Storyline
Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a 1982 American coming-of-age comedy film directed by Amy Heckerling (in her feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Cameron Crowe, based on his 1981 book Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story, and starring Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, Brian Backer, Robert Romanus, and Ray Walston. Crowe went undercover at Clairemont High School in San Diego and wrote about his experiences.[3]
The film chronicles a school year in the lives of sophomores Stacy Hamilton and Mark Ratner and their older friends Linda Barrett and Mike Damone, both of whom believe themselves wiser in the ways of romance than their younger counterparts. The ensemble cast of characters form two subplots with Jeff Spicoli, a perpetually stoned surfer facing off against history teacher Mr. Hand, and Stacy's older brother Brad, a popular senior who works in entry-level jobs to pay for his car and ponders ending his two-year relationship with his girlfriend Lisa.
In addition to Penn, Reinhold, Cates, and Leigh, the film marks early appearances by several actors who later became stars, including Nicolas Cage, Eric Stoltz, Forest Whitaker, and Anthony Edwards (the first two in their feature film debuts).
In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[4][5]

great movie + reaction! the students were sniiffing the tests because of the 'ditto' fluid used to print tests and handouts by a hand-cranked printing press the teachers would use (Ditto machine). IIRC, kinda a blueberry-alcohol smell, and would give you a very TINY buzz/high for a second.

To answer your question Carrington, Yes, Fast Times at Ridgemount High is the same mall as in the movie Commando. That mall was the Sherman Oaks Galleria located in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. That mall was also featured in a few other movies including, Valley Girl, Night of the Comet and Terminator Judgement Day. It was opened in 1980 and closed in 1999. It was rebuilt and opened again in 2002 as a mixed used structure which included office space and restaurants. Just a side note, the opening scene of the entrance of a mall was the Santa Monica mall located across town. It too was demolished.

the difference between this and "dazed and confused" is that "fast times" came out around the time the movie was set in. "dazed and confused" came out about 20 years after the time it depicted,so "fast times" felt more realistic imo. the scene with phoebe cates coming out of the pool is one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. i saw the movie at a drive in theater in 1982 at a time when the movie audio could be played through your car stereo,so with all those great songs playing everyone had the sound cranked up to 11. i was walking back from the snack bar when the pool scene came on. as phoebe was taking off her top i was surrounded by the cars' song "moving in stereo" with phoebe's image on a 40 foot screen in front of me. i'll never forget it.

This and Dazed and Confused, directed by Richard Linklater, were such accurate depictions of teen angst and coming of age at a certain time. They also both had great soundtracks:)

I'm the same age as Phoebe Cates so needless to say I was in love with her also! Jennifer Jason Leigh is gorgeous also! Back in vhs days all the videos of this movie had imperfections at the spot where Phoebe takes her top off from guys pausing the tape at that point! Thanks for the reactions, always entertaining!

Here is a little taste of dopamine. (The first ones free.)😉 As always, awesome edits and commentary. And yes, the Phoebe Cates scene with The Cars “Moving in Stereo”… Every time I hear that song, I think of that scene. Every time…. And now you will too. Still love her character in “Gremlins” the best. Her sense of humor in that film was top tier. Cheers

Fun fact: when the website Mr. Skin did their first ranking of the 100 greatest nude scenes in movie history, Phoebe Cates' pool scene made #1! In a more recent ranking, it fell out of #1 but stayed in the top 20.

When they handed out the paper, the kids sniffed the paper because the ink they used smelled really good, some said you could get high but I never did. It smelled like grape flavor. I say grape flavor because grape flavor tastes nothing like a grape and gas it’s own smell.

That gorgeous lady playing the role of Mrs. Vargas, was Lana Clarkson. The actress who was murdered by Phil Spector in 2003. If you ever get a chance to see the TV edit of this movie, check it out. They replaced most of the sex and drugs scenes with scenes that were not used in the theatrical release that show more of the kids' personalities, like Spicoli lying to his friends about his beef with Mr. Hand, and meeting Mick Jagger. The deleted scene in the abortion clinic is an eye opener, that gives even more to that part of the story..

This movie is so tame nowadays. But back in the day it came out it was really controversial. When the students were sniffing that paper, those sheets weren't printed from a photo copier but were mimeographs. The ink on the paper smelled really good.

Ha! Mate! Watching you gush over Pheobe Cates, while seeing that you're oblivious to what lies ahead. Brilliant! No worries! You are definitely not alone in your feelings on this. Check out a movie that she did about this same time called "Paradise", which was basically a rip off of "The Blue Lagoon". I don't think she acts anymore, or has for a very long time. She married the great actor Kevin Kline, and I guess just became a mother? Her father and uncle were producer/directors in early TV, and theater at that time, and were around and involved in a lot of the history of that period, and then also movies. There's a movie "Quiz Show" about one of the controveries from that time, if you're interested. Her uncle Gil Cates, had famously produced and directed The Academy Awards show like 13 to 15 different times, and was responsible for all the times Billy Crystal hosted, but that was probably way before your time, and you have no idea what I'm talking about.

I went to high school 1976-1979 about three blocks from Clairemont HS in San Diego (the original 'Ridgemont High' visited by the director Cameron Crowe). This film was made closer to the time than 'Dazed and Confused' and so is not as retrospective; 'Dazed' actually 'feels' more accurate to me -- not quite as fashiony as this one. There are some accurate bits, though. I could name at least three students who were clones of the Jeff Spicoli surfer character. Sean Penn based on the character on someone he actually knew. Crowe's 'Almost Famous' is also very good about San Diego in the period.

People put the emphasis on "Fast" and "High". FAST Times at Ridgemont HIGH. The reason why they were sniffing their paper in class was because there was an old method of copying that involved a solvent that could get you high, sort of like old marker pens. The baseball "pit" is called a "dugout".
