One of the more underrated aspects of this hilariously beautiful piece of work is the music selection. Whether it's to accentuate comedic moments (the first motel Del and Neal go to, when Neal gets loses it at the airport parking lot.. and the cut after Neal gets picked up by his nuts soon after the trek, etc.), or the dramatic ones (well, you know the ones), the music is super 80s but super cool ❤

I watch this movie every Thanksgiving. The cool thing is that John Hughes based this story off a personal experience he had a few years earlier. He flew from Chicago to New York for a one day business trip, planned to fly home that night, his flight was rerouted to Wichita Kansas, and it took him 5 days to get back home to Chicago.

A possible explanation for why you sensed an 'asshole' vibe is that in the original script there are earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. They filmed with that storyline intact so perhaps Steve was directed to play it with a 'nasty' undertone that wasn't needed once the affair sub plot was axed in editing ? It certainly had an effect on his wives performance which has always felt a little off to me before I knew about the original script. When Neal finally makes it home and actually has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" with such relief at 32:15 and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos.

One of the best comedies of the 80s. John Hughes did so many fantastic films back then Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, The Home Alone films and many more. The plot here lends itself to great comedy scenarios with Steve Martin as the straight guy, and John Candy as the clown. Funniest part is when the car catches fire. I saw this at the cinema on release, and the audience were nearly choking with laughter. A very poignant ending when we realise Del's wife has died and he is in fact homeless. A shame too that John Candy died so young at only 44 and indeed John Hughes himself died very young only 59. Still he left a great legacy of films, of which this was one of his best.

Past few reactions of this movie I noticed John Candy (Dell Griffith) has a black eye after the car fire. He was slugged in the gut by Neil not hit in the face so there must be a cut scene where he was hit in the eye. Did you know there is a scene at the end of the credits? It is one of the few 80s movies to have one. Neil's boss is still at the office looking at the same poster boards with his turkey dinner on his desk.

Wichita is in Kansas, so south and west of Chicago, I am guessing 600 miles. Flying in the 80s was so much more relaxed. You could get to the airport thirty minutes before your flight and not feel too stressed.

@@RyanCarrington I kind of hate it, but have adjusted somewhat through the years. Between 2011-15 I was flying a lot, was one flight that I am completely convinced nearly went into the Potomac River heading into DC. I still don’t like the physical sensation of losing altitude but I kind of have reached the place where I accept my death probably won’t Be as awful/exciting as a plane crash. Anyway, this is a lovely movie, one of my favorites.
