It’s important that current and future generations understand the shockwave this performance created. It not only launched Michael into super-stardom, it had a significant cultural impact. It was the first time, on a global scale, that non-black teens by the millions were idolizing a black artist. Kids in predominantly white suburbia wanted to dress like him, move like him and, most importantly, they wanted to buy his music. It was a seismic shift in the culture.

I don't think any black artists have come close since then. Whitney, Prince, Beyonce, Usher, and Janet are close, but they didn't reach the level Michael went to!

I was 12 years old and my whole family was sitting in front of the tv watching this. Michael pulled out that Moonwalk and our mouths fell on the floor! The next day EVERYONE was talking about it ( even segments on the National news broadcasts) and EVERYONE was trying to Moonwalk! It was a sensation and I could only sort of do it in my socks!! He could dance and sing at the same time. Better than anyone else. However as this was a Motown Anniversary, he was not allowed to sing live for Billie Jean as that was not a Motown song. This was at the tail end of he and the Jackson Five did a medley of their biggest hits together and Michael sang live on those. You owe it to yourself to look for the full segment. Watching Michael perform live is the full gift on display. He gave 110% each time. A unique and magical musical genius and an incredible stellar human being‼️❣️🌹✌️🦋🎶. Don't stop now. You have lots of live performances to get to!

Funny to think about the fact that Motown refused to even play the instrumental live, what's even funnier than that is that MJ only accepted to be in there in the first place if they let him perform his new song, Billie Jean, Motown accepted and then they pulled out the "Hah, this ain't our song so we ain't playing it live :)" lmao

Everyone was like I want to do that ... wait, HOW DID HE DO THAT? IT WAS AWESOME! Michael Jackson was so HOT back then. Everybody wanted to dance like him, be like him, and definitely dress like him. I remember the sparkling silver glove he was wearing. Everybody started wearing one glove after that. What a performance! What a performer! Haze, you really should do a reaction video to THRILLER!!!! With MJ, there’s no need to separate the artist from his personal life. He was a great humanitarian and for anyone that thinks Leaving Neverland is so overwhelming, just check what John Ziegler had to say about it (when he was totally ready to believe the whole story). Then take time to watch Square One. I mean if you sit through 4 hours of LN, you can also take an hour to watch Square One, right? 😊

No doubting Michael Jackson's talent as a dancer (copied by many artists), Great Singer but also a Great Songwriter. I know you should never go against a popular misconception. But that isn't a Moonwalk, Moonwalks are a slow stepping forward motion. What he was doing was the Mime's impression of being blown backwards by the Wind.
