That wasn't just a rehab bracelet.... they were bandages around his wrists. He attempted suicide, or at the very least committed self harm. It's probably the darkest twist in the Cornetto Trilogy.
@wittyreviewer
@wittyreviewer 3 жыл бұрын
It's also brilliantly telegraphed early on. Gary is the only one who didnt bring any luggage (which indicates he intended to commit suicide after finishing the mile), he's scruffy faced, probably because he wouldn't have been allowed razors to shave with and he didn't want to roll up his sleeves earlier to prove he was human because then his friends would have seen the bandages. Given the name bracelet, he's probably been in a psych ward for quite a while.

@@wittyreviewer There's also the scene where Peter sees his old school bully at the pub, and Gary mentions the negative effects of bottling up past trauma, which he likely picked up during the counselling sessions. Plus the off-handed mention from Andy in the bathroom that Gary's mother hasn't seen him in 8 months. And then there's this line shortly after they arrived in the town: Andy: Do you have any idea how much trouble we could get in? Gary: You should see how much trouble I'm in now.

The entire flashback at the start of the movie basically tells you what’s going to happen during the whole movie, the parts in the flashback where Oliver and Peter black out and they leave them behind is also at the same points in the actual story that they got replaced by blanks. It's not as funny as the other two films in the Cornetto trilogy, but it has much richer characters, loads of cool action scenes, a brilliant soundtrack that perfectly fits the events of each scene, and a really clever script that (as is usual for these films) is packed full of little moments of foreshadowing, from the names of the pubs, to Gary's monologue in the beginning laying out the events of the crawl as they transpire in the present day. And it is really refreshing to see Simon Pegg and Nick Frost switch their usual roles, so Pegg plays the wildly irresponsible manchild while Frost is the uptight straight man

That monologue playing in the background as we zoom in on Gary's face, a massive epiphany dawning on him, and a smile creeping across his face, then cutting to the opening titles as the fanfare kicks in. Edgar Wright really knows how to use pop songs for the best possible effect

Like the other movies in the Corennato series, they reveal the entire story in the movie DURING the movie For instance, in Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's conversation at the beginning of the movie, tells what happens during the movie. When they talk about a Bloody Mary, the first zombie they come across is covered in blood and has a name tag that says Mary on it In Hot Fuzz, everyone how dies or gets injured, they say what's going to happen to them long before it happens In At World's End, the plot is revealed by the name of the pubs themselves

A funny as this movie is/was I actually felt the opposite. The character of Gary King felt so relatable in a way. The depression and feeling like your life hit a high early on and everything since has been all downhill. . . . That hit me hard. I've had similar feelings (minus the thoughts of suicide), so seeing that play out on screen left me feeling depressed rather than laughing. Seeing Natalie laugh at bits of it, I can see now how it looks though someone's eyes that don't share those feelings and it is rather funny. But The World's End just hit too close to home for me to find it that funny. Well made, well acted, great writing and effects for sure, don't get me wrong. It's just that my personal feelings clouded my appreciation for the comedic aspects of the film. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost team up again in an American made film where the two of them are on a nerdy vacation in the SW US after San Diego Comic-Con and hijinks ensue. The film is titled "Paul" and it's well worth the watch.

It'll NEVER get voted for, because so few know of its existence, but if you want to kinda see where this whole working relationship started, I highly suggest "Spaced" the series. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Edgar Wright, and a bunch of faces that pop up in the Cornetto trilogy. 2 seasons, seven or eight episodes each, and it's this style of writing and direction you like so much.

'It's a stick' ...yep, welcome to the UK. I was a huge fan of the previous films, but I only watched World's End once, while there's a lot of fun to be had the pathos hit a little too close to home personally. I'm sure it's been suggested but you should really check out their sit-com 'Spaced'. Also another fun Simon and Nick outing is 'Paul'. And yes, give 'Scott Pilgrim' a go too.

Haha, you are COLD, Natalie. When Gary said 'It's all I've got' I cried my eyeballs out. The movie is super-funny but it's also a soulcrushingly sad story about addiction / arrested development, and this theme is brought home with this line. THE WORLD'S END refers to several things, among them the forced end of supply / addiction.

This movie is my favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. It's incredibly layered, rewatching is rewarded with new details and new meaning. Not only do the names of the pubs telegraph what's going to happen, there's hints everywhere! Their last names: Gary KING, Andy KNIGHTLEY, Steven PRINCE, Oliver CHAMBERLAIN, Peter PAGE. When they get in the car, Oliver and Peter are hidden behind the heads of Gary and Andy, and so only they (and Steven) are visible hinting that the three make it through the movie. Also, Oliver aka O-man becomes an Omen for his friends. Also, the two attempts at the golden mile parallel each other to a very strong degree. We think we change, but we don't really and even when the townsfolk are literally completely changed (replaced with robots) they don't change either. But Gary stops drinking at the end, so maybe we can change a bit. Oh. So good.
