Did you catch that the Black man had to pick cotton before he got his freedom? There was a deeper message in that scene that was talked about for years after the movie came out. When I read about it, it blew my freaking mind. The depths go even further when you consider that all of the black cars that pulled up to the party were carrying white people inside much like the Black bodies they snatch to live inside of them. It's super effing creepy. As is the fact that Rose didn't want Chris to show his ID to the cop because she didn't want the cop to know she was the last person he was with since he too was going to come up missing. Hope that didn't mess you up like it did me. Truly a horror movie.

The whole movie's written like that. A 'buck' was a racial slur used to describe Black men in the post-Reconstruction era, particularly those who refused to bend to the law of white authorities and were seen as violent and disobedient. It's also another name for an adult male deer. When they hit the deer, it's a premonition for Chris and a layered commentary on Black people dying on the side of the road at the hands of authorities with racial motivations, which had started to happen quite a bit again around the time of the film's release. Also, that beginning scene of the young man being abducted in a suburban area..... Trayvon Martin, anyone?
@suprsparx7 ай бұрын
@@dawb86 Thank you for pointing out more I didn't realize. This movie is so layered that I catch something different every time I watch it. Truly a remarkable film and the way that it just captures so much while telling this kind of story is incredible. I know it made me trust white people even less.

This is one of those movies where you have to watch multiple times. There is a lot in this movie and I find something new everytime I watch it. I have seen it plenty of times but each time I understand something different and I find something I didn't find the previous time from watching it. Every time I watch the movie it feels like I'm watching it for the first time.

One more thing to add! When Chris hit Gloria (when she basically walked in front of the car) he didn't wanna just drive off, because his mom died of a hit and run and he felt like he couldn't do anything. I guess this time, he wanted to do something about it.
