The Yautjas (aka predators) are warriors who have been hunting in the Universe for millions of years (there's a T-Rex skull in the ship at the end). They hunt dangerous prey, but they have a code of honor: no children, no pregnant women even if they're carrying a weapon (Leona), and no weak or unarmed men. When a human succeeds in the feat of killing one of their own, as Mike did, they show him profound respect by offering him a gift.

Eatly scripts for Predator 2 had Dutch leading rhe team eventually led by Gary Busey and Adam "Jayne Cobb" Baldwin. It was a much different script. Dutch would have survived, for one thing. And he, not the cop, was the lead character. Dutch's team would have been wiped out, and he and the cop would have been the sole survivors. Arnie was running for political office at the time and bowed out as a result. So the movie got reworked. Danny Glover, straight off of Lethal Weapon, got the lead, and his cop role got expanded to cover much of the prior "Dutch" action. The cop had previously been the #2 character, not the lead, though he would have still been the one in the ship at the end...

What gets missed alot by a younger person watching today is that while it was released in 1990, the film is set in a dystopic 1997 and was emulating films like Robocop. Whie yes, crime was grabbing headlines in 1990, a lot was based on paranoia. Films depicting out of control crime making day to day life unlivable was a staple of a lot of "fifteen minutes into the future" type sci fi, again, especially after Robocop.

Adding the xenomorph skull to the display was just an Easter egg the set designers put in to excite the geeks but - at the time - was not meant to connect the two space franchises. However, the inclusion of the skull created such excitement that a comic book series was created to join the two. And for many years that was all the fans had, a series of B&W comics by a small independent publisher. But the fans kept pushing for 20th Century Fox to make a film based on the premise. It took 14 years to bring the two alien species together on the big screen! That being said, looking forward to your reaction to "Prey."
@carybrown851
@carybrown851 Жыл бұрын
One correction... the comic series did this BEFORE the movie did. Dark Horse comics just happened to have the rights to do series with both franchises. They saw it as a good fit, so the did a series with both. (And many more later.) But this movie "canonized" the crossover. Dark Horse did a lot of crossovers, as have many other comics publishers since then. Batman vs. Predator, Green Lantern meets Star Trek, Star Trek meets Doctor Who, you name it. So far, this is the only comics crossover formally canonized, however, as far as I know anyway.
@peterkoester7358
@peterkoester7358 Жыл бұрын
@@carybrown851 I couldn't remember the exact timeline. I did remember the addition of the skull in Predator 2 was only meant as an in-joke at the time. I used to read some of the Dark Horse Aliens comics - particularly their story of what happened after Ripley and Newt returned to Earth following the events of the second film and how that made a much better sequel story than what was eventually released as Alien3.
@carybrown851
@carybrown851 Жыл бұрын
@@peterkoester7358 Did you know that the script for Alien3 was originally written as a sequel to the first movie? The authors denied it later, but this was a minor reworking of a script previously submitted, and rejected, as "Alien 2." That's why the opening credits effectively undid everything in the second film. It put Ripley back into an escape pod, crashing on a prison world full of monks. The original script had the new creature coming out of Jones the Cat. The "revised" script went to an ox, and then a dog, but the design remained "catlike" in nature. If you ignore Aliens and go from the first to the third film, it almost... sorta... makes sense. As it is, though, I'll never forgive the studio for putting out that god-awful abortion of a film. 🤯

@Gimil38 You seem not to understand how "discussion" works. That sort of unsupported declaration is utterly pointless. Not saying you're wrong... or that you're right. I'm saying you haven't said anything at all, really. Not trying to be a jerk here, just giving you some hopefully beneficial advice. Provide an argument... sone reason WHY you think they're trash... and then you've contributed something. People can then agree, or disagree, based upon something apart from "cuz I sez so."

Your take at the end is actually a very good take. From what I’ve always heard and read the predator in this movie is basically an inexperienced juvenile hunter. That’s why he’s on Earth with a hunting party rather than being alone. Also why he uses all different sorts of weapons instead of just a cannon and blades, why the first one was able to take out a bunch of special forces guys and in the end not be beat, but take himself out, and this one was taken out by a cop. This hunt was more like a training hunt and right of passage kind of deal. Once Mike killed him in hand to hand combat though, they let him go and gave him the trophy. Some of the other movies have some good parts in them, but I don’t think they are as good as this one with the exception of Prey. The first movie just sets the bar so high.

It has nothing to do with a fetus being defenseless. It's a custom among hunters that you don't kill an animal that's in some phase of the reproductive process (copulation, pregnancy or nursing). Not for any chivalrous reasons, but just because a hunter wants to be able to continue hunting in the future, and he can't do that of he's killed all the stock before they're born or matured. In other words, you have to give them a chance to grow up before you kill them. (Ironic that this is NOT how a _predator_ thinks, but they clearly up the naming confusion two or three sequels later.)

"So I wonder, have they been on the planet for that long?" Not exactly. Earth is not a permanent home for them, but it is one of their favorite hunting grounds, because humanity has had no shortage of great warriors to test their mettle against. And they've been visiting Earth a LOT longer. If you delve deeper into Predator/Yautja lore through things like books, comics/graphic novels, and videogames, you'll find that they've been visiting Earth since at least the age of the Vikings, and probably even earlier.

This is one of the very few films where 5 seconds of screen time spawned an entire movie franchise. My friends and I freaked out when the camera panned to the Predators' trophy case and, hanging right above the human skulls, was the unmistakable elongated head of a xenomorph. I had to wait several years until the first _AVP_ movie came out. Your satisfaction may vary with the finished product. While most would say the original movie is better, I give the crew of _Predator 2_ kudoes for taking the setting out of the actual jungle and putting it into the urban jungle. It was a good change-up to make the heroes everyday guys rather than impossibly ripped commandos. R.I.P. to The Extreme, Bill Paxton -- the only guy to fight an Alien, a Predator and a Terminator and get killed by each of them. He fares better against tornadoes. Seriously, _Twister_ would be a great movie to react to (and Bill is the hero).

It's a seldom-understood principle about stories with a character-vs-character conflict, but in the event you're going to write such a story around one of _these,_ the _antagonist_ is the most important character. You have to start with _them._ You have to make them _terrifying,_ and seemingly unstoppable. You have to get them _completely_ fleshed out before you even _touch_ the protagonist. But then you have to build mechanisms into the story that allow the protagonist to defeat them in completely logical, believable ways that don't violate the rules of the story that you establish early on. Unfortunately, one consequence of this is that it makes good sequels tricky, just because it's _so_ much easier to adapt a _new_ protagonist to an already-existing antagonist then to go the other _way._ _Predator_ and _Predator 2_ are both stories with such a conflict. But they didn't dare to reuse Dutch, because he was adapted to fighting the predator in the _first_ one. His antagonist was _dead._ So starting over with a new antagonist meant they had to start over with a new protagonist as _well._

This was the first of the Predator or Alien movies I ever saw. When I was a kid, I don't remember how old, I turned on the TV one day and it was right at the part where Danny Glover and the Predator were having their final fight inside the ship. I was so fascinated by everything that was going on. I don't like *all* the movies in the franchise, but I don't think any of them are really that bad, so watch whichever ones you think look interesting. My main recommendation would be "Alien vs. Predator". It has a fantastic lead actress, Sanaa Lathan, who voices Catwoman in the Harley Quinn cartoon (which you should also watch, if you haven't already).

Another film featuring Bill Paxton that no one else has reacted to is Katherine Bigelow’s “Near Dark”. He was actually featured on the poster for that one. He wasn’t the main character but his image is quite striking.

Now that you have seen the first two Predator films, I cannot wait to see your reaction to Prey. I love that Alan Silvestri composed the music for both films. If you want to see a great movie with Bill Paxton, watch Twister. That is an amazing film and he was amazing in it. The actor who played Captain Pilgrim in this movie, Kent McCord, I remember as a little boy in the 1970's watching on the cop series Adam-12. So that brought back memories of my childhood. And that scene at the end, when all those other Predators show up? Well, let's just say that when I saw this in the theater, my jaw dropped. The actress in this movie, Maria Conchita Alonzo, was in the 1987 film The Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's based on a story by Stephen King and, while being different from one another, the story and the movie are awesome.

This movie is so much better than it gets credit for. It's a different kind of Predator movie. Danny Glover's Mike Harrigan is more of a every man hero. I scream in joy when you mentioned the Xenomorph skull.

Bill Paxton also cameos in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando. And he's in another Arnold movie with a bigger role called True Lies. He doesn't die in these movies. Bill Paxton is the main character in Twister. Opposite Helen Hunt. No dying there either. He also starred in the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt movie Edge of Tomorrow. One of my favorite movies. You'll love his accent! There is one other movie Bill Paxton dies in. The Terminator with ArnoldSchwarzenegger at the very beginning of the film. Paxton plays a spiked blue-haired punk. In short, Bill Paxton gets killed by an alien xenomorph, a Terminator and a Predator in Aliens, The Terminator and Predator 2. How fun is that? -OG

According to the documentary, Keyes is responsible for sending Dutch and Dylan and the team into the jungle for the first one. Also, there was going to be a line or scene where it’s mentioned Dutch died from radiation poisoning about 6 months later, Arnie was doing Terminator 2 and that’s why he didn’t return for this one.
