Storyline
Highlander is a 1986 British-American fantasy action-adventure film directed by Russell Mulcahy from a screenplay by Gregory Widen, Peter Bellwood, and Larry Ferguson. It stars Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery. The film chronicles the climax of an age-old war between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past and present-day storylines. It is the first film in the Highlander franchise.
Connor MacLeod (Lambert) is born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century. After being mortally wounded by the murderous Kurgan (Brown) in battle, he makes a seemingly miraculous recovery and is banished from his village under suspicion of witchcraft. Five years later, MacLeod is found by swordsman Ramírez (Connery), who trains him in swordplay and explains that they and others were born immortal,

Lambert's first language is French. Highlander was his second English speaking role. He worked with a dialect coach to master Conner's dialogue. He's also near-sighted to the degree of being legally blind without corrective lenses. This explains his intense "stare right through you" gaze. Love this movie and Queen's soundtrack!

That one is pretty adrenaline-fueled. I’ve always thought “Who Wants to Live Forever” was Queen’s best song ever, although only for someone who listens to it with the memory of its context in this movie, i.e. feeling the heartache of watching your true love grow old and die while you remain eternal.

"There can be only one!" Fun Fact: Clancy Brown originally wanted the Kurgan to be dressed in a suit and bowler hat. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Connor (Christopher Lambert) drives a Porsche 356 A Speedster. The cars that the Kurgan (Clancy Brown) drive are a: 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, 1973 Plymouth Duster, and a 1975 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Music Enthusiast Fact: Queen originally intended to record only one song for this movie, but after viewing footage from the movie, they were inspired to write more. The band members each had a favorite scene and composed songs specifically for them. Preeminence Privilege Fact: All of Sir Sean Connery's scenes had to be filmed in a week, due to Connery's schedule. He had a bet with director Russell Mulcahy that they would not finish in seven days, but Mulcahy won the bet. Connery earned $1 million for his week's work. Movie Magic Fact: The swords sparking while clashing was accomplished by attaching a wire to each sword that led down the arms of the actors to a car battery. One was connected to the positive terminal and the other to the negative terminal, so when the swords touched, there was an arc. Location Location Fact: The scene in the alley where the Kurgan (Clancy Brown) beheads Kastagir (Hugh Quarshie) and then stabs the vigilante (Christopher Malcolm), followed by the explosion, was filmed in an alley in England, even though it was set in New York City. Director Russell Mulcahy was reluctant to set off the explosion in the alley, because the windows were full of Victorian glass, but he was given permission to do so, because that particular site was going to be destroyed in a few months anyway.

This is going to have either a remake or a reboot. At the moment, Henry Cavill is attached to star with Chad Stahelski (the John Wick franchise) to direct, they are still working on the script. - There were several sequels (most of which make NO sense, especially the second one...and there are two versions of that one!), and there were also two TV series in the 1990s, an animated series...it is a franchise that does not die. - Yeah, Christopher Lambert was Raiden. His first English language film was 'Greystoke, the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes' playing Tarzan. He barely spoke English at the time. Most of his credits are French. - Clancy Brown pissed off Sean Connery, nearly killing him during their sword fight...and since there really weren't stunt guys, most of the sword fights were done by the actors with very little rehearsal. Clancy had done one other film before this called The Bride starring Sting, playing Frankenstein's monster, and Sting recommended Brown for the Kurgen, as Sting and Mulcahy had worked together on music videos for The Police. He was paid next to nothing for Highlander, and receives no residuals (DVD, video streaming, etc) from it, either. Among Clancy Brown's best roles: Sergent Zim in Starship Trooper, Captain Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, and The Harbinger in John Wick 4. Clancy Brown's voicework: Mr Krabs on Spongebob Squarepants, Lex Luthor in Superman and Justice League cartoon series, and Savage Opress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. - What also made the sword fights especially dangerous was that Lambert was almost legally blind at the time of filming, and basically is now. - Director Russell Mulcahy made his feature debut with this film. Prior to this, Mulcahy was known as a music video director, one of the best, in the 80s. Since then he has made The Shadow with Alec Baldwin, and Ricochet with Denzel Washington. Personally, I recommend The Shadow, a fantasy set in the 1930s based on a character in pulp magazines and the radio in the 1930s...it's a lot of fun. - As each immortal falls, the one who wins takes the energy and knowledge of the one defeated. Because of the Kurgan is the strongest of the immortals, but Macleod is pretty strong himself.
@ChannelReuploads9451

From what I understand, there are TWO "Quickening's". First when one takes another Immortal's head, absorbing their power, and the Second, the "DARK" Quickening, which is what we see coming from Kurgan after Connor takes his head. The Dark Quickening tries to corrupt its hosts, turning them Evil, when Connery is explaining "If kurgan wins the prize, Humanity will pay a price", and in the final scene, with the animated creature from Kurgan, *THAT* is the dark quickening, trying to corrupt Mcleod, "I KNOW, I KNOW I RESIST !!!!!!!!!!!!"

LOL NO BS!!! 😄😅😆😉😎🤗😋😁🤓😛😖😜😝🙃🤓 This was 1986 and it was a completely different time and place, but this soundtrack with Queen, some songs by Freddy were never met to be released like QUEEN'S COVER OF FRANK SINATRA'S NEW YORK - will unfortunately never be released at the request from Freddy himself. Also there was a warehouse that did house all the final filming archive for the production company which included magazine promotions and different artists posters for the world, also the full negative of the entire film including the original soundtrack tape reel wheel and unfortunately all of this films background and history went up in smoke in a fire that couldn't be saved so... The majority of this film is all that is left, everything from the behind the scenes and background picture stills by and for production company executives - dailies; footage and entertainment type of show for the executives so... There is 2 versions for this film, the US theatrical version and then the REAL ORIGINAL EUROPEAN CUT WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL AND BEST CUT! So look up MINTYS film history on 10 thing's you didn't know about... And you'll find a lot of unanswered questions to a lot of films there! The series format really gave the lore time to flesh out the idea of what it would be like to live forever, for good and bad. Plus, cool sword fights 😉. Christopher Lambert didn’t speak any English when he signed on to do the movie. He worked with a dialogue coach to create a muddled accent. The opening crawl with Connery speaking was done in the bathroom of his villa. The sequel is more of a standalone movie. The insurance company got involved and wanted things added that they thought would make money. Lambert hated the script but was under contract to do it so he got Sean Connery back in it. The rest of the movies are pretty good. Basically whether or not you look at the sequel which there are two versions of ( “The Quickening” and “The Renegade Version”) you should watch the third movie then check out the tv series with Adrian Paul. They created the tv series to regain the rights to the property. Lambert didn’t want to do it so they created a new character. I believe the 5th movie “The Source” explains their existence pretty well. 45:29 it would be interesting for you to watch the sequel but not as a sequel. Watch it as a remake and decide which storyline you would’ve enjoyed them going with.

The director was a music video director and the screenplay was written by a kid at USC and bought for $500 initially but when Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert got invloved, the budget went up and so did his percentage. My friends dad showed me this film one night at a slumber party in 91' and it blew my mind. Unfortunately the sequel turned out to be a major turd.

That's some cool trivia. Yeah, I would've been well into this as a kid. I made a music video reference while watching this as well. He probably wouldn't of been happy as being known as a music director having a stab at movies, so I'm not sure how much he would've appreciated my comment 😅

I love Queen. I love historical fantasy. I love the score-work of Michael Kamen. Loving Highlander is a no-brainer for me. If you're interested in the sequels...be sure. I love them, but they're a mess. It takes some head-canon to make them all fit. For example, Highlander III (which is a near clone of the first one) is set before Highlander II (but you have to watch the Renegade Cut to make it fit better). The fan theory is that at the end of Highlander II (Renegade Cut) Connor has the chance to manipulate his own timeline, which is where the TV series continuity comes from - as suddenly there's hundreds more immortals around after 1986. Set after the series is Highlander: Endgame (aka Highlander IV), then Highlander: The Source (Highlander V) but the latter seriously pushes reasonable limits when it comes to suspension of disbelief, which is why a re-boot has been lingering in development hell for years

This movie is the reason they invented the word BONKERS. Flash Gordon is also BONKERS. Maybe Queen would only do soundtracks for movies that were bonkers.

Weird fact and probably already mentioned in the comments, but Clancy Brown didn't get anything from playing the iconic Villain. Which is a crime imho.

Great movie. Another one I did not know you reacted to. One of the best sci fi sword movies ever made. The sequels are not that good except maybe end game which is decent. Fyi you know the start sequence Sean Conroy recorded in the toilet :) .. A great Sean Connery rip movie is The name of the rose. Another great Christoper Lambert is The Fortress. Other great sword movies are Rob Roy and The Princess Bride.

1st sequel, not that great (I'm being nice here), but I'll still watch it. The 3rd movie completely ignored the 2nd film (good idea). My favorite sequel is Endgame, even though it's a bit bare in total story. I think there are 6 movies in the series + 1 Anime film + a reboot coming soon. Also a TV series that ran for 5 seasons.

Close. It's five live-action movies (Highlander, Highlander 2: The Quickening, Highlander 3: The Sorcerer, Highlander: Endgame and Highlander: The Source), one anime movie (Highlander: The Search for Vengeance), a TV series (6 seasons, not 5), a spin-off series (Highlander: The Raven) and an animated series.

Clancy Brown was the drill Sargent in Starship Troopers, probably where you know him from. Very famous character actor, been in loads of things. People have been taking about the silly accents since the film came out. Highlander is a lot of fun, full of ideas, very 80's, very pop video 80's and all the better for it. I think the word you're looking for is "over-directed". Nah leave sequel alone, its crap.
