This movie will always be a classic. It is so well-written and acted. Numerous well-known actors had early roles in this film: Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Vincent Schiavelli, Brad Dourif (who played Billy Bibbit and went on to roles as "Doc Cochran" in Deadwood and "Grima Wormtongue" in Lord of the Rings, the voice of "Chucky"), etc. Louise Fletcher's performance as Nurse Ratched was so incredible (she won an Oscar for Best Actress) that it apparently had a large effect on the types of roles she was offered thereafter. There's a good movie from 1989 called The Dream Team which is similar to this but in the light comedy/drama genre, also featuring Christopher Lloyd as an inmate, Michael Keaton as the McMurphy-type character, and they go for a day trip to the ball game

Wow, at the moment you said this movie was a roller coaster ride I thought the exact same thing! One of the best films ever made, the book even better! The book was required reading at my preparatory school. When I was in the USAF, I was deemed unfit for duty, sent to a psych ward, and was shocked to learn this film was required watching for Air Force psychiatry training and education. Fact, some of the lower ranked airmen were acting like the African American guys in this film, I was a sergeant and asked to use the ping pong room, they told me, not yet sir, when we're ready to open it. When they opened it, they were playing in the room themselves but didn't allow us in there. No one cared about us patients. Something happened to me, the USAF didn't like it and muscled me out with standing ovation from the service. Good film, good reaction!

This is in Salem, Oregon State Hospital. There is still a correctional facility in Pendleton, OR where they make jeans and stuff called Prison Blues. Also, even though this movie was made in 1975, I believe the story takes place in the 1960s.

I really wish you had read the book first. It is outstanding. The movie is too, but as usual, so much more makes sense with the book. Mc Murphy is faking it, because he thinks he will have it easier than jail. He doesn't realize he can't leave on his own. Nurse Ratchet does want the meetings to be chaotic, it is another way she can exercise control over the ward. This is one of my favourites.

The orderlies would light the cigarettes because they obviously wouldn't allow patients matches or lighters. The movie is set as the same time frame the novel came out, 1963.

The hospital where this was filmed is in my hometown and looks the same, aside from the paint. And Depoe Bay, where they go fishing, is less than two miles north of where my grandparents lived. Can't count how many times I've been across that bridge.

This was filmed in the Oregon State hospital. The guy who played the doctor who ran it was the actual doctor who ran that hospital, he never had an official complaint filed against him in his whole career. He ended up actually diagnosing the actor who played Harding with leukemia and predicted when he would die to the month. A lot of the extras were actual mental patients.

Ken Kesey, the author of the book, was the leader of the Merry Pranksters. Kesey and the Merry Pranksters lived communally at Kesey's homes in California and Oregon, and are noted for the sociological significance of a lengthy road trip they took in the summer of 1964, traveling across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus called Furthur, organizing parties, and giving out LSD. He was quite the character, to say the least. It's been told that he actually worked the night shift at an asylum and would go into work high on acid.

So much respect for Ken. Read the OFOTCN in college and wrote a term paper on it, followed by doing “Sometimes A Great Notion” for myself. Got to see him up close in 84’ when living near Arizona State U. There were flyers posted about his free “talk” on campus. He was still moving the ball forward, giving a pep talk for English majors to become future teachers, and I recall some readings of Shakespeare thrown in, followed by an invite to share beers at the local watering hole. After seeing some vids about beatniks recently, I realized he was probably the link between them and the hippies, given his link with Neal Cassidy and the way his lifestyle was so similar to “On The Road”.

I saw this movie in 1975. It pointed out how flawed that GOVERNMENT-FUNDED mental healthcare was then. Unfortunately, instead of improving it, Regan eliminated it altogether. Then he replaced it with nothing. It's PART of the reason America is suffering from a severely massive mental illness epidemic, today (e.g., escalating suicides, violence, drug addiction, etc.).

@@glennthompson1173 Thank you for your reply. At the age of 18, I was nearly drafted to fight in LBJ's Vietnam War. I remember well when MLK met with Vietnamese Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh. Just hours later, MLK came out loudly against the Vietnam War. Then LBJ ended MLK's FBI protection. If my recollection is correct, only a year after coming out against the war, MLK was killed. I still believe LBJ had MLK killed for coming out against the Vietnam War. LBJ's domestic policies were terrific (creating Medicare, etc.). However, I think he gave the MIC too much power over government military funding, which Reagan put on steroids. I think, all of the above, combined with the Citizens United Decision, is a big part of why funding wars & corporate profits take a severely radical priority over things like the government-funded mental healthcare America desperately needs today. so many sane people went insane in those places.... psychiatry has so much blood on their hands... so many deaths and neglect and dark documentaries done on this horror of reality...like the scene when all the shrinks are like "he isn't mentally ill" and nurse ratched goes "I'd like to keep him on the ward" .... of course she would.... she is a sociopath lol makes me think of my first lesson on the art of being 2 faced my brothers 2nd grade elementary school teacher won TEACHER OF THE YEAR award despite doing vicious things to kids...like my brother brought a stuffed animal to class and she tossed it to the class who passed it around laughing making him cry, then dumped a bottle of water on a students head... i had a similar teacher that made me walk when i had casts on both legs and in a wheelchair...he forced me to walk in front of the class to humiliate me..then everyone said faker! and it was due to my MS. Great reaction. You might want to try Cool Hand Luke (1967) with Paul Newman in the lead role. Prison rather than mental ward but it touches similar themes. Others have commented that Chief is the narrator in the book. It is worth adding that his narrative includes some wild and distorted stuff at night when he is drugged. The book is a must read.

Dont know if anyone mentioned it, but Nicholson actually underwent electro-shock therapy in order to better understand his role. Method acting produces sublime results, but in his case may have taken a permanent toll on his mind.

The movie was made in the mid 70s but I think, the time period is the late 1950s. That is why they were doing things like electro, shock and lobotomies. The location was supposed to be just a few miles from the Canadian border. So that’s why they were talking about going to Canada. At that time, you did not need a passport to go over the US/Canadian border. That didn’t change Until the 1980s or later when Islamic terrorists started doing their business and the government decided they needed to tighten up the borders a little bit.

I love your quick let's-say armchair diagnosis - because it probably is not far off! All these neurodivergencies have always existed, always expressed themselves, I remember someone comparing Harald Hardrada to a an adult with ADHD, in the time, culture and political position he was in Don't feel bad about the ending though, the Chief told Jack he wouldn't leave him there, and he didn't! That was Jack's way out of the building, they left together! Christopher Lloyd's character seems to understand this, without even knowing - as you're there all heartbroken, his celebration makes you smile, cus you know what he knows!

1. Gold nuggets in the cast. 2. This movie snagged all of the top 5 Oscars.😎 3. Harding physically resembles my old barber/friend 😇 WWII vet. 4. "She's a something of a cunt ain't she Doc." 5. Mac did more for those guys than Nurse Ratched and her crew. 6. Ratched uses Billy's mother as her weapon. They all have their weaknesses, and she uses whatever they are against them for control. 7. They gave Mac a lobotomy and the Chief put him out of his misery. He knew Mac wouldn't want to live like that. 8. Nicholsen and Scatman worked together in, "The Shining". 9. It's not easy to tell because the 70s was always a big mess stylistically but the story is set in the 1950s, so not everything depicted in the movie is what was going on in the 70s but not too far off. Shock therapy is basically an artificially induced grand mal seizure which leaves a person in a highly relaxed state for several days and was a popular tool in sanitariums back in the day. A low voltage version is still available as a medical treatment but under full anesthesia and only with a patient's consent. The old way could cause memory loss, pulled muscles and even fractured bones.

I was my 60's before I saw it and it's not far off even in today's mental wards...should you voluntarily commit yourself..they will either find reasons to keep you until your insurance runs out or you have to beg your way out...just another failure on the part of the 'medical Practice' all these years... I personally don't see Ratched as the absolute villain that she may seem. Yes she's inflexible and power-mad but I believe she really wants to help and that she believes her rigid system is the way. Everyone in this story is a victim including her. Not just talking about her getting choked out, but that of a professional woman in her time struggling to rise in the ranks of a "man's world" not to imagine the upbringing she may have had. She was taught order and discipline. Meanwhile Mack is the opposite side to the same coin. I'd argue that both Mack and Ratched were as equally helpful to the rest of the ward as they were harmful.

Ratched was obsessive-compulsive; you can see it in the perfection of how she does everything, done to every hair in place and the starched pure-white uniform. It's all about an intensely-held control, diamond hard. And she believes her way, under rules and inflexibility, is what the world needs. She suffered her own mental illness. The inmates running the institution.

Did you read the book? She was the villian. She wanted control and used the vulnerabilities of the patients to keep them weak. In the novel, she was good friends with Billy's mother and used that continually to disturb Billy. She wanted to keep them there. It was her fault that Billy slit his wrists. She enjoyed causing chaos in meetings to justify keeping the men there. The novel is written from the Chief's poverty, and discusses the idea of mental health and freedom and courage to live. That is why the ending is so amazing, watching the Chief make the choice to engage life.
