Stephen King was such a fan of Kathy Bates performance in this that he ended up writing another story just for her in a film called “Delorose Claiborne” which is very good as well. A dark story but much different than Misery. Definitely worth reacting to.

Cockadoodie!! I kid you not, Mozy, Annie Wilkes is one of _the_ most terrifying characters I have ever seen on film and Kathy Bates certainly deserved that Oscar full time! I think King himself has stated it is one of his favorite film adaptations and his personal favorite character among all those he created in his long, looong career. So King has waaay too many film / series adaptations to list but out of more underrated ones from the 80s I would recommend _Christine_ , _The Dead Zone_ , _Children of the Corn_ , _Pet Semetary_ and _Sleepwalkers_ ! Whew, even this is too much, haha! And scary elements aside, your laughter at some of the more bizarre and wacky elements was so very genuine and from the heart! I am definitely checking out more of your comedy reactions!
Annie Wilkes scared the cacadoodie out of everyone back in the day! Kathy Bates gave one of the best performances of all time. She was so familiar but at the same time so frightening. She's like the maniac that hides in plain sight. Creepy! Glenn Close in 1987's Fatal Attraction is another one that is legendary.

"Misery" certainly keeps you on edge, because 1) you never know when Annie Wilkes is going to flip out and 2) we are praying for Paul Sheldon to find some way to get out of there. When you think Annie can't sink any lower into insanity, she does, as Paul discovers in the course of the story. As for the hobbling scene and Buster's death, those are two scenes I simply cannot watch. to this day. Kudos to Kathy Bates and James Caan for their stellar performances and thank you for reacting to this movie. If you haven't seen/reacted to "Titanic" (1997), check it out--Kathy Bates has a far more sympathetic role in that epic masterpiece.

In the US, it’s always fun to see some of our younger people reacting to Misery when they’ve only seen Kathy Bates in her sweet, protagonist roles. They are shocked to see her act so psychotic! For the older generations, this is often the first movie we saw her in. She wasn’t a household name yet when Misery hit the theaters. If you’ve seen the movie Titanic (1997), then you’ve also seen Kathy Bates playing passenger Molly Brown.

Re: how did he light match with his fingernail Most all matches these days are called ‘safety matches’, designed to only ignite when you strike them across the sandpaper-like texture on a box or book of matches that contains ingredients that must be combined with the safety match head to cause ignition. The one Paul used is called a ‘strike anywhere’ match in which all the ingredients are contained within the match head and only needs friction to ignite. As you can imagine (and by the opposite name of the “safety matches’) the ‘strike anywhere’ matches are dangerous, as anything, like flicking your fingernail across the head could set them off.

Kathy Bates is a phenomenal actress... she's really great in pretty much everything she does. Another movie you should check out is Dolores Claiborne. This was another Stephen King book-turned-movie and he specifically wrote the character of Dolores Claiborne with her in mind. So of course, she stars in the film version of the book. It's more of a thriller than a horror and she's so good in it. You should also check out Fried Green Tomatoes - this one is a drama if you want a break from scary stuff. She stars in this also. Jessica Tandy, her co star was nominated for an Academy Award for that film and Kathy should have been. She did get a Golden Globe and a BAFTA nomination out of it. She was also in Titanic, if you haven't seen it yet... a much smaller role there, but it's a good movie.
