Fun fact: When they were filming this, all castles in the region they were filming in were "owned" by the government - except one. They applied to the government for permission to film at one or more castles, but we're denied. The owner of the privately owned castle gave them permission, so every castle you see (other than the model) is that one castle filmed each time from a different perspective.

The odd thing about their humor is that they don't usually make crazy logical jumps during the sketch. Most of the flaws are built into the premises at the beginning of the sketch and then the characters proceed fairly reasonably. But the initial flaws are not corrected, so they grow. Thus the flaws grow in logical progression into huge crevices that dominate the story. You can generally predict the next small event or line but it is harder to guess where it is going in the end. It's that "Oh my god, they went there" realization followed by "Well, I guess that had to go there".

It's British absurdist humor. Apart from being a film about King Arthur and the search for the Grail it's also a commentary on film-making itself. Making movies is expensive so they opted not to pay for real horses and they made a joke out of that. Sir Lancelot running over and over shows what happens when the director doesn't get the coverage shots needed to show his progress. Also the animated bits of God and the weather and the Legendary Black Beast of Arrgh! They didn't have money for a huge battle scene so then ended on a joke, a literal 'cop out'. The presence of the historian was an anachronism, he didn't belong in the film. Anything goes in a Python movie. The 6 members of the troupe all played multiple roles which is why they look so familiar. Each was a college graduate so they're very intelligent, that's why we got the reference to the Trojan horse, the plague and the spoof of the Bible in the reading of the Book of Armaments.

The weird flagellants are chanting words from "Dies irae" (Day of Wrath); Pie Iesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Translation; Lord, all-pitying, Jesus blest, Grant them Thine eternal rest. The song and dance routine is a callback to the 1967 musical "Camelot" with Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. The film was based on the earlier stage musical. I've seen a few reactions to this film and it's always surprising how Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" as well as all the other legends seem to have vanished or at least become diminished. The Arthurian mythos draws on Christianity as well - the temptations of saints, the grail used by Jesus at the Last Supper, certain virtues, and so on. At the start of the first volume of his war memoirs, Spike Milligan quotes Thucydides' "History of the Peloponnesian War" and adds a bit; "I have described nothing but what I saw myself, or learned from others of whom I made the most careful and particular enquiry. Thucydides. Peloponnesian War. I’ve just jazzed mine up a little. Milligan. World War II." The Monty Python team certainly jazzed up the legends of King Arthur. Assur was the capital of Assyria. Both pronunciations of "sloth" are correct. One of the early iterations of the scripts had Arthur and his Knights finding the Holy Grail in Harrod's. Apparently you can find everything in Harrod's.

Great reaction and I hope you continue on with their other films. Life of Brian and Meaning of Life, both of absolute classic and amazing original songs in them, all written and performed by these silly English bastards. I also highly encourage you to watch some of their most infamous and hilarious skits from their series Flying Circus, like Dead Parrot, Spanish Inquisition, Lumberjack, Ministry of Silly Walks, Self defense against fresh fruit and Cheese Shop!!! The trick is to watch the originals and not the reshoots they did years later for their last film, And Now For Something Completely Different. They're still good, but the originals just have that extra indescribable something extra that's missing from the ones shot for the movie. I would also like to suggest a couple of can't miss BBC classic comedies you should check out and might want to react to, like Fawlty Towers with John Cleese of the Python boys, Black Adder with Rowan Atkinson aka Mr Bean, though I suggest you skip the first season and start with the second. Black Adder changes time periods each season following the descendants of the characters from the show, so you're not missing out on any plot etc. it's the only show where I suggest people skip a season. Father Ted is another amazing comedy series that you should look into.

Slough Trading Estate is the largest industrial estate in single private ownership in Europe with over 17,000 jobs in 400 businesses.[8] Blackberry, McAfee, Burger King, DHL, Telefonica and Lego have head offices in the town. Monty Python were the 4Chan trolls of their time. This movie has a "cop-out" ending. 😉 This is (old school) British humor. It's very dry and takes some getting used to. Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969) was a sketch comedy show, so of course their first movie is a bunch of scenes tied together by a loose plot. I think you'll like Life Of Brian (1979) and The Meaning Of Life (1983) much better. If you love this movie, then Yellowbeard (1983) should be on your list (since everyone else will be recommending other Monty Python movies). Not technically a Monty Python film, but it was a Graham Chapman's (King Arthur) passion project and the humor is similar. Fun Fact: The famous depiction of galloping horses by using coconut shells (a traditional radio-show sound effect) came about from the purely practical reason that the production simply could not afford real horses.

Oh yes, they trolled the audience for sure. I'll look into those you recommended. Clever, I loved the effect - I want some of my own coconuts now.

IBWM ...I love how this movie is one of the few movies that had the balls to prove that a mob accused witch was an actual witch and they burn her (not shown), instead of the normal trope that you would see otherwise. Monty Python was extremely subversive. That scene is a perfect example of their out-of-the-box thinking.

I have found that Australians "get" the humour more readily than Americans. I was exposed to British humour at a young age via our local PBS (Public Broadcasting System) channels, and Monty Python's Flying Circus was a staple for me on Saturday nights. Most Americans just don't get the "dry" humour that exemplifies British television of the era (the 1970s), but having been exposed to it at an early age, I found it hilarious, while my peers were wondering what was wrong with me. It's even funnier watching younger Americans being exposed to this stuff with absolutely no context whatsoever. One reaction channel didn't even know that Monty Python was a comedy troupe, rather than a single person. That video cracks me up to the point I watch it every few months since she posted it. Her reaction is just that hilarious! Especially the ending where Arthur and company get arrested. It literally makes their mind explode.

Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin. He was not in the least bit scared To be mashed into a pulp. Or to have his eyes gouged out, And his elbows broken. To have his kneecaps split And his body burned away, And his limbs all hacked and mangled Brave Sir Robin. His head smashed in And his heart cut out And his liver removed And his bowls unplugged And his nostrils raped And his bottom burnt off And his penis.... "That's err,... that's enough music for now lads,... looks like there's dirty work afoot." and then the entrance to the cave scene the the Death Bunny just absolutely kills me LMFAO 😂🤣🤣😂 TIM : TO LATE!... 9:22 - *“Why're they whacking their heads.”* They're flagellants. Those were religious orders who believed that pain and suffering brought you closer to Jesus, and hence God. They would whip themselves, burn themselves, etc. Before you think that this is just ridiculous medieval silliness, belief systems like this persist to this very day. For example this sort of idolisation of pain and suffering is why Mother Theresa's "hospitals" did not allow any form of pain medication or palliative treatment - the purpose was not primarily to _heal_ people, but to allow them to _suffer_ in peace, so they could become more holy. 33:52 - *“What the hell did I just watch?”* Yes, that is the typical reaction to this movie. Other symptoms may include bafflement, denial, excessive giggling, and quoting lines from this movie repeatedly for the rest of your life.
