The novel on which the movie is based is a semi-autobiography of the author, Akiyuki Nosaka. In real life, of course, he didn't die at the age of 14 and became a writer in post-war Japan.

I don't cry while watching movies but this was an exception. I cried like a baby while watching this. Setsuko's death broke my heart. And to think that people actually suffered like this during that time only made me feel more sad. This is a masterpiece and I would say one of the best movies ever created. I really wish they lived and I still do. I don't think I'll ever forget about Setsuko. Rest In Peace Pure Soul.

It is actually based on an autobiography where the author didn't die, but he wish he did die. I watched this movie for the first time 8 months ago, and it haunts me from time to time. It is such a beautiful masterpiece that everyone should watch at least once.
