7:33 Originally, John Carpenter's point of Michael Myers was...there WAS no "point." The horror of the story is that one day, a happy, healthy six year old boy snapped for NO REASON. He's just pure evil. No rhyme or reason, consciousness to right or wrong or even goals. He just acts randomly. He IS the "Boogeyman."
@anthonyzarate9807
@anthonyzarate9807 2 жыл бұрын
He definitely is the "boogeyman"! However, he did not like that his sister was having sex while she was supposed to be watching him. Since he is "pure evil" that sealed her fate. Now, he will kill any young people he sees having sex on Halloween. Also, will stalk them and hunt them down until they are dead by any means necessary.

Since the film was being made on such a tight budget, they had to use a mask that already existed. Thw choices came down to a clown mask and a William Shatner mask with the eye holes enlarged and painted white. When Nick Castle came out wearing the white featureless mask, it actually scared people. That blankness is what makes The Shape so freaky.

One thing a lot of the other films never really capture is that Myers is very CEREBRAL in his stalking. He doesn't just want to kill you, he wants to terrify you. He also doesn't put himself in harm's way if he doesn't need to, he'll just ambush you and that's that. Later movies made him into an unstoppable tank who doesn't think and just destroys.

I think something that is very often missed is how smart Michael is. He's very calculating, which just feel different from other slasher right off the bat. Like him knocking down the plant outside the house to try and lure Annie, buy she doesn't take the bait. Him putting the rake on the back door to lock Laurie in and at least slow her down. He often does these types of things in the movies, and he does it without saying a word...

Halloween 1 and 2 were the two best ones, 4 onward is when they started trying to "explain" Myers which, while I'm still a fan of the films up to H20, introducing the whole "thorn" thing kind of ruins the idea, as Myers works best as "the Shape," who kills with seemingly no reason behind it.
@youngrootv
@youngrootv 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly. The whole point of him digging up his sister’s gravestone was just to use it in that messed up way on the bed which is insane lmao. The most recent films do however recapture how cerebral he is when he’s trying to scare people before he kills them though
@Robot666House
@Robot666House 2 жыл бұрын
In the book adaptation his stalking is strongly implied to have a sexual tone to it, with him having erections as he stalks his prey, almost as if the hunt is more important to him than the actual kill.

Michael is just evil personified. That's it. I know in this age of prequels and interconnected cinematic universes where every question must be answered, it's hard for audiences to accept any ambiguity or mystery. We don't know what made Michael kill his sister. When we are the victims of random violence, we don't always know the reason for it, at least now while it's happening. That's what's so scary about it; we don't know what's behind it. Michael is a kid who just up and killed his sister, there is no rhyme or reason to it. Evil can happen anywhere, even in the mind of a totally ordinary boy. Every time they try to explain Michael and his motives in this franchise, they just paint themselves into a corner and it's just never satisfying. It's BETTER if we don't know why he is the way he is.

Yeah Loomis shouldn’t be a doctor because he’s having a hard time finding Michael at the Doyle house when he has no idea who the Doyles are and because he won’t lie to Laurie and tell her he just shot the fairy godmother in the chest 6 times and he still got up and walked away from it. Makes sense.
@7rollface

As to the why of Michael, the whole point is that there isn’t a why. He’s just an entity. It’s to the point that the script only ever referred to him as “The Shape”. On a more subtextual level, he’s the embodiment of the dark things that live under the surface in the seemingly idyllic suburbia. That’s why it caught on. It wasn’t the first slasher film, but it was the first one set where the audience lives.

Halloween 1978 is a horror classic. The score of music by John Carpenter is so iconic. Michael Myers a character who says nothing. But his presence and intimidating stance and his reason for why he's the way he's is so mysterious and creepy. Because most horror slashers kill for the joy of it. Others do it because you landed in the wrong campsite. And you got Michael who reasons is unknown. But anyway great reaction\commentary and I hope you have a wonderful Monday. I always found the more someone talks through a horror film the more it pulls them out of the experience. Truth: in film and real life there is no cure to film's evil (supernatural) and real world mental illness (natural). With this film other doctors would have just gotten themselves merked by a kid! Michael is like a force of nature...it cannot be talked to and gives no shits about what you may want or not want. Halloween🎃!

If you want to follow the Halloween saga with correct continuity, it goes like this: Halloween (1978) Halloween (2018) Halloween Kills (2021) Halloween Ends (2022) The other Halloweens are not relevant to be honest, they've explored ideas of a curse etc down the line, but this was never John Carpenters desire, he even disregarded Halloween 2 (1981) to make the 2018 one the official sequel. Also, Carpenter wanted to keep whatever Myers is a mystery, which is why he wasn't fond of Rob Zombies remake. Halloween 3 Season of the Witch doesn't have Myers and was a project by Carpenter with the idea of having a movie centred around the Halloween season, but it flopped when it came out but is now regarded as a great horror movie by many.

P.S.S. Remember, this was in 1978...not in 2022. Back then, it wasn't about talking to kids and trying to understand their feelings and diagnosing them with all kinds of psychological disorders. Plus, Dr. Loomis and others tried to reach him for about 7 years. The boy didn't say a single word in 15 years! How can you talk to someone who REFUSES to speak to anyone??? That is when Loomis (the only person who truly knew the evil inside of Michael) spent the rest of those 15 years making sure he never sees the light of day again!

I am a big fan of the Halloween series, and it is not often that someone is able to tell me something I do not already know, or a fun new trivia fact. Well done! I NEVER knew that Toodles from Hook was the same guy as the cemetery guy in Halloween! Both are movies that I have watched millions of times and I NEVER caught that!! LOL. Thank you! Fun fact right back: Nick Castle, who played Michael Myers in this one, was one of the story editors of Hook!! And Dean Cundy, who was the cinematographer for Halloween also did the cinematography for Hook! What a small world. The eye thing, though, is from Laurie poking him in the eye with the hanger moments before in the closet. His eye would be normal otherwise. But I hope you do continue on with the series. Although the eye has nothing to do with him being evil, there will be various answers given throughout the series. I hope you continue with 1981's Halloween II next. It's a really good one, too.

Ok, so if you are looking for "answers" in the original Halloween saga (part 1 through curse, which I think is part 5), then you will not find what you are looking for. Micheal is exactly what Loomis laid him out to be. Pure evil. When Carpenter originally made the movie, the idea was to make him a force of nature. He wasn't even known as "Micheal" when they made the movie. He was only "the shape," which shows you that they were trying to remove the concept of Micheal from any form of humanity, which erases things like "did he know what he was doing at 6". The point is that, yes, he did know. That's why he did it. If you want a more "traditional" telling of Micheal's story, then you would have to watch the Rob Zombie Halloween movies, where they have all the "classic" signs of a psycho killer, e.g., child abuse, killing small animals, violence, regular part of home life, etc., etc., etc. But originally, Micheal didn't have any of those things. For all intents and purposes, he did just "snap" and, over the years lost his humanity until he fully matured and became what he is today. Pure, unadulterated evil in human form. No compassion, empathy, conscience, or ability to reason or discern right from wrong. Only violence towards anyone who crosses his path, or slights, offends or stands in his way.

The point of Michael is that there is no point. He was just born that way (a psychopath, sadist, etc). That's what's scary, there is no why, it's completely random. I listen to a lot of true crime and like to try to understand the psychology and everything too. But if you listen to enough of it, you'll find that there are some killers with seemingly no reason behind them. Not a particularly bad childhood, traumatic event, nothing. It's spooky. Also, Michael being pretty much un-killable is supposed to be a metaphor. Saying he's the boogeyman, pure evil, not really a human being. That's why Dr. Loomis calls him "it". (That was really pissing me off the first time though lol. I was like "how is he not dead!?!") PS sorry for the essay lol

I guess you can think of it this way: as an avatar of "the boogieman", Michael Myers is the vessel for an unkillable, malevolent spirit who took over when Michael was just a child. In order to understand why Michael does what he does, you'd have to understand what this malevolent spirit "wants" and how it "thinks", which (at this early stage in the franchise's history) is left up to your imagination since the point of the movie isn't to expose (and therefore explain) "why" it all happened, just to immerse you in the primal terror of it.

Heres the thing when you watch a movie you need to listen to the facts being presented. And stop trying to put your own logic into it because this movie explains it. Has Dr Loomis said at 6 years old Michael Myers stabbed and killed his sister then completely sutdown. He stopped talking he's showed no sign of remorse or right or wrong he wouldn't do anything to communicate with anyone. All he would do a sit there and stare into space no therapist could reach him. So you trying to say he's a bad therapist is incorrect he said he tried to reach him but he said nothing he just sat they're looking into space. He stated he stopped talking when he was 6 years old no therapist could get him to talk no one could get him to talk. Showing no emotions or any indication of right or wrong he was pretty much a plant. So to speak something there physically but that's it. He's showed no indication of intelligence until the night he escaped. Clearly everyone seen he was just sitting there looking into space all the time. Thats why every single doctor and every single nurse did it take Michael Myers as a threat and some of them have been there since day one when he was 6 years old. They seen no sign of anything happening as far as a thinking process happening in his head they also never speak or heard him never speak. Michael Myers at 6 years old stabbed and killed his sister to death. He then stop talking he stopped showing any emotions. And before someone's ruled criminally insane they are seen by several people. Not just one and everyone of them had to agree he was criminally insane. They all seen the the same thing a 6-year-old who stabbed and killed his sister and stopped talking and stop showing emotions. I know how therapy works you talk talk to a couple of people before they come up with a plan. So clearly Michael Myers at 6 years old did not talk to any of them and he showed no emotions he just set there and looked into space for every single one of them. So clearly you are one of those people that watches a movie and ignores the facts and puts in your own opinions and facts. Then go with what you added to the movie which did not exist and ignore the actual solid facts of the movie.

Thank you! You're the only one who actually explained why Dr Loomis was 100 percent correct in his assessment of Michael Myers and why saying he was not a good doctor was completely false. Dr. Loomis is the only one who understood Michael Myers when no one else would listen to him and I think he was being unfairly judged. Tons of doctors have seen and analyzed Michael Myers but only Dr. Loomis was able to see what everyone else failed to see and stuck to his guns while his peers/colleagues ignored him. And he went above and beyond trying to stop him while putting his own life at risk throughout the whole franchise. He was the best doctor hands down. Dr. Loomis understood him better than everyone else. Michael Myers was no innocent angel in need of "proper care". He was pure evil. Evil cannot be fixed with a different doctor.

@@toyabofficial Thank you but my comment should not of been needed here. But it was sadly because people like her an there is alot of them sadly out. There are people that literally and figuratively completely ingor every single thing that is said an shown in the movie. Then replace it with things that they make up in their head even though the movie says an shows that they are wrong. Like recently in a nother comment section for another reation video for this movie. Someone full heartily thinks an beliefs that Michael Myers in this. Is an was never a real person they really believe an think that Michael Myers. Is a thought came to life a myth that took a form from nothing. Basically Lori Strode made him real somehow yea someone 100% believes this nothing can convince them otherwise. I learned from several audio commentaries an bonus features. That the writers an directors really hate it when people choose to completely ignore. Every single thing said a shown in their movies then replace it with nonsense that they make up in their head. So I call people like her an that other person out with the facts of the movie.

The original credit for Michael Myers was, “The Shape,” (a concept.) I recommended watching 2, 3, maybe 4, but that’s it. John Carpenter wanted the Halloween films to be an anthology series, and not the franchise it became. They get Carpenter to make 2, and then they let him make 3 in the anthology spirit, however, audiences we’re pissed 3 didn’t have Myers and Carpenter was like, “screw this, I have other movies to make.” Black Christmas (1974) is another great film like this one, I highly recommend it, (usually before I recommend Halloween.) If you like slashers, I personally prefer Giallos, and would recommend starting down that path with films like Blood and Black Lace (1964,) The Perfume Of The Lady In Black (1974,) & Torso (1973.)

II is the only sequel Carpenter wrote which is likely why it comes closest to the original. Well, that and being made only a few years later and Cundey's cinematography on the first three only. Carpenter really liked III as do I ... can't blame him for moving on when audiences didn't appreciate it for what it was. 4 is the best of the rest. Rob Zombie's world is its own thing. Black Christmas is another classic. In addition to your strong Giallo picks, I'll recommend Don't Torture a Duckling (1972), Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972), and The Killer Must Kill Again (1975).

"What is Micheal supose to be" Evil. He's evil. A pure simple minded killer It's the old stalker and the babysitter story. It's a big reason why future movies really fail to add anything good. It adds to much to a simple story about the boogeyman killing because it does. No rhyme or reason. Just kill.

Michael's signature mask, is a William Shatner captain Kirk mask... in 1975, Shatner did a made for TV movie called Devils Rain. Requiring a special effect a cast negative of his face, called a life mask was made. Later used fir Kirk masks..... Halloween producer Tommy Lee Wallace with meager budget needed masks, visited a Hollywood costume shop... 3 masks... a clown mask for childhood Michael, a emmett Kelly Sad clown mask, and a Kirk mask. They cut the eyes out. Cut off the sideburns and fwipped the hair and spray painted it white.....

The king of slasher films, imo. While I enjoy Freddy the most from the killer roster, this film is up there with Hitchcock in its execution. It’s even cooler when you actually listen to the cast and crew talk about the behind the scenes stuff.

The first movie for me stands on it's own. Carpenter only wrote Halloween 2 and needed a bottle of Jack Daniel's to get through it. He hates Halloween 2. Part 3 has nothing to do with Michael Meyers and 4, 5 and 6 are just imitations of Friday the 13th (itself a Halloween imitation), making him even more supernatural. if you're looking for answers, you won't get definite ones. Each sequel changes what Michael is... sorta like Jason Voorhees.

Michael is without a doubt my favorite character with Chucky, Freddy, Ghostface and Jason(in that order) coming after. Such a brilliant idea to have a slasher who snaps for absolutely no reason. “Absence of character” is what makes Michael “The Shape.” This idea since Halloween II(1981) has become an after thought and they’ve since tried to explain why he kills. Rob Zombie did this and practically destroyed the franchise after Resurrection. DGG and Blumhouse tried doing this while trying to maintain the illusion of being “different” and their movies still aren’t that good. It sucks it has to be this way, but I honestly wished they would’ve stoped after 81’, would’ve been the perfect 2 part film.

So, canonically speaking. Halloween 1978, Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are the only ones that matter if I remember correctly. This particular movie is my favorite movie of all time. I am thirty so, I didn't get to enjoy it when it was in theaters but, I love this series. I enjoyed Halloween 2-7 for the most part. Halloween Resurrection (8) was DAMN BAD...imo. Mostly saying this because it will get real confusing if you decide to watch all of them lmao.

Michael Myers is supposed to be very ambiguous somewhere between just a man and being supernatural. The only one you truly need to watch at this point after the original is Halloween 2018 40 years later....Halloween Kills....Halloween Ends coming out this year October 14th..These are the strongest best continuity with Jimmie Lee Curtis as her famous classic character original story arc containing to completion!
