Halloween (1978) Movie Description:
On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith's Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.
Halloween is a 1978 American independent slasher film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The plot centers around a mental patient Michael Myers who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his babysitting teenage sister on Halloween night when he was six years old. Fifteen years later, he escapes and returns to his hometown, where he stalks a female babysitter and her friends, while under pursuit by his psychiatrist.
Filming took place in Southern California in May 1978, before premiering in October, where it grossed $70 million, becoming one of the most profitable independent films of all time. Primarily praised for Carpenter's direction and score, many critics credit the film as the first in a long line of slasher films inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and Bob Clark's Black Christmas (1974).
Halloween spawned a film franchise comprising eleven films which helped construct an extensive backstory for its antagonist Michael Myers, sometimes narratively diverging entirely from previous installments. A direct sequel of the film was released in 1981. A remake was released in 2007, which was followed by a sequel in 2009. An eleventh installment, which serves as a direct sequel to the original film that retcons all previous sequels, was released in 2018; this was followed by two direct sequels: Halloween Kills (2021) and the upcoming Halloween Ends (2022). Additionally, a novelization, a video game and comic book series have been based on the film. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

This was the ultimate low budget innovator. Their use of the steadicam was like the second ever instance of it, and John Carpenter's score is legend. Michael's Mask and his blank emotionless demeanor gets under your skin and for me it makes him and it the greatest slasher of all time

"The Thing," which appears on a tv during this movie, is not a hint that Carpenter was making the Thing at the time. The title card is from the original 1951 "The Thing From Another World!" Carpenter would go on to work on a remake of this movie, which _had_ been being shopped around at the time, but was originally being worked on by a different director. Carpenter deliberately tried to make his title card very similar to the original's, so it is understandable why you might mistake the two. John Carpenter has said that he was originally skeptical about making a remake of "The Thing From Another World!" because he didn't feel he could top the original, an indication that he was very fond of the movie which was probably why this cameo appears in Halloween. However, he was convinced to make it after someone asked him to consider reading the original story that the film was based on, which was very different from the movie. Carpenter's "The Thing" hews much closer to the original story as a result (though is still not an exact adaption).

The version of The Thing that Tommy and Laurie are watching on television is the original 1951 version of The Thing From Another World, directed by Christian Nyby and produced by Howard Hawks. Carpenter was a fan of Howard Hawks and The Thing, which is why he used it in Halloween and eventually made his own remake of The Thing in 1982.

I wish I could watch this again for the first time. What a classic. Ending isn’t really abrupt though. Intention is to show that Michael is the boogeyman. Shows all of the locations he’s been throughout the film ending with his house as his breathing gets louder and louder. He’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time. It’s a great ending and was intended to be the only film in the series since they never thought there would be a sequel.

Michael's mask is an actual William Shatner/Captain Kirk mask that was altered. If you Google it you can compare the unaltered mask with this "improved" version. This movie was very creepy to see in a big old dark theater at night when it was new, on a proper big screen, with everyone screaming at all the right times. 4:00 -- Notice the palm trees in the background of what is supposed to be Illinois. Carpenter couldn't film in autumn so all the dead leaves were placed there for each scene and then swept up for the next one. 12:30 -- They're watching the original "The Thing" from the 50s, not the Carpenter version. He used the same title graphics.

This movie is a CLASSIC. It's the movie that made me fall in love with horror... and started a lifelong obsession with Jamie Lee Curtis. Not the first slasher, but it codified SO MUCH. And honestly, in Laurie's defense at the end, she just found her friends murdered and took a fall down the stairs that probably gave her a concussion. I don't think she was thinking clearly. But fast forward to Halloween 2018... she's ready then...

At the end when Loomis (Donald Pleasance) looks down and sees that Micheal is gone, prior to shooting the scene, John Carpenter asked Pleasance to look either like "I knew he would be gone." or "How is he not dead?" After they shot the scene, Carpenter loved it and asked him what expression he decided to go with, and Pleasance basically didn't tell him, leaving it open to interpretation.

"I hate how it ended so abruptly." That was standard storytelling for movies until around the late '80s/early '90s. Studios were all about editing films to be as concise as possible to maximize the number of movies a cinema could sell tickets to in one day. However, as home video options and eventually streaming services boomed, there was less of an emphasis on making movies shorter, and it became the norm to include denouement in the final scenes -- enough that younger generations and audiences of today now expect it.

While I give the movie itself high marks, I personally find Michael Myers boring and don't understand the cult following that he has. Fun Fact: All of the actors wore their own clothes, since there was no money for a costume department. Jamie Lee Curtis went to J.C. Penney for Laurie Strode's wardrobe. She spent less than $100 for the entire set. She shot the film while on hiatus from the sitcom Operation Petticoat (1977).

18:44 Consider Laurie's inner monologue at this point in the movie. "Hmm. It's Halloween night and I just received a weird call from this house and now all the lights are out. I _could_ call the _sheriff's_ office to investigate it and let _them_ take any involved risks but I think I'll investigate it and take all the risks _myself."_ 18:50 "And now, here I am, standing in the _door_ of this dark house, with not a single serious source of illumination, calling Linda and Bob, concerned enough about them that I came _over,_ but _not_ concerned enough about _myself_ to, say, _turn on a light!"_ 19:02 "And now, here I am, scolding them for not answering, and hiding in the dark, clearly, pulling a _joke_ on me but _still_ not seeing the sense in finding a _light_ switch." 🤦 Come on, Laurie. Just hit the lights.

This movie set the template, it started it all...it didn't need gore or multiple kills, it was all about tension and suspense.

Halloween, best theme song ever! Open windows and unlocked doors were a common thing back then. Director John Carpenter composed and performed the theme. I do wish we hadn't seen Michael's face there at the end; it kindof lowers the mystique of the character. You should watch the original "Friday the 13th", then watch a fan film called "Never Hike Alone".

Dude, I saw this film a week before my birthday in October 2000, my parents and I left town on Friday and came back on Sunday. We left for my sister's ROTC training. We were staying in our hotel in Flagstaff. My sister and I watched this, and it scared the hell out of me! But I enjoyed it very much.

No, "The Thing" was originally made in 1958. Look it up. The unique thing about the dialog is the talk all overlap's each other. Oh, and the Thing is played by James Arness, from "Gun Smoke" , as Matt Dillon.

John Carpenter movies are always worth checking out, always loved that he made his own soundtracks on top of directing, dude knew how to make movies on a budget and still make them memorable, Hollywood should've taken notes.

I can't explain it, but Michael's mask is almost a perfect picture of what evil looks like Maybe it is the pointed eye holes or what I call the high, arrogant cheek bones. Not all of the later masks had the same evil punch as the original one.

Just watched a cool show on Netflix about the making of Halloween like as hour ago. They made this movie for only 300K and John carpenter did the whole music score himself from scratch! Super impressive, a lot of incredibly talented people made an absolute classic!

The talent and creativity are so prevalent. Thank you sir, for all the free fun. I might have to jump in on patreon... knowing what I know now. And thank you for addressing my comment on you inserting yourself into the films. Also didn't realize how tedious THAT is to make happen. Keep on Keepin on. 🤘🏻📽

Compared to other slashers, the original Halloween always felt like the movie version of a spooky campfire story. The tension ramps up all the way to the final shot of Michael being gone from the ground, where you realize Loomis *might* have actually been right about him being a force of evil and not just a creepy killer.
