Something I haven’t seen anyone mention is that Hiccup losing his leg is mean to reflect Toothless’ loss of his tail. The two are symmetrical and it’s honestly a beautiful way to show their bond, it’s also theory that Toothless had to bite off Hiccup’s foot in order to save him, I like it because then both took something from the other but together they are whole

This movie is good because of the big things (music, sweeping panoramas, action scenes) but is GREAT for the small things (toothless' eyes, Stoic's changing tone and posture when just around his son versus being in front of the village (it shows that Stoic cares about Hiccup but doesn't know how to raise/treat him.)). If you missed it, when Stoic walks out he takes a half stumble back realizing he had gone too far but then squares himself to lead the village. One of the theories on Hiccup loosing the leg is that Toothless actually tore/damaged it grabbing him in the fall as it was the first part of him that Toothless could reach.

On Gobber's stone "tooth": he's using the stone to fill in the gap to keep his teeth from getting all screwy. I've got a broken tooth, but no dentist will pull it. Without a bridge, the teeth on either side would shift, loosen, and fall over to fill the gap, causing more problems than the broken tooth already is. So Gobber using a false tooth is pretty advanced dentistry for their society. Besides How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda trilogies, I love Rise Of The Guardians. It often gets overlooked, but it was made in the middle of DreamWorks' hot streak, when they were making the best animated films ever

However, the 3rd film is extremely repetitive in its themes, identity issues and existential crises, not to mention Po is essentially the same character after 3 movies as he was in the first. There is no real personal growth, only the accumulation of more abilities. Something you can't say of Hiccup or the other main characters in the HTTYD trilogy.

Oh man...this movie... As a film junkie, one of the best acted and animated films (the whole trilogy, for that matter) in recent times. But damn does it hold a place in my heart. Had to move for a new job and asked some old friends if could room with them. They had just brought their newborn home, but agreed since my share of bills would really help. Was with them for about 3 years until something better came up, but then that fell through after few years. Managed to get something else lined up in the old town and asked if could move back in with them. Since we were great friends, it was a 'how fast you gonna get here?' By then, this was their daughter's favorite movie. Like...at least twice a day. One night, after finishing it and trying to get her off to bed, her mom asked "Dragons is really good, but why do you want to watch it so much?" Kiddo, with all the 6/7 yo happiness and energy "Because it's Uncle Cajun's favorite too!" (because that was nickname everyone called me, being from SE TX and living in Oklahoma). Me "I mean...you mom is right, it's good. But we can watch other movies if you want." Kid "No! You aren't related, but you're my favorite Uncle. We love this movie!"

I'll never forget my first time watching this movie. I graduated high school 2010 and was about to start college FOR 3D Animation. I had recently been diagnosed with autism and severe PTSD, so seeing someone like Hiccup getting the respect and dignity he deserves, him bonding with Toothless (dinosaurs and dragons were a huge fixation for me as a child and now I know it was my autism that made me hyperfixate) and then....he becomes disabled. This movie I think just might be perfect due to the way the story moves. The shows are all FOR bridging the movies together and are excellent. Everyone comes back to recast their characters in show AND movie. And everything is explained while building up character relationships. I adore Hiccup not only because I see myself struggling growing up too, but also because his biggest weapon isn't his intellect. It's his empathy. Staring into Toothless' eyes made him have empathy for a reptile, one of the most common demonized animals due to how humans fear their eyes and skin. And he risked his life several times trying to protect Toothless from humans, and Toothless does so in kind. Without that empathy, none of this was possible. Thank you for watching this and being so honest and open with the audience. I cry at the end every time and it's nice to see this movie really get people with really experiencing those feelings.

Maybe people already know this,, but right after Stoick says the "you're not a Viking, you're not my son." line and he leaves the Great Hall, he literally recoils or staggers from the guilt and how much it hurt to take it that far. Cause Stoick does care about Hiccup!!! But he always prioritises Berk over his son and that's his mistake. The fact that the movie takes time before this scene to establish that Stoick **NEVER** falters, never hesitates not even when his 3 ships returned with 1, but the first time you see him actually hesitating and struggling with his emotions is because of his son. It's so important and it shows that Stoick CARES. He's a bad parent, good intentions horrible execution and it makes Stoick's change of mind so much better to see when he accepts Hiccup just the way he is. HTTYD 2 really helps to explain why Stoick is so close-minded and overprotective of Berk, and why he is so strongly against Hiccup's "no killing" ideology to the extent of embarrassing Hiccup and ostracising him in Berk. He was not completely like this before.

I'd say that this movie is less about finding yourself (although that theme is certainly present), and more about listening. Stoick plays the role of the main antagonist in this one. And the thing that makes him the antagonist is his inability to listen. Especially to Hiccup. He talks over him, and never tries to see the world as Hiccup sees it. Meanwhile, Hiccup learns how to train your dragon BECAUSE he listens. He does the work to understand them, and he and Toothless work together so well because they learn to listen to each other. And then the entire final act of the movie is kicked off by Stoick refusing to listen to Hiccup's warnings about the dragon island. So he went in unprepared. But the teens are able to work together and save the village because they DID listen to Hiccup.

I just realized that everytime Stoic looks at his son after the big climax he has to be faced with the consequences of his actions. He was irrational and didn't want to listen to anything his son said even tho he knew about dragons more, he wanted to "prove he was a real powerful man" and it almost cost him his son, but it did cost his son his leg. Any time he's faced with the chance to be stubborn he has to look at his son and realize what he could lose if he doesn't think.

This is this really good video out there about why the opening number of HTTYD has the best opening ever and if you love the music so much you should totally check it out. You should also see if you can find some clips from How to Train Your Dragon: Live Spectacular, they took all the music and all the characters and made it on-stage production with animatronic dragons. DreamWorks has some incredible movies with equally amazing music. The Prince of Egypt (with its catchy and moving songs) and Spirit, stallion of the Cimarron (which did an epic thing where the only time you hear instruments is when there are people on screen, and as it is set mostly in the unsettled west, most of the music is made by through technology) are some of the best. As a newer subscriber, I hope it's OK if I make one more recommendation to add to your likely already long list. Aside from the prince of Egypt and spirit, you should totally check out Disney's Atlantis: the lost Empire. It is a criminally underrated film surprisingly diverse cast for its time period; it is an epic and the action-adventure movie Disney should be putting at the top of the live-action list.
