Shrek Movie Description:
After purchasing the rights to Steig's book in 1991, Steven Spielberg planned to produce a traditionally-animated film based on the book, but John H. Williams convinced him to bring the project to the newly founded DreamWorks in 1994. Jeffrey Katzenberg began active development of the film in 1995 immediately following the studio's purchase of the rights from Spielberg. Chris Farley was originally cast as the voice for the title character, recording nearly all of the required dialogue. After Farley died in 1997 before his work on the film was finished, Mike Myers was hired to voice the character, eventually settling on giving Shrek a Scottish accent. The film was initially intended to be created using motion capture, but after poor test results, the studio hired Pacific Data Images to complete the final computer animation.
Shrek premiered at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or, making it the first animated film since Disney's Peter Pan (1953) to be chosen to do so. The film was theatrically released by DreamWorks Pictures in the United States on May 18, 2001, and grossed $484 million worldwide against a production budget of $60 million, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2001. It was widely praised by critics for its animation, voice performances, soundtrack, writing and humor, which critics noted simultaneously catered to both adults and children. Shrek was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It earned six award nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), winning BAFTA's Best Adapted Screenplay.
The film's success helped establish DreamWorks Animation as a prime competitor to Pixar in feature film computer animation. Three sequels were released-Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010)-along with a spin-off film and other productions within the Shrek franchise. In 2020, Shrek was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Plans for a fifth film were originally cancelled but were revived in 2016, although the project has since stalled and has yet to begin production.

Ironically Disney owns Dream Works now and will ruin Shrek 5, like Disney does. Puss in boots 2 was so Disney, it had nothing of what made this franchise special. Shrek was cool because it was also for adults, Puss in boots 2 was for pre-teens.

It's even better: Lord Farquaad (pronounced "F---wad") is a blatant charicature of Michael Eisner, who was head of Disney back then and the reason Dreamworks even exists (a lot of people walked away from Disney thanks to Eisner being awful even for a corporate CEO). If I'm not mistaken, it was Jeffery Katzenberg, who went against Robin's wishes for promoting Aladdin. Robin refused to play Genie in Return of Jafar due to this, then Jeffery had a major blowout with Disney, took some employees and formed DreamWorks. Robin refused to be Shrek, but interestingly enough went back to Disney to play Genie for Aladdin and the King of Theives.

I love the way Fiona looks when she sees what Shrek looks like. Because her true love was supposed to reacue her. And among all men who came, an orge was the first to succeed. Since she was both, ogre and princess, she was sort of disappointed in herself becsuse her true loves kiss would reveal her real self. And she always got told to be a beautiful human princess and now got saved by an ogre. It was her moment of realization. Like with shrek, she enjoyed blowing up animal-baloons and even licked her fingers off after collecting a fly-web for shrek. Means she doesnt mind it when shes being an ogre. With shrek, she just embraced herself. Fun fact, Shrek was a project to punish animators for being late etc. who were actually working on Prince of Egypt. Basically Shrek was supposed to be the lesser success and turn out to be a classic instead. A punishment that backfired 😂😂

11:50 The dragon fed her the knight’s that would come and rescue her before Shrek went to go rescue donkey if you look closely, there’s a big giant cookbook and a pot that she uses to cook them in and the dragon knew she could transform into an ogre so she knew that she would like it.

Growing up in a Blackfeet/Siksika family, it was refreshing to see a native as a main human character in an animated movie. The horse However was great as well. I just wish that music was from someone Indigenous like Luka Brown or the Late-Great Jim Boyd.

I used to remember my mother used to own her a VHS video machine. When I was little I used to live in an apartment and The first movie I thought I first watch on VHS was Peter Pan (1953), Scooby Doo Where are you, she had for me and then it was the Incredible (2004) at home. Coming home after my mother pick me up from Pre-K-1 school and couldn't wait to see it when I got home. I first discover Shrek 2 before with my Puss in Boot Spanish Cat which was my favorite all out of desperados. Then I had watch the last trailer of Puss in Boot (2022) with the spin-off.

Of course, the "Donkey is Eddie Murphy. Eddie tuned down the title role of the fish in "Nemo" which was a big hit and he was not going to make the same mistake twice.

A Canadian playing an ogre with a Scottish accent. Actually, his parents were Scottish and the parent characters in So I Married An Axe Murderer were based on his real life parents. It's a really underrated dark comedy from 1993. It just came out at the wrong time. Anything remotely dark in the 80s and 90s was pretty much treated like garbage. The Cable Guy is a good example. People wanted their Batman Forevers. They would have run away from the theatre screaming at The Dark Knight and especially The Batman. Even James Bond movies weren't taken very seriously at all. Timothy Dalton showed up in 1987and freaked everyone out by being too gritty and realistic. That's why everyone loves Brosnan. He fit the time period better. I prefer Dalton, but I also liked Connery. I want my comic book movies comic booky and my live action movies live...actiony.

Love the re-watch! Its fun catching joke you didnt get as a kid. Though I was an adult when this one came out, lol...my favorite animation growing up is still one of my favorites I still watch several times a year: The Last Unicorn. I always recommend it. 2 voices you may recognize in the film is Jeff Bridges and Angela Lansbury.

By the way, the other fairytale characters in the Shrek movies are not actually originally Disney properties. They are in the public domain since many (like Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel) are originally Grimm Fairytales, Pinocchio originally being a story by Carol Collodi, and Peter Pan originally being a story by J.M. Barrie.
