So Edna has almost always been portrayed by males. If I remember right in the original a famous drag queen was cast in the part. So in this remake to honor that tradition, they cast John. He honestly killed it.

Divine played Edna in the John Waters movie. Edna is always played by a man. Harvey Fierstein played Edna on Broadway. Divine was a drag queen.

I spent my teen years in Baltimore in the era this story is placed. This musical is based on a nonmusical 1988 film from independent filmmaker John Waters (who has a cameo in this film as the flasher in the opening number). Most of Waters's films starred a school friend of his who had become a local drag queen, Lady Divine (later dropping the 'Lady' to just Divine). Divine was cast in the 1988 "Hairspray" as Edna Turnblad, a supporting role for once, but still integral to the film. The 1988 premiere was presented with great fanfare, attended by stars of the film and local celebrities, including Baltimore's mayor. Waters attended and, of course, Divine (though Divine dressed in a tux as his normal identity Glenn Milstead). It was a huge deal for Baltimore, for Waters, and especially for Glenn/Divine, who was just starting to make national acting appearances. Two weeks after the premiere, Divine died of natural causes. Out of respect for Divine and how she was robbed of a career advancement so suddenly, the tradition of always casting a male in the role of Edna Turnblad was established. Baltimore is a major city below the Mason-Dixon line (which is Maryland's northern boundary), so it's a southern city with some of the problematic historical racism. John Waters had been asked to write an article in the mid-1980s about an upcoming reunion broadcast to be aired on a local TV station. It was the 20th anniversary of "The Buddy Dean Show", a local teen dance show in the style of "American Bandstand". Waters contrasted the show with local history occurring during the time of that show, including racial tension at a local amusement park over blacks bumped off rides to accommodate white customers and how blacks were only allowed on the dance show once a month. From this, a film idea was born. I'm spending my golden years in Seattle now and am pleased to have learned that the world premiere of the stage musical of "Hairspray" was developed and performed was a 15 minute walk from my current home, at the 5th Avenue Theater. From there it was a road show, traveling the US and refining the production before opening on Broadway. The Broadway version was nominated for 13 awards, won 8 of them, and ran for 6 years before being adapted to a movie musical. Throughout, that respectful nod to Divine remains in the casting of a man for the role of Edna Turnblad. Divine will always have a place in film, theater, musical, and TV history.

The mom, Edna has always been played by a male actor as a more comedic role, but I remember from the DVD special features that John Travolta wanted to commit to playing Edna as a very believable woman, and purposefully played her very soft and feminine. As a voluptuous almost six foot tall woman myself, I really appreciated him playing a woman that’s a gentle giant and still very cute and sexy with how she caries herself. And I also think his comedic performance helped translate Edna’s musical character from stage to film perfectly.

This movie is PURE fun, a great time. Trivia tidbit- the flasher at the beginning, the first song, is John Waters. who wrote, directed and created the original, with Divine as Edna, which is why a dude plays the mother. And Travolta killed it as Edna too! And at the end, one of 4 people being seated before the Miss Hairspray competition is Rikki Lake.

I grew up watching the original movie by John Waters (he makes a cameo as the Flasher during "Good Morning, Baltimore") that starred Ricki Lake as Tracy (she's at the end as the talent scout), and Jerry Stiller (Mr Pinky) was Tracy's Dad in the original movie. :) And for context, the role of Tracy's Mom was played originally by the drag queen Divine (and is generally played by men in productions). John Waters and Divine did quite a few movies together. Cry-Baby is another Waters' film of that you should check out. Also in Baltimore, and it stars quite a few big names - early Johnny Depp! Chicago is a great movie musical with Queen Latifah as well.

Someone watching Hairspray? Hell yeah. I'm here. Fun fact: the flasher at the beginning is the director of the original movie from the 80's. Tracy's mom was played by the famous drag queen Divine so all adaptions since have had men in drag playing Edna. Travolta killed it here but played her as a soft-spoken, reclusive Mama while Divine was more a deep and raspy, I'll-whoop-yo-Ass mama. LOL

4:57 - Hairspray has a similar history to 'Little Shop.' It started as a made-for-tv movie, then became a hit off-Broadway musical, then was adapted into a big-screen movie. In the original movie, Edna Turnblad was portrayed by the legendary drag queen Divine, which established a tradition of Edna being played by men in drag. When the producers of this version were asked who they wanted to play Edna, the question wasn't even finished before they said 'John Travolta.' He agreed almost as eagerly. 29:16 - Best line in the movie and the best come-back EVER! 29:35 - The female talent scout is famous talk show hostess Rikki Lake. She played Tracey in the original movie. 31:26 - In the musical, they go with the traditional fairytale ending of having Tracey win. I like this version MUCH better, because not only does it fit the theme of the story better, but it makes the integration of the show much more organic then just saying 'Velma's out. We're integrated now.' 34:17 - "WHERE DA WHITE WOMEN AT!?!"
