Wes Craven in the 90's was great when he went total meta horror with "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" and "Scream" both coming out within a couple of years of each other and both deconstructing 80's horror slashers. She couldn't scream for the death scene, but she was able to call out "Mom!" and it was kept in the film (and equally becomes a bit of a tearjerker that Tatum was calling out for her mom when she died). ADDITIONAL EDIT: Seeing that no one appears to get this, the trivia goes as followed: When filming Tatum's death scene, Rose McGowan went to the producers and told them that she can't scream. McGowan still tried and managed to make a few screams and squeals. In fact, she was able to call out "mom" as the only other thing she could do. When you watch the scene again, she screams "No! Mom!" just before being crushed to death, and it was kept in the film. So, when I made my above statement, it is to this bit of trivia I was referring to and only to TATUM'S DEATH SCENE. NOT to the scene with Casey at the start of the film. I hope this clears up any confusion in the future.

Honestly they do have really nice houses. It’s not fair. And one thing about Wes he was always called exploitive cause the violence in his movies was intense. But it really sends the message that these monsters aren’t people, and monsters aren’t gentle. Also never felt more old than at the comment “look at that old ass phone “😂 As far as stunts, I think with the end scene in particular is that this was one of the hardest scenes in horror to film. I believe it took 2-3 weeks to film. And everyone was sticky freezing and exhausted. So I think with all the chaos going on within the last set piece they had to break on the actors a little since a lot of them weren’t huge to begin with Matthew Lilard being one. And some being smaller TV stars before this came out. And I think the acting leans more into the satire level for me. Since this is 100% a satire on horror in general. This movie actually brought horror back. It was a dead genre before this movie came out. Wes is that good. But I noticed a lot of younger people (early to mid twenties said they dislike the dialogue. People have to realize that when scream came out in 1996 the horror genre wasn’t doing good at all. There was nothing but teen comedies and dramas. When Scream was released to theaters me and my family went to see it on the second day because of the word of mouth reviews was high. At that time cell phones was in its first stages, computers wasn’t the way they are now so basically if you wanted entertainment you had to go somewhere or rent movies from blockbuster unlike now where everything is at the tips of your finger. After the good reviews people started flooding in the theaters and was generally scared. So to me a lot of this new generation won’t get the same reaction to certain movies as to our generation regarding this movie. I think it’s one of those things where to understand this movie you had to be there at this time.

I will nnnnnnnever forget the shock I felt with the gore of especially the first scene + Tatum’s death. I’m not really sure/don’t remember how gore was prior to this movie . I was in middle school when I finally got to watch this (at a sleepover with my friend who had a good mom cause no way in hell my parents were gonna let me lol) and the only graphic horror shit I remember watching before scream was some sort of awful fly trap scene in a nightmare on elm street movie, and just that scene cause it scared the shit out of me. So those scenes in Scream absolutely s h o o k me cause I had never seen shit like that before. It’s a great memory 🙌

@@hopobilbow1551 Exactly, I remember this woman was on a date with her boyfriend that was sitting behind us in the theater and she was scared at the and cried in the opening scene.lol alot of folks especially this generation are definitely desensitized. Children have cell phones now where adult content can be viewed with no problem and they even have shock websites that will literally show you gruesome murders and gore pictures and videos. I had my first cell phone in 2002 when you couldn't view videos on it,you couldn't even send pictures yet and you better not use all your free mins up.You better wait till after 7pm or the weekends to use your free mins up.The first computer I had was apple but then internet was barely a thing and you needed dial up and AOL to even log on. How did you find the NC-17 version? These scenes are cut for the R-Rated version - Steve's entrails falling on the ground - Steaming entrails below Casey as she hangs - Zoom in on Casey's body is 50% faster - Tatum's head crush is shortened (hard to tell the difference honestly though) - Kenny's response to his cut throat is shortened (too realistic for the MPAA) - They don't show Billy actually stabbing Stu in the R rated version - Stu's arm bleeding on the floor is also cut. Edit: When i say “Cut” I mean “Altered”

The 90s were pretty high on sarcasm, it was a time when sarcastic humour was pretty prevalent, not just in movies and tv, music too, and from person to person. Scream pretty much captured the Zeitgeist of the time, which was an oxygen breather to the horror genre, it got largely left behind by this time, it's heyday truly plateaued. Scream was both a homage to the best of the genre and a sarcastic air wank to the worst of it. I was 12 when this came out so I was definitely the audience (shhhhh). The cast were young up and comers, none of them have done amazing acting wise but they've mostly all done their fair share of bits and pieces. It was very much for the MTV generation. MTV is a relic now but in 1996 it really was very cool, light on tv shows unless they were shows about music, interspersed with actual music and rare offerings like Beavis and Butthead. It was very much a time of counter culture. Hope you enjoy the second, if memory serves Scary Movie didn't lean into the plot too much.

The house where I lived growing up ('80s and '90s) was in the middle of nowhere, much like Drew's house. Our doors were unlocked and we sometimes had the shades drawn, sometimes not. Her house as depicted here isn't so far-fetched. The way Henry Winkler touched Neve Campbell was to reassure and comfort her and nothing more. It was not perceived as inappropriate back then, and shouldn't be.
