helicopter lands to the message "Bad Wolf One descending" Episode seven - can't recall this one, I suspect it may have been on a poster on a wall where Rose was standing Episode eight/nine - On the "Doctor Strangelove" bomb that Jack is riding is the phrase "Schlechter Wulf" Episode ten - the name of the nuclear program And here we are :D Very well laid out. I also suspect the introduction of Lynda (with a Y) as such a charming character that the Doctor seems to like was to set up the "death" of Rose, so that audiences would buy the disintegration a little more, thinking that a new companion was in the wings. Great series.

It's the second last episode of the season so we really feel like nobody's safe.

It's no loss if you don't watch the mini- sodes you still won't lose the connection of the story it's just a fan thing really. The only future mini-sode worth checking out is "TimeCrash" and "The Night of the Doctor" but that's for much later on.

The time lords were one of the oldest and most powerful species in the universe, they took a path of non intervention.. they used their power just to study and learn...the doctor found this boring and "stole " a tardis to have adventures.... the daleks became so strong they felt they needed to intervene, they were just about the only race that had a chance.... you will see more of this in seasons to come

A bemusing thing is that the inclusion of the game shows was a spoof showing how vapid and horrible they were, which was a surprise to Russell T.Davis, who was a fan of these shows and put them in as a tribute. He also admitted at the time it would make this episode a massive period peice.

@@cryptozoomauler5505 Reality TV in general no, but the specific shows featured in the episode, well Big Brother still exists but nowhere near the level of prominence it had in 2005, the Weakest Link did nake a comback recently, but What not to Wear and several of the shows that were just referenced are long gone, it doesn't nescisarily anchor the episode in thr time period it was made in, but certainly newer fans could be forgiven for mistaking them for made up shows for the episode, as opposed to references to actual TV shows that were on at the time.

@@medafan53 nobody asked me but here's a fun fact: did you know Big brother is bigger in Brazil now than it ever was at its inception years ago? It got to the point where they get famous people along with strangers to be contestants and the contestants have teams to manage their social media while they're inside. They start the show with like a few hundred followers at most and finish the show with millions of followers and go on to become tv presenters, actors, popstars, etc. It's actually insane. I lived in Spain as well and BB Spain still exists but is like you say, kind of an "abandoned" show, but BBB is huge and as a brazilian I hate that

He always introduces himself as The Doctor but the credits name him as Doctor Who in this season and most of the classic era. So it's an understandable confusion. In the classic series he's referred to as Doctor Who by another character only once as his name (that I can remember, I could be wrong), rather than the never funny "Doctor? Doctor who?" jokes they occasionally shoehorn in.

Yes, it doesn't help that Eccleston was credited as "Doctor Who," but things have been refined since then.

@@HuntingViolets according to RTD, Eccleston asked to be credited as 'Doctor Who' because it was like the classic series (well, the first 18 or 19 years) but Tennant wanted to be credited as 'The Doctor' as he was a Davison fan (foreshadowing) and it stuck there ever since.

i remember 1 think from real world. i think it was from "Teck" or something? some white girl asked him why he talked like "that" which i dont know the proper term for. like gansta or from the hood.... his response just stuck with me all these years he was like "because thats how society EXPECTS me to talk..." and i was like wow.... i mean if thats really why then isnt that doing a disservice to the black community? like for the most part we all have better education these days. so speaking properly or eloquent puts you on the same level as your peers (being humanity) as where improper speech was like signs of being uneducated like back when the slavers werent allowed to learn how to read or write or even speak proper english. i personally always viewed it as being like an accent thing like if you were from the south you kinda had that southern drawl or whatever. but to hear him say it was an intentional choice on his part to speak like a "thug" that hurt

I love this Penultimate episode! Doctor WHO almost always does good finale lead-ins. The best is Series 9's Penultimate. Everyone pretty much agrees, that's been voted best episode many times over of the entire show, so something Else for you to look forward to! Talking about Reality TV reminds me of Chappelle Show making fun of The Real World, that was hilarious! Dude's dad got knifed rapid fire!! 🤣 I miss when Dave wanted everyone to laugh and not just right wing people to applaud.🥱😒 Anyways, Looking forward to you all seeing the finale and the Christmas Special!😆
