This movie is pretty great, thanks for reacting to it~ In the book, his friends weren't as angry and the crowd watching wasn't there at the end. Those changes bothered me but other than that, still solid. You also might be interested in knowing that when the book was released for a while, people were going after the author that a straight person shouldn't be writing queer character perspectives. So she felt immense pressure because of it and eventually was forced to come out as bisexual. It was disgusting behavior from people who did not understand the point of the story.
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
Thank you for letting me know a little bit more about the book, I'm actually considering buying it to read myself. And I did hear about what happened to the author actually not too long ago. It's really unfortunate that people still feel like they have the right to know someone's sexuality, or just assume someone is straight just because they won't say otherwise. I have queer-adjacent friends who prefer to be unlabeled and the amount of times people had tried to "guess" or even outright say what their sexuality "should be" is embarrassing.
@torijeri5 ай бұрын
And even after this people didn’t learn cus they came after Kit Connor for playing a bisexual character in heartstopper as a “straight man” and forced him to come out too. We’re not owed anyone’s sexuality. He was also immediately labeled straight after holding hands with a girl. People really missed the entire point of Heartstopper like Alice said in response. Bi-erasure is still going strong today sadly and people think forcing people out of the closet is some form of “progress”? weirdos the lot of them

I also cried in the Mom scene but I was bawling with his Dad’s scene (I don’t know why seeing Men cry affects me more 🤷♀️). This is one of my comfort films as well. Oh and I love your edits and of course your reactions ☺️

In the book, Cal (the theatre kid) is also bisexual! And he was interested in simon too, he actually asked him out after simon got outted. But simon by then was already in love with blue, so it didn't come to anything. Also there were more clues as to who was blue and gave him more backstory too. Also there's a second book in which lea and abby figure out they're not straight and actually end up together!! I haven't read it but I've heard things about it. As someone whohas read the book like 3 times, even though obviously the book is always better than the movie (you get more scenes, more subplots and more development), still this movie is one of my favourite book-to-movie adaptations, right along with perks of being a wallflower. I think they did a great job with it!
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
Oh my god, I need to read the book on Abby and Lea! Probably after I read the first book - which I've been convinced to now purchase because from your comment and others, it seems like it was a lot more detailed. It's really cool though, that despite the book being more detailed, the movie is still one of your favorite adaptations! I feel like most adaptations are hard to please those who've read the source material. I haven't read or seen Perks of Being a Wallflower but I may be doing a reaction to it soon!
@ttrblmkr5 ай бұрын
@@KristinaEspinoza yes!! I really do recommend the book, and its a really quick read too bc its not that long. Also you really should do a reaction to the perks of being a wallflower, not only is it a great adaptation but one of my favourite movies ever! It also has queer themes in it, and overall is just a great movie, would love to see you react to it!

@luisellaasis18605 ай бұрын
I watched this movie years ago when it came out and I had recently accepted being queer myself. I honestly didn’t like it a lot solely bc of the way his friends reacted and how that was never really resolved from what I remember, they just became friends again without apologizing or owning up to Simon for the way they acted and making him being outed entirely about themselves offering absolutely no comfort or help. However, rewatching it now, even though I still feel the same way about that, I do think the movie portrays a strong message about self discovery and the importance of being able to come out on your own terms and time, and at the time this was one of the most popular (and few tbh) gay movies so it is appreciated for what it did back then. And also, I would love to see you react to all three seasons of Love, Victor! All stories are amazing and also have great messages to tell, Simon and Bram shortly appear on it as well. With all that being said hope you’re having a great day / night!
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
I wasn't sure how to feel about his friends reactions, but I kept telling myself it was probably because they're teenagers - but after reading some reviews from those who read the book - it turns out their reaction is a lot different in the book than in the movie, so I'm still not sure how to feel lol. I remember when the movie came out - it was such a big deal for a queer film like this to exist at the time. Honestly surprised I've put off seeing it for such a long time considering that. And I've actually decided to react to Love, Victor! The reactions will be coming in the near future but they're scheduled. :)

In the book, Martin also wrote an apology letter to Simon, and he mentioned how his gay brother was disappointed in him for doing that to Simon. Simon never forgave him, and I wouldn't say that Martin was redeemed. A lot of fans of the movie/book still hate Martin. I think the way Martin is portrayed in the movie/book is interesting because he's not really the typical villain stereotype. He's a goofy, theatre kid who may come across as friendly, but can also be a selfish, dumb creep who outed someone. He did apologize and felt remorse, but what he did was still despicable, and unforgivable to some. So I can understand your conflicted feelings towards him.
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
That's so interesting - I remembered Martin mentioning his brother being gay, but they never followed up on that in the movie, so I assumed it was just a big lie he made to rile up Simon. Thank you for letting me know there was more to that! Exactly - I didn't think of him as an evil bad guy, but just a very misguided teenager who did a bad thing that some would find incredibly unforgivable. All you could hope for would be that he learns from it and grows up into a more responsible adult.

I loved this movie -- watched it several times over a couple of years. Recently, my son told me about the book. I liked it even more. Less emphasis on the asshole blackmailer and more on Simon and his friends and family. The movie indicates that Simon is telling the story; the book is written entirely from Simon's point of view -- first person narrative throughout. And Simon is funny! Someone else in the comments here mentioned that the author got the same treatment that Kit Connor (Nick on Heartstopper) got, with a similar result (a teenager bullied into outing himself as bisexual.) At the end of the book, the author names all of the people who helped her on writing and publishing the book Her sources included the clinicians and volunteers at the CNMC Gender and Sexuality Program. AND she stated that she wrote the book for the LGBT and gender-non-conforming children and teens in her life (and their families) .
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
Ooo~ You're making me consider buying the book. I'm already curious about it but from how you describe it, it seems really good! I like that she wrote it for the LGBTQ+ and GNC children and teens in her life. That's very sweet. And it's very unfortunate that both she and Kit Connor got similar treatments when it came to them representing the queer community, although in different ways. No one should be forced to out themselves.

I think I should give this movie a chance. I didn't because I'd heard that Simon, after being outted himself, sort of then forced Blue to come out and that made me really uncomfortable but I think seeing this review makes me less nervous about the whole movie and I might have to watch it now. As always, love seeing your reactions and love watching you guess 😂 it's always everyone's a suspect
@KristinaEspinoza5 ай бұрын
I could totally see the perspective of "Simon outing Blue" but I think the line Bram gives Simon about "I wasn't sure I had it in me until I saw you" is supposed to indicate to the audience that he chose to do it, simply because of how much he had fallen for Simon up to that point. We do surprising things when we're in love. I'm glad you love watching my reactions! And yes lmaoooo everyone is a suspect to me apparently

i’ll always bash the friends. like it wasn’t about them. sure he tried to keep nick away from abby but that’s CAUSE he was being blackmailed and he told them that. but the other friend he’s been friends with for years, her reasoning is stupid lol. he genuinely thought she was in love with nick so why was she mad. i get that it was bad that he set her up with nick knowing nick liked abby. but for them to abandon him when he needed the support of his friends THE MOST was so so shtty and selfish. and the fact they never apologised even for not standing up for him at the cafeteria really pissed me off
