Sally Field is just so great. This movie is nearly 40 years old and I'm STILL mad that she didn't even get an Oscar nomination for this role. I don't know how they could have overlooked her performance here.

The movie was based on a play written by one of “Shelby’s” brothers. He makes a cameo as the preacher. Also, his mother was there as well. The nurses who turned off the life support in the movie really attended to his sister. They tried to discourage his mother from being there the day they filmed the death scene but she said she wanted to be there to see Julia Roberts get up out of bed afterwards, something her daughter hadn’t been able to do.

@@mozyflicks You are most welcome. Sally Field is one of my all time favorites. A few other great movies of hers are “Places in the Heart” 1984 and “Eye for an Eye” 1996. A warning about the second suggestion is it deals with a difficult subject but her performance is outstanding.

It's funny watching an Australian reacting to a movie taking place in the south with southern characters. I'm from Louisiana (which is where the movie takes place). There are so many people I know back home with a very strong southern accent. So strong that it would sometimes be mistaken for an Australian accent by a non-southerner for some reason lol. I have a friend who has been one of my best friends since middle school. He has a very strong southern accent. Whenever he goes on coast to coast business trips across the US, he would sometimes get mistaken for an Australian haha.

Aww what a delight to see you react to this wonderful film! I'm glad you seemed to love it as much as many of us do. I do have a couple of recommendations for you (But I want you to note that I've been very good and haven't added to you list in a while!) First, since you said you want a full-on comedy, I highly recommend "What's Up Doc?" (1972) starring Barbra Streisand and a very young and handsome Ryan O'Neal. It is pure, screwball comedy all the way through, and I think you'd love it. Also, now knowing that you love Juila Roberts, I highly recommend the movie Erin Brockovich (2000). It's not a comedy, though it has a few funny moments, but not really a tearjerker either--more of an underdog story and a true story on top of that. Have a great weekend, Mozy!

There were two cakes, yes. Depending on where you are, a "groom's cake" can be traditional. In the hair salon that's what they called it. The Groom's Cake. That was the armadillo. Edit: it's not the child that is in danger from the pregnancy, unless you count miscarriage. It's the mother. it could kill her, as we have seen with this movie. This is based on a true story, btw. It was written up first as a stage play then adapted to a movie.

Catch the play sometime if you can, or watch a filmed version of the play on KZbin! It takes place entirely in the beauty shop and the 6 main women are the only actors present. This is a lovely surprise to start my morning! So, a little back story; the brother of the real life Shelby, whose name was Susan, was inspired to write a play about his sister because her husband remarried just 6 months after she passed and the brother heard his nephew call the new wife mama. He did not want his sister to be forgotten as his nephew grew up.

People from other countries really need to stop believing in American stereotypes. Yes we have a lot of guns, but that doesn't mean we all have guns. I getting pretty sick of hearing that. I am 60 years old, I have lived in 6 states and I have only known 2 people, my whole life that own a gun. The same people own many guns, the vast majority of us don't own one at all. You watch our movies and tv shows...do you see everyone carrying around a gun? That is like saying that all Brits have bad teeth, drink tea all day and are gay. Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it. Your ignorant comment "of course they all have a gun" lost you a viewer. Educate yourself before you speak.
